@irene: Goodness, yes! We have struggled so much with her sleep. She has to have things completely silent, she won't sleep anywhere but in her crib or in the car, which means we can't stay out past her nap time - ever! She gets overtired very quickly so if we miss her cue, it's such a struggle to get her to sleep. Until about a month ago, she was still waking 2-3 times per night. She still won't take more than a power nap at daycare, so she's exhausted by the time she gets home. It's been rough... Nothing we've read/tried works to change it.

@brownie: We just got back from our GI appointment... and we met a mother that has the exact same issue as you - their son eats A LOT of food, but just won't gain weight. But he looks so healthy though. I am sure that's your case as well....!

@BabyBoecksMom: I didn't know you have that struggle with naps/sleep. How much does your LO naps/sleeps? You are right.... I have to accept that my own is different from the others.... That's just who he is...

But guess what you guys.... today we went in for the GI follow up. LO's weight was 18lb 8oz when we went in for the 9 month appointment. Today he is 10 months + a few days old. His official weight in was 18lb 1 oz. SIGH SIGH SIGH! I think he must have lost a pound or more just within last week. I really hope this teething or whatever phase he is in goes away quickly so he can resume eating a bit more stuff. The docs are not concerned though - they still think he's doing fine. So I am trying to chill.

@irene: Would you say he regularly doesn't eat much? Or that it's more common for him to snack instead of eat a full meal? If your doctor says he's growing and progressing, then maybe you should start looking at what's "normal" for your LO, instead of comparing to other babies or guidelines.

I had to do that for my LO in regards to her sleep. Everything I read and heard said that babies should get "x" amount of sleep and "x" # of naps and I nearly had a breakdown every day trying to force her to get her to nap and take longer naps. One day, it clicked that my LO just isn't going to nap like other babies. I just started going off her cues and we built our own guidelines of what's normal for her. Once I did that, life got a lot better and a lot less stressful.

I don't know if that will help you, but I thought I would share.

@irene: My LO is 19 months old and drinks 8 oz of splash and nurses 5 times a day/night. He eats solids like a little piggy though (3 hot dogs for lunch) he just doesn't gain weight. My husband is a little worried but not much. He started feeding him milk behind my back (luckily no bad reactions yet).

You know what you are doing mama. He won't starve and you just have to keep it up. We talked to a nutritionist and it ultimately comes to the calorie count.

@sarac: If he's only acts like that, say once a month, I'd feel so much better. But no! Each time a phase passes he only resumes *normal* eating habits for a few days, then another round of non-eating starts. ah anyway. I am not worried anymore because I think I used up all my worry cells in my brain.

@winniebee: 4th percentile and 20% at height is great improvement! Yes I stopped worrying about the chart too.

RE: What you say about genetics... It is funny because when I mention it to my mom or MIL+FIL that their grandson only drank 9-10 oz of milk THE WHOLE DAY, or drink very little each feed, or skipping multiple bottles, they were like, oh really? That's not possible.... and they say it in a very concerned tone. In the back of my mind I was thinking, no! You supposed to tell me, hey no worries, you (or DH) were like that when you (or DH) were a baby! The way they were so concerned it means that none of us were like that when we were a baby - so what's up with LO? sigh. Ha. Argh.

@irene: It sounds like you have done everything that you can do, mama. You're doing a great job. I hope this little blip passes. Tyler is still in the 4th percentile for weight but he's jumped to 20th for height. Fact is, my husband and I were never even on the charts as babies we were so small! I think part of it is genetics and regardless of how much he stuffs himself he'll never be a chubby baby.

Yes, this happens to me. My 14 month old goes through hungry and not hungry weeks, and if she's sick, she's even less hungry than before. Unless your baby is skin and bones (doubt it), you really REALLY don't need to be so concerned. I know that when I'm sick I lose my appetite, and I've got plenty of fat stores to keep me going. Same for yours.

Thanks everyone -- to be honest, if it wasn't y'all 's support, I would probably still be running in circles while pulling my hair out. Now I am just chilled without looking at the scale and believe that he's OK. I don't like it but it's OK.

@brownie: How much is your LO eating/drinking a day now? How old is your LO again? What does your husband think ? Is he worried too?

