@Charm54: Yes, it is worse with me too!! We finally managed to stop the freaking out if I left the room. I am so happy to here it was a short lived stage. I told DH this morning I felt like these kind of hiccups last about a month.

@travellingbee: Thanks!

Man, that sounds tough. I'm sorry y'all are going through it. Hopefully it is a short lived phase.

We just experienced this at 3.5 (crying at daycare drop off for the first time in years, prolonged bedtime dramatics, refusing to go into dance class, etc). It seemed to be worse with me so I had Dh do bedtime, grandma bring her to dance class, etc. I tried to give her lots of extra 1 on 1 time throughout the week.

Luckily it was short lived and now 3-4 weeks later everything is back to normal!

@2littlepumpkins: Its good to know its a stage (hopefully!). He's usually taken DHs work absences in stride, but lately he is struggling wirh either of us being gone. We worked hard today on lots of one on one time and reassurance that we always come back, so fingers crossed for a full nights sleep.

I don't know if it's normal but with different stages and depending on other things going on I would say separation anxiety kind of comes and goes around here. We don't have issues to that extent but we do go through phases of clinginess at 4.5.

My 3.5 year old in the past 2 weeks has suddenly developed serious separation anxiety. I cannot even go to the bathroom alone or leave his sight without him dissolving into tears. Nighttime has become a struggle as it takes a long time for me to get him down and leave the room (he says he needs to come with me) and then he wakes up in the middle of the night and screams until he comes to sleep with me.

He has never been super independent, but has always happily played on his own before, and we have had just the normal sleep struggles.

Is this a normal developmental thing 3 year olds develop? Any advice on how you helped your kid with this stage?
