I think Tatum goes best with P!per because of the repeated consonant sounds. It gives the names a rhythm.

Thank you ladies!!

@lindseykaye: I hadn't even thought of the Ivy/Holly thing! Holly is an older dog, but I agree that is a bit much. Lyric (and Riley) is only 5 so I expect she'll be around for another 7-10 years (our last corgi lived to 16).

Beautiful names!

I am partial to Alice (my DD) and I love Bonnie, Cora, and Hadley from your list too. Personally I'd shy away from Cadence if you have a dog named Lyric (too similar with the musical reference) as well as Ivy (with a dog named Holly) but dogs don't live forever (sad) so take that as you wish.

I recently started a podcast with my sister and brother (which has been SO much fun), and I thought I'd pop in here and share it with you guys. It's called BME: The Struggle Is Real. You can find it on iTunes, Spotify, or wherever you listen to podcasts.

We cover a range of topics but Episode 105 is about parenting and tomorrow's episode is all about kids and technology.
Check it out if you feel so inclined!
Thanks,

No! My first was sick a ton for the first two years. I noticed this year in preschool she has been much better. Of course, we are super strict about hand washing and taking supplements during flu season, but we didn't get the flu!

And my 2nd has gotten sick a couple times, but nothing "bad" and not nearly as often! She started daycare at 6 months and is now 16 months.

I think it really just depends on the kids. My first spent his first two years sick. I can't even begin to count how many days he was home with every illness imaginable. My second was never sick. She got HFM on her first birthday and it was the first time I ever had to stay home with her. But I have a good friend with the opposite situation - her first was never sick and her second caught every day care bug possible.

I can't answer about younger children yet, but my son started part time daycare two mornings per week at 20mo, and he switched to five mornings per week at 26mo. We were really lucky and never really had too many illness issues other than the fact that he sort of had a chronic runny nose for the first 6-12 months. He was only home from school for a very limited amount of time.

I really hope we are that lucky with the girls, though I am not sure yet if/when we will put them in a dropoff program before age three when our public program starts.

@Iced Tea: unfortunately yes, my 2nd kiddo got slammed with the million daycare illnesses this year. I had hoped she would have an easier time because she was older (2 years) and had already had illnesses from big sister, but still..... just since September, we've had HFM that required a week off work, literally at least 10 cycles of colds that included the gross wet cough and night wake ups, 1 case of strep, 1 bout of Flu type A, 1 ear infection and most recently a UTI which is not a daycare thing but just another ducky even that requires me to leave work early.
Sooo....

Did your younger child get sick all the time when they started daycare, even if they already caught a lot from their older sibling's first year of child care?

We all suffered a constant stream of illness this year, my 3-year old's first year in preschool. I felt so bad for the baby.

Well now I'm looking at putting the baby into daycare. Is it going to be way, way better since she caught so much this year? Or should I keep my expectations low? If I pay for full-time daycare and hardly get to use it, I just might die.

I agree with ElbieKay, I think the easiest thing to do would be to assign chores/days, that way it doesn't matter who made the mess, one of them is responsible for cleaning it regardless. Alternate days, or alternate chores - (one does the dishes/counters, one sweeps the floors).

My stepdaughter's chores for the last 6 years (she's 14) have been putting the dishes away and sweeping the floor when she gets home from school. She also helps wash dishes/clean up after supper.

Assign them days when they are individually responsible for the state of the kitchen before they leave for school. Whoever's responsible for that day gets a carrot/stick. Rotate days. They can either hold each other accountable or take turns doing the dishes.

Could you get them each their own identifiable plate/cutlery (maybe from the dollar store) and tell them they have to use that? Although I don't really know how you'd enforce that if you weren't around - you'd have to take away all the regular plates.

Or maybe make the consequences more drastic so there's more incentive to not suffer the repercussions.

I would assign specific tasks. It doesn't have to be the same tasks each time, but in the moment I would say you're in charge of putting the bread and PB and jelly back, you are in charge of putting the plate and knife in the sink. Each person can make their own sandwich and each person clears their own plate after eating. It would be very kind if you helped each other out with these tasks (for example, maybe one of you could offer to take the other's plate too), but at the very least you must complete your own tasks.

Something like that.

Please help!

My kids are a bit older, but this problem applies to younger kids too I imagine, and I haven't been able to find any advice in parenting books/online.

My oldest is good about cleaning up after himself in the morning (breakfast, lunch-making), but the younger two (10 and 8) always leave a huge mess for me to clean up. I know they're capable of washing their own dishes and putting away the lunch making supplies, because they do it if I'm standing over them. But now that I have a new baby and am usually nursing in the morning it's harder to be there at the exact moment, plus I hate nagging.

I have tried setting a consequence for leaving a mess, but the problem is, they both blame each other. They both regularly make messes so it really could be either of them, or sometimes both. They've realized that if they blame each other, poor Mom gets stuck cleaning up the mess.

I've tried giving consequences to both of them if neither owns up, but that just encourages them not to do it in the first place. Each kid assumes the other won't clean up, and doesn't want to clean up AND get consequences, so neither of them bother. And my goal is to get them to actually wash their darn peanut-buttery knives and plates, not to punish them, so that doesn't feel good to me.

What do you all do when you can't figure out which sibling to hold accountable for something?

@pastemoo: I started very early teaching my second to fall asleep on his own and lucked out on that front. He woke once a night til close to 1.5, with a month or two of sttn thrown in. We never trained for that. But as far as falling asleep f your baby is still falling asleep unassisted I might just move bedtime back (if that's possible.) I noticed when I put mine to bed too early it'll take them longer than it would have taken even if I put them down later for them to fall asleep.

@gotkimchi: I can absolutely do that. Bedtime is more difficult so far, but I will let him know for tonight that is an option and see where that goes. Thank you!

@bees_knees: Cool. Thank you!

@Mrs. Toad: As of now, I'm only trying to get the 1 year old to sleep through till 2am. :D

Ours share a room. We sleep train for falling asleep, but never for overnight. (Mine give up overnight on their own very early.)

The first time we did it, DS was staying at a hotel with his grandmother. The second time, I just let him stay up a little longer than I otherwise would. DD didn't cry that long and DS has never seemed upset that she was crying. DS was 28 months and 30 months when we did CIO.

DS never woke to DD crying and they have room shared from the beginning. Occasionally, she cries in the middle of the night now, and he never wakes.

@gotkimchi: I second this!

Our boys don't share a room, but their rooms share a wall and when we sleep trained the baby I'm not even sure DS1 (almost 3) even woke up. If we woke up, he didn't stay awake long. We made sure to explain to him that DS2 was learning to sleep and he would probably cry, but that I was right outside his door to make sure he was ok. And that if he (DS1) woke up he could come into our room. (He never did)
