@MenagerieMama: Well at least for me, I'd be getting either the Skyla or the Mirena out long before they "needed" replaced so the we could TTC #2.

In my opinion the skyla and Mirena are basically the same but the skyla is a marketing ploy to convince people of some benefit so that they end up with an IUD that needs replacement at 3 yrs rather than 5 and therefore the drug company makes more money. Not to mention restarting the clock on when a generic can come out. My understanding is the insertion device is essentially the same as the mirena - both devices are small. That's my two cents anyhow and I haven't read the fine details on the skyla (clearly I should so I can have a stronger argument!). But I suppose I'm all for more reasons for people to get an IUD!

@Mrs.KMM: I had been on bcp for several years and when I stopped taking them, to TTC, I was amazed at how much different I felt. The hormones in Skyla haven't been noticeable to me. I had tried the mini pill before I got the Skyla and HATED it.

@Applesandbananas: Glad to hear insertion was easy. I had to be induced at 37 weeks due to severe pre-e and I never dilated past 4 cm (all manually done via foley bulb) so I hoped the smaller size might make insertion easier since I didn't have a vaginal birth. Plus, we'd like a 2-2.5 year gap between kids.

@dc yoga bee: Yeah - the hormone difference didn't look like much but I figure every little bit helps! I always had to be on low hormone birth control pills or my body freaked out on me.

I'm getting skyla at my 6 week apt. I believe it secretes slightly less hormones as well. I'm undecided about a second, but prefer as few side effects from hormonal birth control as possible. I can easily get another one after 3 years.

@Foodnerd81: no, everyone's uterus shrinks down after birth. It's more the diameter of the device.

I had the mirena before I ever got pregnant and am going for the Jaydess (same as skyla, just cdn name) in the next few weeks. Insertion wasn't that bad take Advil before you go it helps!

@sapphire: @Applesandbananas: that explains so much - I had a scheduled c-section and having mirena inserted was horribly painful for me!

@sapphire: @Applesandbananas: I never thought about the vaginal birth or dilation thing- just assumed it was more to do with the size of the uterus or something? That makes sense though.

I have a Skyla IUD. I chose it over the Mirena because I never dilated during childbirth and because I thought we'd have a second within 3 years. The insertion was painless, just a little uncomfortable, like a Pap smear.

The Skyla is a little smaller so easier to insert for those who haven't had a vaginal birth. Same hormones as Mirena. Doesn't last as long but you can have either removed whenever you want.

I just saw this advertised at my midwifes office- had never heard of it before. I looked online briefly and it looks like it's marketed more towards women who haven't had a baby, where the mirena still says it's ideal for women who have already had a baby. And it's good for 3 years vs 5 for mirena (which if you want a second within that time, doesn't matter). I am planning to just ask about the difference when I get closer to the end of my current pregnancy but since this is my last, I would probably go with mirena just for the 5 years instead of 3.

Curious to learn more though.

Does anyone here have any experience with the Skyla IUD?

DH and I just had our first child 2 1/2 weeks ago. Prior to this pregnancy, I have always used birth control pills as my birth control method. But I have decided that I want to try an IUD now between our first and second children. I have requested the Skyla IUD from my OB to be inserted at my six week postpartum appointment. Just curious if anyone else has chosen this IUD and what their experiences with it were.
