I bought a couple of cheapies before she was born just to make sure I had SOMETHING to hold the girls up prior to her being born (I'm super busty and need a bra). Nursing tanks don't support me much. After she was born I went to a LC like @mediagirl and she had a decent selection of bras. I also went to a proper bra store and got my FAVE nursing bra fitted. I still wear it even though DD is weaned because it's such great support.

1 & 2 - you don't. Buy them after you have the baby. You really don't know what size you will be until after the baby is born and your milk comes in. I would buy a couple of nursing tanks and wear those for a couple of weeks. You won't want to wear a bra those first few weeks anyways. I don't think I wore a real nursing bra for 2 months. I wore tanks and the soft, stretchy night bras from Target.

3. I saw a lactation consultant who fitted me for a nursing bra. It was perfect, I had my consult, a fitting and bought bras in one fell swoop. :)

@marionberry: I would say get fitted at a high end/speciality store, rather than a victoria's secret or motherhood maternity type store...maybe nordstrom's? Then once you have your correct size, you can purchase wherever you find the best deal! amazon sells some nursing bras for good prices.

Be somewhat careful with the fitting at Motherhood... The first time I went in a woman measured me as 36DD when I had previously been 34 or 36A. This was around 16 weeks and there is no way I had gone up that many cup sizes or i would not have still been wearing my regular bras! I also got measured at Victoria's Secret that day (36B). More recently a different Motherhod staff member measured me as 34C, so now I don't know if I'm closer to 36B or 34C, but at least those measurements are similar.

Another vote for wait! Go with tanks until a month or two PP. if you have amazon prime or mom nursing bras h e free returns so that's how I shopped for mine. My target bras are junk and stretched out after a few washes, the bravado bliss is well worth the money. I liked bravados silk bras too, they have a bravado basics cami at target that's cheaper and works well.

@Cain13: I was thinking about motherhood maternity so I'm glad you recommend there. I would really like to be fitted. So far I've gone from a 32b to a 36c-d so once my supply comes in I know I'll be even bigger. Hopefully I'll still be able to wear nursing tanks though. That had to be a major bummer!

I bought one from Target a few weeks before LO was born, but as soon as my milk came in I knew it was not going to work. The best thing I ever did was go to Motherhood Maternity. They measured me and got me what I needed. Their prices were extremely reasonable and were actually running a sale when I went in. I ended up getting 2 with underwires, and 2 for sleep. I love them all and they have held up great. They still fit 7 months out. Nursing tanks didn't work for me because my boobs have gotten huge! I went from a C cups size pre-preggo to an F cup size! Yikes!

Thanks everyone! I had thought about waiting until after the baby came, but wasn't sure when I read about so many women buying them earlier. I'll just stock up on the nursing tanks for now and skip worrying about it.

One last question: What stores do you recommend to purchase nursing bras from?

I bought mine at about 7m pregnant. The cup worked great but the band was tight sometimes (when my breast were full) so I bought a bra adjuster.
It's like an extra extender for the band of the bra & looks like this:

I would not get nursing bras until your milk supply is regulated...about 6-8 wks post partum. Your boobs may change a lot.. Before that I would just wear nursing tanks...they're easy and comfy. When you do go get nursing bras I would try to get professionally fitted at a specialty store. As for brands, I like Elle macpherson. A lot of people like bravado.

I'd wait until after your baby is born to actually get fitted for one. But if you absolutely want one before, bravado makes good ones that can accommodate several different cup sizes and although they are not the most flattering, they're not bad either. I have 2 of their seamless silk ones and they are so comfy and don't look too bad under work clothes. The band size is pretty accommodating too. i shrank down to my normal band size pretty quickly postpartum. But I was in nursing tanks for the first month at least, they are so much easier than nursing bras.

I'm only 1 week PP; and my milk came in 3 days after I got home, but production is still increasing so not sure how helpful this will be... But I bought a nursing bra in the same size as what I was during pregnancy. I wish I had gone up 1 band size, but the cup seems to be doing okay for me. I had small boobs pre-pregnancy and they only grew 1 cup size and 1 band size while pregnant.

Three questions:

1. How do you pick a good nursing bra before you have the baby? What guidelines do you use to ensure a good fit postpartum? I've heard to make sure they can stretch a bit in the cup but what about the size around? How much bigger should I get it?

2. At what point in your pregnancy are you "big enough" to start trying on nursing bras and selecting a size?

3. Any good brands you recommend?

I've had a rough time so far at 32 weeks finding bras that I feel are comfortable and will fit once my milk comes in, but so far I've only tried to do this at Target. Help me please!