@rachiecakes: @Maysprout: I am sure something is going on in his mouth. He grabs his mouth and cries... and he is just fussy overall... I just can't wait for this whole "teething" thing to be over with! Argh

@lollipop: HAHA I laughed so hard because that's how I feel too! Either throwing tons of food out or bottles of bottles of milk/formula out. And formula is NOT CHEAP! Last night when he refused his bedtime bottle I actually yelled at him. :( I know I shouldn't do that but I was so frustrated :( Everytime I thought the phase passes then another phase hits again. We don't have growth spurts but have Non-grow spurts.

@London Mama: How nice that your LO is EBF... we used to be EBF too until he rejected to nurse at 8+ months... it just becomes too hard to pump exclusively so I quitted completely just recently, at his 10 month birthday.

@winniebee: Wow your baby is making so much progress! Has he made out of the 1%? He has to if he's eating 22-28 oz a day! And thanks for sharing your experience about daycare... I hope we'll be fine with the transition...

Yes we went to the GI. did a series of tests (stool sample, upper GI, OPMS - some kind of "x-ray" to look at how he swallows food) and all came back normal. Worked with a nutritionist too. I am just pissed because everytime you think he ate better and gotten heavier, some sort of teething or sickness or whatever is going to take all that away. We have stopped the reflux medicine for the past few days because I noticed he vomits right after I gave him the medicine.... so I stopped it until I see the doc tomorrow (which I am sure he'll tell me to restart on it...)

@Sammyfab: Not like he ever drinks water anyway.... maybe a few sips. I did try putting formula into the sippy the first night he rejected the bottle. He just doesn't want anything to do with it. Then we are already in the nipple size for 4-12 months.... he usually takes it fine until I dunno what happened the past few days..

Aww...hugs to you mama. I know you've had a lot of ongoing issues with your LO's eating. Like @Brownie said, babies won't starve themselves and you're doing everything you can to make sure he's getting food.

Have you tried offering formula in a sippy or regular cup? Or do you need to change the nipple? I don't know...just throwing some ideas out there!

I'm so sorry you are going through this. I know you have been very, very stressed about your son's feeding issues for awhile. I think you also know my backstory by now....I want to let you know that you aren't alone in worrying about your son's eating habits. Even though my son is now feeding much better and I can count on him to eat 22-28 ounces a day (depending on if he has a night waking), I still keep a detailed log of his intake and it's always on my mind.

It sounds like the tummy bug he had is impacting his appetite, which seems normal. I forget if you have already been to the GI specialist? It's great that you are going next week. I know you feel like it's pointless, but try to remember they are experts and any insight they can give is better than none.

RE: daycare. I was very, very nervous about my son starting daycare and that he would be a finicky eater and that I would be constantly worried about it. He started daycare at just over 5 months and he's now 6.5 months. The first few days there, he didn't eat all that well, honestly. He was getting to know his teachers and was SO nosy about everything going on there. But since week 2, he has eaten very very well for them. He eats better for his teachers than he does for me! He eats at least 15 oz while there (three 5 oz bottles) plus eats 2 small solids meals there (cereal then food). I think a lot of it has to do with that he sees other kids eating and learns from them. So, maybe it will help for your LO too?

My DS has been going through some of this, too. He's been rejecting bottles for the past few weeks, some days taking less than 10 ounces in the whole day. In fact, yesterday he only took 8. A couples that have helped us are offering him formula in his sippy cup and giving him bottles when he's sleepy/ half asleep. Also dont worry too much unless he actually starts showing digns of a problem. All babies go through phases and likelihood is that this will pass soon enough.

@skibobrown: @BabyBoecksMom: Actually he does have less wet diapers, and he did have less drool. He is still crying with tears though. I don't know. I did call the nurse thursday and friday and they said as long as he is still having a wet diaper every 6-8 hours we are OK. so we are still OK.

And yes I think I can get him to eat foods with a high water content - in fact I am giving him porridge once a day so I hope that helps.... in the morning I also give him cereal mixed in with milk too... but bottom line is I can't mix in say 3-4 oz of milk in solids because he keeps skipping bottles. Sigh...

@brownie: Hugggssss.... To be honest, I don't even know how much my LO weighs now because I hide the scale. I think I would go crazy if I know how much he weighs. I just don't like how he eats 9-10 oz of formula a day at 10 months and rejected 3 bottles! Argh!

@autumnlove: I am in the same boat with you (he's enrolled at daycare at 11.5 months) - except that it is a pain to even feed my LO with a bottle, by STRANGERS. I don't know what is going to happen.

