@PawPrints: my son was born 6 days before thanksgiving, 4 days later my husband was incredibly ill and quarantined in a hotel, we had to fly my dad down unexpectedly to help, then 4 day weekend/thanksgiving. Oh, and Thanksgiving Day was my older one’s 3rd birthday!! About as abnormal as it gets. Our 3 year old totally just rolled with the punches!

I'm following along here! My LO is 2.5 and I'm due on dec 23rd. Best of luck to you! It's a stressful time having baby arrive at any part of the year but everything seems multiplied around the holidays. We don't live close to any family whatsoever (7+ hour drive) so whomever comes to visit will likely stay for multiple days. My parents will likely come up either when I'm in labor, or just before Christmas to watch and wait for baby. And entertain my toddler. Who knows about my inlaws. I reach my point with them after about 48 hours.
@Foodnerd81: you make a good point; I've been thinking about family of four time a lot.

I had my second a week before Christmas, got home from hospital on a Monday and MIl arrived on Tuesday. In some ways it was really great because the older one got so much extra attention and activity. People were mindful to really pay attention to her and not just fawn over the new baby. They took her out to do fun things every day.

However- my warning is to watch out that you don’t miss out on the nice bonding as a family of four. Everyone was so focused on helping by taking the toddler out that it ended up being me home alone with the new baby all morning and then everyone crowded around all afternoon, with no quiet new family foursome time. In my postpartum haze I really resented missing out on that. She turns two in a week and I’m still kind of sad about it.

One the baby is here, it will probably go back and forth between IM A BABY and IM A BIG GIRL. Our son was a little manic like that too. But we kept stressing how we had to do things a certain way or he had to be careful 'BECAUSE BABY IS VVVEEEERRRRY SMALLLL.' We kept reiterating how small baby was and how big DS1 was and obviously it was a size difference he could relate to, so he would start going along with it better. Eventually, he would start saying things like "baby can't do this because he's TOO SMALL, right mommy?"

Get your visitors to pay attention to your older child if possible! Grandma time with our older one helped a lot when we had #2. And remember it's temporary and normal. My two year old has suddenly decided to resist naps for the first time since I don't remember when. And now he can get out of the crib. So that's fun.

The only thing I'm worried about with the holiday is that my kids will be so bummed if we miss Xmas bc we are in the hospital. 😬

@gingerbebe: Thanks! I think I'm worrying about it since DD has spent the last two days in a brand-new major boundary-pushing time which came out of nowhere and is totally out of her normal character. Last night coming home from daycare she wanted to be buckled into the infant seat (which we've already installed) instead of her own, yelled I'M A BABY NOT A BIG GIRL a lot, then spent the entire drive home yelling I DON'T LIKE MY CAR SEAT. So, just picturing this ramping up - we've been very spoiled to have a pretty sweet cooperative 2-year-old so feeling a little unprepared.

I really don't think you have to worry about it. Like, even if the baby was coming at a point in time where there wasn't a holiday, you'd still probably have family and visitors and different caretakers while you're giving birth, etc. And if this was a holiday WITHOUT a baby, there would still be family and school closures and what not. Like, I don't think it being Christmas will really be a big deal.

I would just try to keep her sleep/naps as consistent as possible so she gets enough rest and time to decompress from the stimulation, and that at least one parent is always close by to offer a lot of reassuring love and touch.

We are always traveling for the holidays in different time zones with new people and surroundings and as long as we stay nearby and keep the nap/bedtime routine solid, our kids are always good to go. When DS2 was born (DS1 was 20 months), same thing - grandparents and family members were in an out for weeks and things were all off, but we just kept his nap and bedtime routine consistent so he could rest.

Congratulations and enjoy the holidays with your sweet family!

Our second baby is due the day after Christmas. DD is 2.5. Everything I read about how to prepare a toddler for a sibling says to keep their routine as consistent as possible. Well, having the baby at Christmas makes that pretty difficult. Daycare will be closed 12/25, 12/26, and 1/1/18, and MIL/FIL will be staying with us to help care for her and also to spend Christmas, and SIL+fiancee will also be with us for a good chunk of that, and there's the general chaos of all the presents and festivities and candy. So as far from regular routine as you can get, basically.

Ideas on how to smooth this out at all? She's incredibly excited for baby brother to arrive, but I know we're going to get some boundary testing and regressing and all that.

@pastemoo: for used bottles you're supposed to buy new nipples IIRC... so maybe add that?

Must Buys:

diaper bag (JJB Be Prepared because, over packer. I have it on layaway. I sold all of my other bags from my 2 year old)

another convertible carseat (probably getting another maxi cosi pria but not sure!)

cosleeper (2nd hand PB one from a friend. we didn't get one with my daughter and I regretted it)

fresh white onesies/baby t-shirts (it'll be June so baby will probably be scantily clad, onesies are an easy pick and the old whites from #1 are a bit stained here and there)

On My Wish List
newborn and OS diaper covers (we use sposies but I like the rumparooz covers to go over them)

a new seat cover for the mommaroo (we got it 2nd hand from a friend- it's old and a bit faded)

A&A swaddles (another thing we never used with #1, I'd like to try them this time!)

