The baby was always over tired at drop off and I always had to wake her up for pick up, since she napped 3-4x a day. So that was the worst part of it for me when DD2 was a baby, not the actual drop off/pick up logistics. That part must've been easy since I barely remember it!

Our daycare is a large center-- ramps, multiple doors/gates, so I found using a stroller/car seat was more of a pain. Most parents don't use strollers and if they do, they are those super lightweight umbrella ones, not suitable for infants. I prefer to use the ergo and have one big tote bag ready to hold everything else-- lunch/bottle bag, papers, clothes, etc. My daughter is 2.5 so she just walks and holds my hand when we get out of the gate to the parking lot. I pick my son up first, stick him in the ergo, then make my way to my daughter's class.

When we get to the car, I open her door and she climbs in to her seat. I then buckle my son in his seat, and come back to buckle my daughter. My days of using the ergo are probably numbered though and soon I'll just have to walk with the both of them.

My husband does most of the drop offs. When DS was smaller/sleepier, he would take him in the bucket seat. But now he just holds his hand or carries him in. My daughter usually gets dropped off first and while DH is getting her situated, my son just stands around/explores her classroom.

You'll figure it out! :)

We don't have a car, so I never used a car seat, but I would take the stroller with the bassinet, pop off the bassinet attachment so I could take it up the stairs, and get DS that way. When the baby was no longer in the bassinet but in the stroller seat, I would pop off the seat attachment and take it up the stairs. Our new daycare doesn't have stairs, so I just wheel DD in and leave her in the stroller, but the entrance is right next to the coat room so I can see her the whole time.

I think it's no more complicated than any other thing you do with two, meaning that there is a learning curve but once you get used to it it's not too bad. The key for me in the morning was getting myself and baby ready first and then waking my toddler at the last minute and getting dressed/quick breakfast in as short a time as possible. If we drove I would get the toddler out, have him hold his backpack and then grab the baby. I found it easiest to just carry baby in and not bother with carseat/stroller/carrier. But usually we walked so it was easier. Also, we were late (a lot). :silly:

Everyone at our preschool who is dropping off an older child uses the carseat and snap & go. I have seen a few that baby wear, but they usually have two older little ones.

I open the door to let LO1 climb into his seat. Then I put LO2 in his seat and buckle him in (at the time he was already in a convertible). Go back and buckle LO2 and drive to school. Once there I let LO1 out and wear LO2. I have my hands free and can help my oldest get situated and sign him in. Baby wearing stopped once LO2 started walking, and I just carry him in. I let him walk around in the hallway and classroom while I help LO1. Other moms just carry the infant bucket seat with them or use a stroller. I'm the odd one in the bunch.

Two is easy. Three is where it gets challenging. With three, I have my baby wearing already on as I drive to school. I get the girls out of the car and then I put baby Theo into the baby wearing. There is no way I could wrangle two girls, school bags, lunch boxes and the baby seat! Then I grab the bags and girls' hands and drop them off at their classrooms.

I reverse the process in the evenings, putting the baby into his seat as soon as we get to the car while the girls work on their buckles. It's an adventure to be sure!

I guess all of that is to say that baby wearing might be easier than lugging the car seat around.

@Mrs. Jump Rope: haha I was too scared to come back to this thread for a couple of days!

Actually, all of these responses have been great because I feel like I can prepare myself - it won't always be fun but my arm will look good (ha) and we do already have the snap n go and chicco infant seat from LO1 so those will be put to good use. And we do have a garage so that's great.

I do somewhat look forward to the future when LO2 will be old enough to be excited about picking up big brother (though friends have told me that is even worse because toddlers love to move at their own pace).

Appreciate all of the advice!

I had dd2 in Novemeber and DD1 was 2 and still attending daycare. I carried the infant seat into the school when I would drop dd1 off. It wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. dd2 would stay asleep during most of it.

The hectic part was trying to do everything and leave the house in a timely fashion. Now, that was hard!

It's really not bad. My two are 17 months apart and I would wear a wrap when she was little and just put her in that going in to daycare with the older one. When the weather warmed up, I carried her in the carrier. I just switched her out of the carrier at 13m because it was so much easier than having her in a convertible!

I take my baby (born this jan) for ever drop off nd pick up and keep her in her bucket seat. I don't carry her all the way though since I'll just click her onto the stroller. Usually my toddler (2 yrs) loves pushing the stroller so that keeps him from running away. To avoid all the bundling up I have an auxiliary heater in the car and a foot muff in the carseat. So only on days when it's REALLY cold do I put a jacket on my baby (always a hat though).

Yep, had to carry the infant car seat in and out when doing drop off or pick up! It's a pain, but not as much as a pain as I originally thought it would be. And better than having to unbuckle the baby and carry him in and then strap him back into his seat after.

Yup, had to carry the infant seat everywhere. It builds up your arm muscles though. The only thing is my baby would wake up as I'm taking the seat out of the car. Sometimes she had just fallen asleep for her nap. But she was a lot more flexible with her sleep schedule than her brother is. Overall it wan't so bad, the first year goes quick.

@charlotte: I had Dd2 last September, one week before my oldest started preschool. She goes 3x a week.

I won't lie, it's kind of the biggest pain in the ass. I drop her off at 9am and pick her up at 11:30.

The first few months were hectic. Getting her up, breakfast made and ready for school and out the door by 8:45 seemed damn near impossible. The baby was still a newborn and not on a schedule, and for weeks it seemed like someone always needed something the second I was preoccupied with someone else -- and the baby especially had a knack for wanting to nurse when I was trying to rush out the door. :silly: I became a pro at nursing while helping my oldest brush her teeth!

It got better with time, though! Then winter hit and it all went to hell again. I told my husband that for next year, I really want a remote car starter. This winter was cold and icy, and I ran around so much from 7am-8:45am that I always forgot to start my car up!

I always kept her in her carrier. She's 7 months old now and the weather is now so I've started taking her out and carrying her on my hip at pick up. Drop off takes a whole 2 minutes, so I leave her in the carrier. It really is the biggest pita though: I have to find parking, haul two kids across the street, down two flights of stairs (and the carrier is so heavy!), into the class room, then go right back up two flights of steps and out to my car.

I bet I just scared you, ha ha :silly:

My little one is still just a newborn, so I can't speak about being further along in the first year, but I take her in with us in the infant seat. Until she gets too heavy to carry that way, that's the easiest for me since she's usually asleep and I don't wanna wake her up!

This September I am due with #2 and my toddler (will be 2.5 at the time) is starting a Montessori toddler program for three hours in the AM several times a week. It will be nice to have a bit of one on one baby time but I am a little scared about the drop off and pickup...especially in winter with all the bundling and coats etc (although we drive).

I have to walk him in and sign in. Parents who have BTDT --- is it as horrible as I am imagining during baby 2's first year? Do you drag the infant seat in or take baby out or use the snap n go? I'm hoping I'm just imagining the worst but it seems....complicated! Any tips!?
