Our son climbed out of his PNP at 27 months and shortly thereafter attempted it with the crib at home. DH's sister did this when she was a child and broke her collarbone, so DH was not okay with leaving him in the crib.

We transitioned our son to a Privacy Pop bed tent with a twin mattress inside as a transitional floor bed. Basically, it zips closed so its the same kind of contained environment the crib provided but in a bigger space. The downside is you cant see inside it on the monitor when they are zipped up (although you can see the tent shaking around if they're awake and moving inside). My son is highly overstimulated and needs sensory deprivation, so this worked really well for him. He cried for a few minutes the first day he slept in it, but settled down and went to sleep. I think by the 3rd day, there was no tears and he just went to bed. Eventually he learned to unzip the tent, but we put a lock on his door so he couldn't get out and roam the house.

We recently at 3.5 transitioned him to an Ikea KURA bed, only because he wanted to be able to to use the potty. But without the enclosure of the tent, he was NOT able to calm it down and sleep. He was getting in and out of bed until like 11pm some nights. We had to go back to Ikea and get the playhouse tent that goes OVER that dang bed and wouldn't you know it, he sleeps just fine. He's like a freaking canary.

We just removed everything from his room except his stuffed animals and a few books and a puzzle, locked his closet door, and put a doorknob cover in his room with a Paw Patrol night light so he can see his little potty at night.

just a different perspective. I just transitioned my almost 2 year old into a bed about a month ago @23months. we have a baby coming this week so I wanted the crib. I thought it was going to be terrible, but its actually been amazing. She sleeps better in the bed. She has not tried to get out or stand up once I lay her down in bed. She used to scream and cry standing up in her crib occasionally. It's been almost a month and she has been absolutely great for all naps and night sleep.

We transitioned my 2.5yo to a toddler bed (basically just removed one rail of his crib and put up a little side rail) about a month ago, the first week or two was rough but he sleeps great now! I think 6 months ago it would have been rough.

He still has his paci and he is EXTREMELY attached. I know we need to take it away but I'm afraid it's going to wreck his sleep...

@erinbaderin: okay good i tend to agree with the notion that it's too early for a toddler bed - i'm chalking up the climbing out to this phase right now. in regards to a sleep sack, its an interesting thought. he had one when he was an infant and then he transitioned out of it. worth starting back up again?

I wouldn't recommend switching from a crib at this age - he's so young, from what I understand they don't have the self control to not get out of bed. Can you drop the crib so the mattress is right on the ground, or introduce a sleep sack?

@starchild: we're thinking of switching up the bed this weekend but it's just really poor timing because daylight savings is coming up, this regression is happening, his paci is gone, and he's sick now too - so just all of these things seem like a mountain to overcome all at one time.

If you're not ready for a bed yet, you have other options depending on how adept at climbing out he is.
1) Drop it if it's not already
2) Sew a strip of fabric between the legs of his PJs so he can't swing his leg up over the top
3) Sleep sack worn backwards so he can't get out of it and again removes the ability to swing his leg over.

Good luck!

@leighleigh: Stay strong! We took the paci away right before 2 and it went really well and then went downhill. As hard as it was, we were adamant and after a week everything was fine. My 2.5 year old is still in the crib so I can't speak to that, but I know a few people who found ditching the crib to work wonders for sleep. I think the rule of thumb is that once they can get out of the crib to switch to a crib because they can hurt themselves falling.

we sleep trained my son at 13m and it lasted until about 2.5 years. then he had a long period (maybe triggered by illness?) where sleep was a disaster. those periods always seem like they will never end, but then they do! either time or sometimes some sort of change - I think it his case it was when his sister slept in his room while we had visitors and it kind of reset him. so it's hard to give a time frame but I do think it will end.

I'd try to keep the paci away. we only took my son's away at about 1.5 months before 3 so I totally get using it, but I think it will be just as hard the second time to try to remove it so maybe just get it over with.

unless you have an option to drop the crib lower and buy some time I think a bed is the way to go, just so nothing happens where he falls out and breaks his arm or something. we did the bed and paci transition together and it sucked for a while but now it's done and not so bad. except he usually wants to come in our bed around 4:30am - still working on that!

hugs while you work it out - it's awful in the thick of it. maybe aim to have a plan for you and your partner to equally share the wake ups and a way to be consistent on how you put him back to bed.

We decided to take my son's paci away cold-turkey on his 2nd birthday. The first 2-3 nights were surprisingly great... it took a little more coaxing to get settled, but I considered it a win. Then all of a sudden he started FREAKING out when we'd put him down at night and would also wake up screaming even after being asleep for a while. Come to find out there's a 2 year sleep regression - fun. As part of his breakdowns he's started climbing out of the crib. My questions are 3-fold.
1) How long does this regression last?
2) We'd be stupid to give him back the paci for bedtime, right?
3) Do we have to move him to a toddler bed now?

p.s. he was previously sleep trained to perfection and with his paci was definitely a STAR sleeper.

