@Tanjowen: I bought E a regular little cup to use. Not always the cleanest, but he got good at it quick. Later on, he used a NUK sippy, because they are fairly easy to drink out of. I think E's problem was going from fast-flow nipples (not mine, heh) to a "no-spill" sippy that you had to suck in your cheeks to get a drop of water. Once he got stronger and bigger, he now uses our entire graveyard of previously failed sippy cups with ease.

My Lo didn't get into drinking fro sippy/straw cups until she was 1 year old. And now she can do it, but she doesn't love it. 9 months is awfully young--don't stress yet =)

LO would only drink from open cups no matter how many different types of sippy/straw cups I tried. My mom picked up these Tupperware sippy cups. She said they were the only cups we kids would drink out. Turns out they are the only sippy cups LO will drink out of too.

If you can only choose one thing, remember that the end game is to drink out of an open cup, with a straw at most. If you can, skip the sippy, they do nothing for oral motor development.

My personal preference is this training cup by Avent:

@MamaBehr: Yeah, this stage is fuuuuuun :P I keep telling myself that as he nears a year old that he'll hopefully start figuring stuff out.

@tororojo: I haven't tried the take and toss straw cups, but that might be my next try! The problem I keep running into is he wants to just chew on the straw for a minute and refuses to suck on it. It's like he can't figure out it out now that he has so many teeth, ha

.@wonderstruck: @Mrs Green Grass: I told my husband the other day that I feel like he's going to have to be a "cold turkey" kind of kid. He just loves his bottle too much.

@Mama Bird: That is a super cute idea!!

@birdofafeather: I haven't tried Zoli yet...it isn't slow flow? I'm willing to try it if it's easier for him to drink out of.

Thank you everyone for the input!

We didn't bother with sippys because she never figured them out and then I gave her a zoli on a whim which is not slow flow and she went for it. So I'm all about straw cups that aren't slow flow.

My son despised sippy cups for some reason early on. He would hardly drink anything rather than take one, but he liked open cups from the start. I got him a little doll-set cup that was small enough for him to handle till he was old enough for a regular cup. My MIL got him a cute cup with a big straw when he was around 15 months (no clue what brand, it was from a dollar store). He couldn't really work out what the straw is for at first, but once he got into a copycat phase he worked it out pretty fast :) So we just use the straw cup if we're on the go, and don't bother with sippy cups at home.

It took a really long time for us. The take and toss worked well for sippy because it wasn't too hard to suck on. We transitioned to sippy at 12 months. But it took even longer for a straw for is. I just kept trying and eventually he got it. It didn't really matter which type.

My son was like this. At 12 months I finally just put away all of the bottles and started offering sippy cups only. It took a few days of tantrums, cup throwing, and not drinking very much, but by day 4 or 5 he was using sippy cups no problem. We've had the best luck with the Munchkin brand - he likes them and we don't get any leaks.

I have the best luck w/take and toss cups (straw or sippy) because they aren't spill proof so there's no issue with slow flow. But DD goes through phases where she just wants to pull the straw out, which can suck. We also have an OXO one that you tilt back like a regular cup, but the holes are so big that she can spill it all easily (on purpose, of course!). It might be worth a try! I have a leak-proof one like that that's really hard to drink out of...Sassy brand, don't recommend it.

I'm always amazed at how much I forget. So, my older son was a huge pain in the butt about sippy cups, straw cups, and everything in between. I bought every kind under the sun. At some point he was ok with some kind, and it is all water under the bridge. My youngest son, also 9 months old, has been doing ok with sippy cups without the piece that makes it so you have to suck really hard (i don't know what it is called, but it is that extra piece that goes in the top that I assume is to stop spills). I don't know what I'll do, but I feel ya!

but willingly drank out of an open cup, what happened in your situation?

My 9 month old smacks or tosses any sippy cup or straw cup I give him, and I have a nice collection of different types. However, he will gladly drink anything out of a cup with the lid off. If your baby was similar:

- did they ever use a straw/sippy cup?
- If they did, at what age did they learn to use either a straw/sippy cup
- Is there a particular brand of cup that worked best? I feel that the straw cups are slow flow straws and frustrate him