Squish Wraps/Carriers (I have a few already all in good shape... but the more the merrier! I have been fighting the urge to stash for the new baby... but I have one on the way from a preorder... who knows if I'll add more!)

Our son will be 28 months when baby brother arrives. We have bought or plan to buy:
-RNP
-Double video monitor (ours was breaking)
-Crib sheets
-Changing pad cover
-Muslin blankets (never had them before and really wanted them)
-Double stroller
-Humidifier
-Extra carseat base
-New diaper bag (Christmas gift)
-Random organization things for our son's new room, the baby's room, and the diaper bag
-diapers
-wipes
-formula

A lot of stuff we got or are getting is simply because we wanted it and it was all I asked for for Christmas. I really want this baby to be celebrated and have his own things just like big brother did.

LO2 is coming when DS will be 20 months old so we still have a lot of baby gear to reuse, but unfortunately we will probably need another crib. Someone gave us a beautiful bassinet so I will probably use that to start and then use the PNP + mattress we already have for a while and see if we can get away with that for a while, since LO2 will be our last. I'm sorta hoping our son will stay in his crib for a long time so I'm not super against buying another crib but we'll try to do without one for a while.

We will reuse his infant seat but will need another convertible eventually. We have a bouncer and RNP, but may pick up a used swing if our second looks like a swing person. We have a Boba wrap and Ergo360 ready of this baby tolerates being worn unlike big bro. Might get the rumble board for our UB Cruz but we are also thinking about the UB G-link as a double if baby isn't into being worn.

If it's a boy we have plenty of clothes. They will be born 3.5 months apart on the calendar so much of the clothing will be useable. If it's a girl we will have an avalanche of clothes sent to us because it will be the first girl grandkid and both grandmas are shoppers and love frilly things.

We will need new hooded towels (we love the PBK beach wraps for DS), diapers and wipes, an assortment of pacis to try out (DS didn't take any), and some new nipples and pump tubing/storage bottles. Lansinoh disposable nursing pads, new nursing tanks and pj bottoms for me to live in. Another humidifier and Marpac Dohm. Another set of blackout curtains.

Mostly the biggest work is going to be rearranging the entire house. We are planning to turn DH's office into a playroom, furnish our living room (currently the play space), move DH's office stuff into our master, and then turning the guest room into the new baby's room. I'm exhausted thinking about it.

I don't think I'll be needing much at all - just new bottles/nipples/pacifiers, breast pump (planning on getting it through insurance), milk bags, diapers and wipes, diaper cream... Mostly small stuff.

Bigger stuff - we will prob get a new infant car seat. Maybe a new carrier, I'm kinda tired of my ergo. We sold our swing and jumperoo so will have to get new ones.

Oh and clothes if this baby is a boy and doesn't wanna wear big sister's pink hand me downs ;)

It's nice knowing that we don't have any big nursery purchases.

this is a helpful thread for me.

#1 is a boy and he will be 22 mo when #2 girl is here.

I need:

-disposable diapers and wipes (we mostly cloth but still need disposables some times)

-a couple more cloth diaper covers

-glider (didn't have one for #1 and regretted it)

-baby monitor (never had one for #1 but since they will eventually share a room I want one for sure)

-double stroller (we walk a lot)

-clothes (i could reuse boy clothes for girl but getting some hand-me-down girl clothes- so thankful)

-muslin blankets (#1 still is still attached to his)

-breastmilk storage bags just in case (never needed with #1)

-disposable nursing pads just in case (i used cloth diapers at first when very leaky then used reusable cloth nursing pads)

Extras I want: nursing necklaces, cute bibs, headbands/girly accessories, rock n play (friend is letting me borrow), ergo infant insert,

The only things we need are new diaper covers (the elastics in ours are shot) and warmer clothes, because our second baby will be tiny in the winter.
I'm also planning to get:
A glider (didn't have space in our old apartment, and I wanted one!)
A ring sling (we used the boba, tried the k'tan but didn't like it)
New bottles
New humidifier
Sheepskin
New crib sheets

The baby won't be in its own room until it sleeps through the night, or around a year hopefully. We will worry about decorating and stuff at that point

We didn't get much. A rock n play because we never had one and the new baby let us put him down (LO 1 never did). A few pacifiers. A few disposables for the beginning (then we switched to cloth). We used this same method to attached the crib to our bed for the beginning and it worked great!

Outside of new clothes if this baby winds up being a girl, we have everything we NEED but these things would be nice:

Jogging stroller - I hated the stroller we had with DS and refuse to use it again. But can just as easily do without.
Toddler Tula - for tandem wearing
Wrap Conversion Ring Sling - I have a Maya but would LOVE a pretty WCRS.
Rockaroo - our swing is so big for our little house that a smaller footprint would be nice
Diono Rainier - we have 2 convertible seats already but I really value the steel frame in this one
Breast pump - hated mine and would like to try a different brand
New bedding - they will share a room so I'd like to better match what we have going on in the toddler bed
