I think if you were holding yourself out to the public as a childcare provider (ie seeking out clientele) you would be considered a day care provider and not just a private babysitter. Also homeowners insurance wouldn't cover liability for business activities, which this would be.

@StrawberryBee: My husband and I each have a car, so one would always be here with me. Car seats are a good call! either have them provide one, or I would have them in case of emergency.

@Mamaof2: I am not planning on TTC for a few months at least, so even if we got pregnant right away the very first cycle it would be at least a year before I would need leave. Something to think about though! Thanks!

@catomd00: The parents of the kids were arrested because the kid was shaken at someone else's house?

@blackbird: I am not sure what back up care would look like, I was planning doing it alone. I don't have kids yet, and I myself don't go to the doctor often at all. I am rarely sick. Something to consider though!
My dog is very friendly and gentle. I can see why some parents would have issues with animals, but I would be upfront from the beginning and they can decide whether they are comfortable with animals.

@regberadaisy: If you don't have a "daycare", like if you are basically babysitting but full time, there wouldn't be any way for someone to sue you right? You are just watching a kid like anybody would.
@Dandelion: I should check out our homeowners insurance policy. Good idea!
@daniellemybelle: Thanks for sharing! Good to know!@yellowbird: Encouraging to know it can work! Do you have a contract? are they a "daycare"? or just someone watching your kids "under the table"?

It's illegal in our state, but people do it. We are considering using a sahm 2x a week for DD but still weighing the pros and cons. A family in our state was arrested for child endangerment/abuse/neglect after their child was injured (severe head injury from being shaken) at an unlicensed care provider.

@Pebbles: No experience but my 1st thought would be are you having someone help you? When you get pregnant and go on maternity leave what happens to the kids - would they need to find other childcare?

We considered it but never went through with it. Some of the things we thought of were: having enough carseats that in the case of an emergency, you could get somewhere with all the kids (of course, if it's a super emergency there's always an ambulance), and having cribs/PnP for everyone if the ages require it.

We send E to an in home for $50/day. She's in her 50's, though, and doesn't have kids of her own. For me, I would be worried my LO is less of a priority over the sitter's baby. Lots of people are cool with it, though, especially if there aren't 4 kids there.

Our Friday sitter has a dog and I am ok with it. She's crated sometimes, but E will also play with her and throw her a frisbee and stuff like that outside in the morning, before the other kids get there. But many parents are anti dog.

If you ever have to take your own kid to the dr or go yourself, will your husband take off? The one issue I have is that our in home ladies will need special schedule accommodations sometimes and while DH and I can often make them, I am glad they have some back up contingencies in place, otherwise it would be too hard on us

I don't, but that is the kind of babysitter I use for my dd and ds. She is wonderful!

@regberadaisy: Sometimes homeowners insurance covers that. I think our does.

I did it before I had kids of my own. I watched 2 kids (siblings) many many years ago when I became unemployed. It was fun! I had a dog and cat but their mom didn't mind.

@Pebbles: I thought about doing this when I was initially laid off. My husband and I decided it wasn't with the risk for liability issues. If a kid was to get hurt, what's to stop the parents from suing you? Everyone is real nice until someone gets hurt!

With a cat and dog I would def crate or separate them in another room while you are watching kids. That will be a deal breaker for a lot of parents.

I don't, but LO went to a neighbor's house several days this summer when our daycare was closed. She watches one child at a time in addition to her own LO. I don't think she babysits every day but she is kind of always available so she stays busy with the neighborhood families. We pay her $6/hr which I think is amazing! It is "under the table" I guess you would say but it is also not full time. She does an amazing job though. Before she SAH her son went to daycare so she kind of emulates them in terms of routine, activities, daily sheet, etc. She has taken all appropriate safety measures in the house and was very communicative about that as well. I was thrilled to have her!

Does anyone watch children in their home? Are you licensed through the state or is it more under the table for one or two children?

I have been thinking about watching children in my home. ( I have worked as a nanny several times, but always at their house). No kids of my own yet, but planning on TTC in a few months. My husband and I have a house with space for extra people during the day. My husband works full time outside of the home, so it would just be me home. We do have one cat and one dog, but they are both friendly.

What are the pros and cons of watching kids full time in your own home? anything I am missing or not thinking of?
Feel free to message me or respond here. Thanks!