@T-Mom: I wish we had breastmilk too but we are done... but the sad thing is, he threw up the past few days when I was feeding him the last bits of breastmilk we had in the fridge. I was so upset and was thinking why can't you puke when I gave you formula??? hahaha

I am kinda surprised he seem to be eating solids just fine. It is just the bottles he is rejecting or drinking very little.

We were giving him a prescribed medication for acid reflux too but I haven't done that started yesterday because I noticed he puked immediately AFTER I gave him the medication. Sigh. Besides, he really didn't have a history of puking. Thank god we have a GI appt next week but I have a feeling it is not gonna be very helpful...

@BabyBoecksMom: Thanks for the tips ! This feels like nursing strike all over again except now he doesn't even want bottle. Argh! What does he want from me? I think it is a mix of teething and virus too - the virus seemed to have gone away but he'd touch his mouth and cry a lot the past few days....

Poor guy :-( and poor you!

If he's had a stomach virus, I wouldn't force him to eat because it can take a few days before the stomach gets back to normal. But I would worry about dehydration if he hasn't had many fluids in the past few days. I know when DD had pneumonia, she didn't eat well for 2 weeks after having her antibiiotics, but now she's eating like crazy to gain back the weight she lost.

As long as he doesn't have signs of dehydration (ie: cries w/o tears, less/no saliva, decreased wet diapers), just let him guide you to when he's ready to eat again. Try to keep offering him the BRAT (Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast) diet until he gets back to normal.

It really sounds like he is recovering from gastroenteritis or something like that! In which case his little tummy is probably still sensitive so I would not be surprised if he refuses food or even milk. When DS got this recently I fed him porridge and toast until he was better and limited his dairy intake. He didn't have much appetite at all. I think breastmilk is still good to push so he will stay hydrated or you can even try some pedialyte. Hopefully he will get better soon!

I'm so sorry! Feeding can be very stressful...I was just freaking out this morning because my LO hates the sippy or straw cup for breastmilk/formula and I really want her to move into the young toddler room in January!

Sending you lots of hugs!

I spend every hour of my day thinking about food and eating and weight. My son is 19 months old. Some people make fun of me for it but it literally consumes my life.

He only gained 8 oz over the last 2 months and then got the flu and lost 6 oz. So almost no gain for 3 months. I was practically crying at the doctor's office.

I have to remember that really, a child will not choose to starve themselves. He looks and acts healthy and is just a little boy I think. I have to stop worrying so much (at least thats what I tell myself).

Seriously, feeding gods, I am done with this struggle with worrying what my LO is eating.

LO is 10 months. He had some sort of virus or I don't know what, but he threw up for the past 3 days (all in the morning). Today is the first day he didn't puke. He acts pretty much fine though for those 3 days - a bit less active, but overall OK.

Then he has been having crying spells. I think he is teething really bad because he would have very fussy sessions which he'd grab his mouth and cry. Starting Friday I think our nanny already said he skipped 1 bottle - ie. refuse it and push it away when it is offered.

Then yesterday, he drank maybe 9 oz in total THE WHOLE DAY with 1 oz probably being vomited out. He ate solids fine and won't drink water when it is offered. He also refused the before bedtime bottle. I thought he'd wake up and cry in the middle of the night but he didn't do that until this morning at 6:30am (he goes to bed at 7:30p).

Today is even worse:

6:30am he drank 4 oz
8:15am he ate maybe 2.5 oz of solids
10:30-11am REJECTED the 11am bottle (we were driving somewhere - he stirred at around 10:30-ish and I made him a formula bottle - but he rejected and rejected until we finally arrived to the town and can have lunch at a restaurant - then he ate lunch - no milk)
11:30am lunch 2.5 oz of solids (maybe)
1:30pm 5 oz (after quite a bit struggle and distraction by dangling things when he's drinking)
3:30-4:30pm REJECTED his bottle again!
5:15pm dinner at restaurant cried because he's so hungry ate maybe 4 oz of solids?
7:00 brushed his teeth and he CRIED HYSTERICALLY (Oh how I regreted that)
7:20 REJECTED HIS BEDTIME BOTTLE AGAIN

So today with the milk in the solids I gave him, he had maybe 9.5-10 oz of formula+breastmilk, and 9 oz of solids, for the entire day. Guidelines say 16-24 oz of formula/breastmilk minimum a day and my friends all have babies that eats that much. SOMEONE PLEASE KILL ME!!! Does this happen to anyone at all? So he drinks less than 10 oz every day for 2-3 days now. Sometimes I really wonder if he might die of SIDS because he doesn't eat.
