i think that unless it was a VERY close cousin with the same last name, i would still use the name. or if it were one of my best friends who i know we would see all the time. but currently, none of us are pregnant, so we'll see who is first!

in DH family, there are a lot of family names among the cousins. one of the cousins just named their baby my (nick)name because they love it. she has a different last name though and even if it were the same, i don't think it would have been an issue since we're 28 years apart and only see each other on the holidays. i was flattered when they said they were naming her "after me"

Unless it is the same name I would still use it. I grew up "girl Jessie" on my mom's side because of a 'boy Jesse" (step cousin met at age 6) never really bothered me. I also have several cousin simlar in name and all pretty unique:

Shea
Shayla
Shyla

The oldest loves it, the next two are too young to realize it yet, but I don't think it will be a problem!

I think it's just confusing when the kids are together so I wouldn't do a similar name to a child we would see often. Hubs and I have both always loved the name Lily, but one of his cousins recently named their child Lila and that's too close for us. Also, the babies would have the same last name. Right now we only see them about twice a year but once we move home to Boston we'll see them all the time and Lily and Lila would just get confusing.

I dont think its a big deal either. I know DH best friend who he does not see that often had a boy a year ago and named him the boy name DH and I both LOVE and want to use. DH told the parents that we LOVE there new babies name and that its actually the boy name WE love and thought about using. (its not a super common name, they are the only ones who we know who have used it) NOT that we would use it now, or if it were to upset them. Just made that simple comment. They were flattered by it and said it was a good name and if we still wanted to use it IF and when he had a boy that we totally should. I think if it was closer in the family like a cousin or something then it would be different.

I think if it just sounds the same, that's fine. But if it's the exact same name then depending on how close the relationship is between the two kids, you might want to consider a different name. LIke if my sister chooses my #1 girl name for her baby due in May, I just won't use it if I also have a girl.

It doesn't matter how close the name is. It wouldn't really stop me. Unless they are like first cousins with the exact same name. That might be confusing. But otherwise, it wouldn't effect what we name our kid.

My husband and I talked about this as we already have the boy and girl names we'd want to use (even though we are still TTC). We decided short of it being a close family member (my sisters are done and he is an only child) we'd still use the names we love.

I think if someone in my immediate family had the name or named on of their kids that then I wouldn't use it. Otherwise I wouldn't care because I know there will be others who share the same name or have a similar sounding name.

@cyneswith: That's hilarious. My paternal grandfather's name was Stephen Steven. Apparently his mom and dad were fighting about how which spelling to use and when it came time to fill in the birth certificate, great-gramps was drunk and thought "Fine! We'll do both."

My mom named my sister the same name as my cousin. And it's a very unusual name. There's never been an issue though. I think you should pick a name you love and don't let anyone else stop you.

It wouldn't bother me unless it was the same name or a very similar name in the case of close family. One of my all time favorite boy names is Noah, but DH's little cousin has that name and our last names are the same. But, we just found another name that we like better if we ever have a boy!

My SIL named her daughter something that was extremely similar to my LO's. They're only 4 months apart and see each other at least once a month. My husband and I were flabbergasted but didn't say anything cause it's their choice but from the start, it caused confusion cause everyone kept calling them the wrong names.

When SIL's LO was 6 months old, she jokingly apologized for the naming confusion, which helps a little but still, I don't know what they were thinking.....

I think it is fine if you don't see them often and the kids won't be growing up side by side. I picked the same name as my friends (unintentionally) and our daughters are 2 months apart but we rarely get together in person so it has been fine. The girls have different nicknames that they go by anyway.

Good question! I think it depends on how frequently you see the person with the name in question. We like the name Luke if we have a boy and my husband has a cousin with a boy named Luke. My husband has seen this cousin once in 9 years so I don't think it's that big of a deal. It might create some confusion with grandparents and aunts and uncles but everybody on his side of the family has the same name anyway. My husband also has a friend at work with a son named Luke but he's 3 now and we rarely see the little boy so I don't think of that as a big deal either.

with seemingly everyone around me having babies it got me thinking about what we would do if someone we knew used something close to one of "our" names for our future kids. for example, say we liked the name chloe (not our name but for examples sake). would we still pick that name if someone at work named their baby zoe? or what if we liked the name aiden and DH cousin named their son hayden? for me i think family is where i would draw the line and pick another name. that would get way too confusing at family get togethers!

so what about you? did anyone around you pick a name for their child similar to yours? how far removed does a similar name have to be for you to still use it?