For us, I think we will try putting her back in the crib when she becomes too active. She's almost 5 mo and still in the merlin suit, so she doesn't move much when she sleeps so I just make sure to block off the edge of our bed with my long body pillow and I put the pnp next to the bed also just in case (more to prop up the body pillow).

Do you have a monitor in your room too? I'm struggle with moving the monitor back & forth between rooms, or biting the bullet to get a 2nd monitor..

@mrskc: I understand your point, but I don't think pillows on the floor are a suffocation hazard to the same extent as pillows in the bed. My pillows were the chair pads off my Ikea Poang, so they were padded but firm, not a fluffy down-filled pillow. We had ceramic tile floors at the time. Even a 10-inch or so drop is a pretty big fall for a small baby, and I didn't want LO dropping onto a hard floor.

Also, I echo the sentiments above that until they can safely get down on their own, you need to stay close by. I padded the floor, but we didn't rely very much on that precaution.

@junebugsmama: My daughter sleeps with us in the bed at night. We didn't want to put our bedroom mattress on the floor, so we ended up taking down the crib and putting a twin on the floor. So she naps on that and I can just nurse her or lay next to her until she falls asleep then roll away. She 8 months right now. I also put up a bed rail on my bed for nighttime, because she either sleeps in the middle or edge of the bed depending on which side she is nursing on.

pillows around the floor would make me nervous until baby can really crawl & move around well. I'd rather her just fall on the carpet. But since the mattress is on the floor, it's not a long drop.

My son napped in our bed. You need to 1) perfect your ninja bed-escape moves, and 2) probably put the mattress on the floor and pad the surrounding floor area with pillows once he starts to roll, especially if you don't have carpet. (You don't really have to be all that ninja. Once my son conked out for the nap, I just got up. ;) )

If completely redecorating your bedroom for cosleeping isn't your thing, I'm sure that you could get some of those bed rails that they sell for toddler beds. If you want to redecorate, Ikea sells excellent, inexpensive floor buffer pillows (although I don't think they call them that!).

My 19 month old still naps on our bed. If possible, I would suggest setting up a mattress on the floor for naps, because it's really nerve-wracking once they learn how to roll over or crawl but before they can safely climb down from the bed.

My baby is currently in the 4m sleep regression (wahhh).

Last night finally went better, but so far cosleeping has been the only that makes it manageable. I am still not fully on board with cosleeping, ideally, he will start doing his first long stretch again (instead of like 10pm first wake up and never back to sleep unless held) in his crib, and then he'll be in bed with me from 4-5 on. I love cosleeping on the nights that it goes well, but some nights he seems to be so unsettled.

Because he's been sleeping much better on our bed, on a whim yesterday I tried nursing him to sleep for a nap on the bed (side lying and then snuck away). And he magically slept for over 90 min, I mopped and cleaned the kitchen and bathroom, and it was amazing! Normally he's been nursing to sleep, and I set him in his crib, and about half the time he wakes up immediately and half the time he wakes up in 30-45 min in a cranky mood. I did it again today after I couldn't get him to settle nursing or rocking him in the nursery and he's almost at 90 min again, alone on our bed! He doesn't roll yet, but I have pillows around the edges, he's swaddled, and he's in the middle of our cal king.

So assuming this may be my new go to method of getting a nice nap out of him, what are the logistics for naps, cosleepers of the hive? I know everything may change in the next few weeks as he gets through this damn sleep regression . Hopefully for the better!

Thanks for reading :)

At both 4 and 9 months sleep got worse, but not BAD. At 4 months we went from one waking between 3 and 5 to one waking between 12 and 1, and another between 3 and 5. Annoying, but not a huge problem esp since I was still on mat leave. At 9 months, we had teeting and jetlag thrown into the mix and sleep got rough for a while - needing patting to fall asleep and waking up once or twice a night after consistently sleeping through from 6 months. But really, neither were terrible. Good luck!

My older son didn't do it, but he was born 6 weeks early so his adjusted age was behind. But I never felt he was truly 6 weeks behind his actual age.
My second son went through it BAD. We did sleep training shortly after he turned 4 months and it took forever for him to get it. Then sleep got even worse at 6 months and finally got better at 7 months.

I don't think we technically had a sleep regression. But maybe we did if you can count a few off nights. When he learned to roll A little after 4 months we had a few bad nights of rolling and waking. But all in all he's been sleeping through the night. 5 months and 1 week today.

My first never had anything like that. My second was a crappy sleeper anyway so I didn't notice anything worse around 4 months.

We did have one and it felt bad at the time, it was our first sleep regression after sleep training, and we had no idea what was happening or if it would ever end but in hindsight it wasn't bad...

Sleep was pretty rotten in general until around 9 months, but it didn't get worse at 4 months. I don't think it could have gotten worse...
