I cut DS1's hair for a good year before he went to a salon. His hair is thick and wavy (so it didn't need to be as perfect as fine straight baby hair), and he always sat still for me. When we did take him, we took him to an actual salon because I knew he would sit still.

As for DS2, he hasn't had a haircut yet, though he needs one. There is no way he's sitting still for it though, so I'm not sure what we are going to do. He has really curly hair.

My son was a year old. He sat on my lap and was the picture of perfection. That was the only time though, as he had no idea what was going on. Now it's so bad I have to cut it myself. I've gotten really good with the buzzer and a pair of thinning shears.

@raspberries: the place we went they sit in a little car chair. Also there was a big TV with Thomas playing. So he was happy steering the car and watching Thomas.

DS was about 18 months. I asked for "classic little boy". We went to a budget salon and he screamed bloody murder the entire time. The woman was very understanding and quick and I gave her a big tip!

@maddyz: Good to know that it was quick - that was my other concern!

@junebugsmama: That's kind of why I was wondering if I should take in pictures of what I want done - I think it'd be cute to let it grow longer, but it needs to be... shaped, I guess?

Do they have the baby sit on a parent's lap, or in the chair by themselves?

LO got his hair cut around 15 months. It really really needed it. I went to a place that does kids cuts. And just told the guy to clean it up. He was shaggy, but I dont think there was much option on what to do. It took all of 8-10 minutes which was what was really important. Any longer and LO would have had half a haircut...

I am trying to decide if I should cut my sons hair. It's sooooo long but at this point I kinda want it to grow out a little more and try the longish look while he's still a young toddler. I figure he's gonna have short hair for his whole life probably! Might as well let it grow now. Drives my MIL insane and my DH a little bit just about it being in his eyes.

We took T to a kids cut place at about 17 months. It went great. They trimmed up her bangs and evened everything else out.

DD was like 19-20 months when we slightly trimmed the back and bangs ourselves. She doesn't have a lot of hair but she has this one lonnng piece of bang that we constantly have to clip back. And my mom cut her back for fun hoping it will grow faster.

We took B when he was about a year, and I basically told them I wanted it to stay longish on top but to trim the sides and back. We also went to a kids place - I figure they know what they're doing in terms of dealing with a wiggly toddler.

We went around 15 months, but should have gone sooner. He looked like a highland cow. Haha.

Went into a little kids cut place, and just told the lady I wanted it short. Ha. You could tell them if you want a specific style or whatever, but I just wanted it out of his eyes!

When did your LO get their first hair cut? Did you go to a salon, or did you do it yourself? Did you go in with an idea of what you wanted?

DS is 13 months old, and he's got a baby mullet going on, so I think it's time to bite the bullet. Should I be looking up hair inspiration pictures for 1 year olds, or would it be enough to go in and ask for the stylist to just trim it up?

I skipped any kinds of salon/spa treatments in the 1st trimester, just to be cautious. Otherwise, I am a dedicated Aveda customer, so I continue to get my regular treatments done at the Aveda salon/spa.

I didn't worry about it too much. I wasn't in there for an extremely long time, or even long enough to cause harm I don't think, and plus, salons are pretty ventilated.

You have to think, the lady that does your hair or nails could get pregnant too, and she probably isn't going to quit her job because of it! I know my hair/pedicure lady didn't :)

If you are really concerned, you could wear a little mask while getting your nails done.

I also don't go, and didn't when I was preggo. The smells give me migraines, and especially when I'm pregnant I like to keep the migraines down so I can keep the amount of meds I take down.

I just gave myself manicures, and but natural nail polish online called piggy paint so I knew it would be safe to use. And I'll be able to use it on my LO when she gets older.

One of the first things my mom and sister told me when I got pregnant was that I needed to keep taking care of myself - i.e. still get regular haircuts and pedicures. I totally love and agree with this idea.

So my question is how did you make an effort to avoid the intense chemical smells that come along with the salons - like the chemicals used with hair dye and acrylic nails? Or did you even try to avoid them?

I'm thinking of maybe going to an Aveda or some other kind of natural products salon during pregnancy. Or maybe trying to go first thing in the morning when there wouldn't be any/many other appointments. But I'm just not sure. I'm almost 7 weeks, so I'm trying to be especially careful in the first tri.
