I also live in Irvine and love it! It's not for everyone, but so family friendly and clean! I'd also second Los Alamitos/Rossmoor, Villa Park, and Tustin. Brea and Anaheim Hills is nice too, though it might be killer in traffic?

@lisamarieloves: I graduated from Villa Park High, class of 2000 :)
@Ginabean3: Neighborhoods are really going to depend on your budget. I grew up in Orange and it was really nice. Villa Park and Orange Park Acres are great if you can afford them and have awesome schools, same with Anaheim Hills. Costa Mesa has some really nice areas. South Orange County is really nice (Mission Viejo, Aliso Viejo) but the morning commute could be bad into Santa Ana if you end up having to take the 405 or 5 freeways. A little more affordable but still nice would be Tustin, Fullerton, and Placentia.

We live in Irvine and absolutely love it. It's clean, very safe, beautiful parks, etc. I do agree that there are a lot of Asians (I'm one of them!), but there are a lot of other nationalities as well. We chose this area mainly for the safety and also for the great public schools.

Congrats on the exciting news! I grew up and currently live(and teach) in North OC. The Seal Beach/Los Alamitos area is fantastic--.the school district (Los Alamitos Unified) is EXCELLENT, and the community is very family-oriented! Also, don't rule out the south Long Beach area, some great neighborhoods and good, diverse schools there. Good neighborhoods in the area there are Los Altos and the Plaza--they surround a huge park, El Dorado Park. Let me know if you want more info! Good luck!

a lot of schools in that area tend to be almost all asian. i really prefer a more diverse student body and that would be a factor in where to move if it were me. lots of great schools to consider though and it's a great area -- not too far from la and there's lots to do in oc!

@Ginabean3: i live in the OC - it's such a great place to live! you should check out greatschools.org... just type in the city in the search bar and it'll pull up all schools in that city and its rating.

irvine, tustin, orange, lake forest all have schools with good rankings, but within each district there's of course some schools that are better than others!

Hi Bees! So exciting news....it's 3 weeks before I have to go back to work from maternity leave and DH got his dream job that basically will allow me to be the Chief Domestic Officer (SAHM!!!) of our little family. Whoo hooo!

But as a result we need to move (which I'm totally ok with and excited about). His new office will be in Santa Ana, CA so we are looking to move to that vicinity. (+\- 25-30 miles)

Any advice on good cities/school districts in that area? I've heard Irvine is nice/good schools....what else? Any input would be greatly appreciated? Any areas to avoid?

Thanks!

We have rough plans for the next 2/5/10 years.

2 years - pay off remaining student loan debt (about 40k)

in between: buy land and build forever home. This can happen at any time, we have the $ and blueprints, just waiting on the right parcel of land in the right neighborhood to pop up for sale! Want to be into our forever home before LO is in kindergarten.

5 years - buy investment property (apartment building or lakeside rental cabin...haven't decided which yet, but probably apartment building). Take cruise on Viking River Cruises down the Nile River in Egypt (this will be our 5th anniversary trip/DH 50th birthday trip, w/o LO who will go to "camp grandparents" for a week). Go back to Tuscany. Husband will go up to full professor from associate, which will greatly increase his income.

10 years - buy a few more pieces of investment property (these would all be apartment buildings). I would love to be able to transition to part time work at this point and do more volunteer work. Take lots of trips with LO!

We kind of have 2 and 5ish year plans, but no 10 year yet. I figure the really far out planning depends on whether we can have kids and if we end up going through with having 2.

2 years - have a baby, DH and I start working from home part time

5 years - have a second baby, sell our house and buy one in a better school district when baby #1 is kindergarten age. I will also start job searching after baby #2.

5 years - get into commerical property, maybe own another personal business, move into our forever home, and have baby #2/#3

It's interesting to look at life goals that way. I'm generally a take-things-as-they-come kind of gal, but I can see these things happening within 2/5/10 years.

2 years: get my first book published, build up my freelance career, and get acquainted with the new baby.

5 years: have another baby or two, do more publishing/freelance stuff.

10 years: finish having babies, double-triple our income, have investments & a large savings, increase value of our home by 70k.

Oh wow! We definitely don't really have 2/5/10 year plans! I mean, we're in a good place right now where we don't really see much changing. We have our forever home, we're married, and we're currently pregnant with kid #1. Our next real plan is to have kid #2 and then take it from there.
