@bluestriped bee: Yup, we do that! What we do at the end of the year is the kids clean out their lockers and create a huge donation pile of supplies. It's something, I guess? And because it's such a well-funded school, the kids who are lower socioeconomically get lots of attention and resources- we do bookbags home full of food every weekend and we have lot of support for them. But I never take for granted how lucky I am to be in that school- hopefully my students do too.

@mrs.shinerbock: I tried to go to that link, but Irish brought up a bunch of ads.

This is crazy! I grew up in a wealthy district, and they never asked for supplies, and we always had stuff. I'm going to ask some of my friends who now teach at our high school of they have to buy their own supplies or not! I wonder if there is a non-profit through the Combined Federal Campaign for federal workers to contribute. This year, I'm donating to DC diaper bank, and would be interested in helping teachers in my community.

@Mrs. Lion: I remember a new 8th grade science teacher didn't know about the limited number of copies when she first started. For about a month we had handouts for everything. Once she learned there was a cap on copies she was so bummed. In a way it created more work for her too.

Do any of you teachers sign up for Reddit Teachers? They always do a big match up. It's run like the reddit gifts swaps except teachers sign up and other people gift them stuff instead of everyone purchasing and receiving gifts.

ETA - I just looked and this year they have paired with donors choose.org so people can choose a teacher to support and donate money toward their needs.

Copy paper is huge in our building. Other items are high lighters, glue sticks, erasers, pencils, tissues, and paper towels. I work in a low socioeconomic status area. A lot of our students are gifted their school supplies by churches or charities. They only give the basics so those students come without the paper towels or tissues on the list.

As a teacher, I've already spent $300 on back to school this year.

@pachamama: Yeah, it does suck.

Though, as a teacher in a wealthy school district, would you ever consider asking your students to give back to less funded schools? I'm sure you (as a teacher and an employee of a school funded by taxes) can't give your supplies away but what about running a school supplies drive (like a food drive) where kids and parents donate supplies they don't need. Maybe collect unused or supplies in good condition that would otherwise be tossed by students? I just remember all the crap I used to toss at the end of each year as a student.

@bluestriped bee: I teach at a relatively wealthy suburb and we never run out of anything. Ever. If I complain that there are no paper towels there is a resolution within an hour. The injustice of resources for children in this country is unreal.
The only thing I run out of is patience!

I would do without or borrow supplies from a teacher who had overage until I could repay them when the money came in. We have a huge school supply list so it covers everything. We usually use all of the dry erase markers and scotch tape right before school ends.

@Mrs. Lion: So what did you do, if you needed to make copies after the allotment was up?

I do know a little about copy allotments. I had to buy a printer for one of my sites and the printer rep mentioned if I wanted to pay per page. I thought it was crazy to think I had to pay per page. I understand some printers need maintenance but its just crazy. Although, maybe owning a business you can justify the per print cost... instead of buying a printer out right and then having to pay for a whole new one or pay for fees to repair it.

@T.H.O.U.: I'm putting together some backpacks to donate to the elementary school next door. I was sort of guessing on the supply lists but I bought a ton of stuff from amazon basics. The quality looks good. I even bought the amazon basics backpacks and they look good! I did buy some name brand stuff (ticonderoga pencils) but anything I could buy from Basics I did.

We had an allotment of copies and there were never enough..but we couldn't just bring in paper so there was really nothing we could do about that. I taught 4th and the only thing we typically ran out of was pencils. The items we asked for at the beginning of the year fortunately lasted pretty much all the way through. Except pencils. I think 4th graders eat pencils. Those Ticonderogas erase well, but they must also be tasty :silly:

White board markers, tissues, and pencils go by Christmas and I have to repurchase on my own. I teach 6-12 and asking parents isn't really an option. Our school has very limited amounts of printer paper so the last few weeks of school I had to buy my own and bring it with me to the copier.

I haven't added it all up and we don't have everything yet, but we have to buy all pens, pencils, markers, rulers, glue, backpack and pencil case, all pretty basic stuff and I think that will be between €30-40. The school buys all the paper goods so that all the kids have the same thing and then they bill us. The cost for that is supposed to be €50 or less for the whole year. I think it's reasonable. Our kids don't pool supplies as we are supposed to put their name on every item and one of the goals is that the kids are responsible for and keep track of their own stuff.

1 Box Scotties Facial Tissue, 'Scotties', Hypo- Allergenic, 200 Ct.
1-Bx Storage Bags, Economy Zip, Gallon, 15 Ct.

I ordered the "kit" from the school supply company the school uses at the end of last year. The cost was $29.50. Seems reasonable to me, since I have been through the hassle of going place to place to find the right item!

@T.H.O.U.: They're the elmers extra large ones...I was surprised how pricy they were, I could have bought 30 of the regular sized ones for $10 via amazon....
