@agold: Thank you for you reply!! I don't find pacifiers to be bad at night -- my 3 year old used them and they were a life saver for him. However, I can tell it is a real sleep crutch for my younger son, so I am trying to wean him off it a bit before he can then put it in on his own. Unfortunately he doesn't like the wubanub otherwise that would be a good option.

I totally agree with you on the fact that the crying is more a sign of not being ready to wake up than it is anything else...Thats exactly how my older son was.

The 4am waking is tough for us right now because I can tell he starts by being half awake and happy and then goes full fledge awake, and then it's impossible to get him back down. He starts happy, then it goes to whine, then it goes to cry if I don't respond. So I feel like by stopping it in its tracks by holding him, it helps, but really I am just doing myself a disservice. Fingers crossed this coming night/morning are better if I let him sleep in his crib.

No advice, but commiseration as well. I hate the early morning wakes up. I don't know why you think pacifiers at night are terrible. I put like 3-4 wubanubs in my girl's crib and she's 14 months. I didn't co-sleep with her, but I did move her out of my room at 6 months. I find that when she wakes up crying, she's not ready to wake up yet. I did a little bit of cry it out to help her with sleep training. It was not at all painful like I thought it would be. Today she woke up crying early, standing up in her crib, so I knew she wasn't ready to be up. She cried for maybe 2 minutes and put herself back down to sleep for another 50 minutes and got up at her normal wake up time. I don't know how you can let your baby cry a little when he's in your bed with you. Good luck with how ever you choose to handle it!

No advice but commiseration. I remember between 4-6 am were a total crap shoot for my son for quite a long time. I think I read something somewhere that said it had something to do with their sleep cycles and particularly early morning is difficult for them to get back to sleep. We never sleep trained and thankfully by about 9 months things started to sort themselves out and our son was a champion sleeper from 12 months onwards.

Also I personally would not worry about the pacifier. Just do what you gotta do. We let DS have his til 2 yrs old and it was fine. Sleep time only from about 12-14 months old.

Whenever we started to lose our minds due to sleep fluctuations, DW and I would split shifts so each person got 4-5 hrs uninterrupted. I would stay up till midnight or 1-2am depending and she could sleep from 7-8 pm and onwards. It saved us (and we didn't have a toddler then!)

ETA: DW and I would sleep in separate rooms with earplugs depending on who's shift it was. Then we would bring the monitor to the other person when it was time to switch. Maybe your DH could handle the toddler wake ups in another room or stay up later for a bit to give you a break?

Hi all,

My son will be 6 months old in 10 days, and these last couple of weeks sleep has been all over the place, but overall not great. My older son was a great sleeper so having a hard time with this little guy. Ollie is EBF and cosleeps with us - (sleeps all naps in crib and has slept a couple of nights in crib but usually just in dock-a-tot on top of covers next to us) has a three nap schedule, ((wake 630, nap 8:45-9:30 (cannot stretch this longer!), nap 11:30-12:15 (wakes and he can’t fall asleep on own so I rock him back to sleep till 1:15), nap 3:30-4:00pm, nurse upon waking, nurse 5:45, start bedtime after 6:10, he’s asleep between 6:30-7pm)) but is very fussy early morning from 4am to where I now hold him in my arms and let him sleep till 6-6:30am. I dreamfeed him at 10pm (probably too early but he usually wakes out of habit and has hard time self soothing) and then wakes at 1:30am, 4am and then he’s half awake and fussy rest of morning till 6am. I feed him when he wakes at night even though I know I shouldn't but it makes it easier to get him back to sleep.

I haven’t truly started sleep training yet because I was waiting till 6 mos. I’ve gotten him to fall asleep without pacifier (through CIO) and only a lovey but I’m terrible and give him pacifier at night :meh: .... to make matters more complicated, he’s been pooping at night in the last two weeks (eating too much?) and our 3 year old is having terrible nightmares and has been coming in to us (luckily not usually waking baby but me!) I’m slowly losing my mind being up from 4am and awake so many times per night. I’ve read almost every baby sleep book out there so I know most of the techniques, just don’t know which to try in this case?

Thankful for all the advice I can get!!

It very well could be the time change. It could also be teething, learning to walk, sleep regression, separation anxiety, who knows. If she's falling asleep to the patting it could be that she has a new sleep assoc. I never did all-out CIO either, but I did find that if I waited 5-10 min before going in, that sometimes she fell back asleep which somehow gave her the message that she doesn't need to be up that often.

@Mamatang: I can't advise, but I can commiserate. Does she cry at all when you are in the room? We attempted CIO with our little one for going to bed only (at the time he woke up twice to eat and we weren't planning to cut any feeds). It took longer than the average, but he started putting himself to sleep. THEN he started waking more and more frequently in the night. It got so bad that we started co-sleeping.

Some days I think the sleep training made things worse. Some days I think we should sleep train for MOTN.

Hope something works for you soon!

I need help! I started sleep training my little girl who is 10mo about a week ago. I am seeing progress but need some help with mton waking! I cannot do CIO so I sit next to her until she falls asleep by reassuring her through verbal or touch. Except the very first night where she fell asleep while I pat her all the rest she fell asleep by herself with me sitting on a chair that's about 5 feet away from her. First night she made couple sounds through out the night but was able to fell back asleep within a second. The 2-4 nights she would have 1 wake up and will fall back asleep after I go in and pat her down. (I never take her out of her crib). I was quite happy with this as she was waking up 5-6 times a night when co-sleeping! However, for the past 4 nights she started waking up more and more often. Last night, she woke up 5 times! I can distinguish btw tired moaning and "mommy, I need you cry" and really don't want to let her cry it out. What should I be doing differently? Is it because of daylight saving? She's waking up at her "old" wake up time in the morning but going down for naps and bed all at the same time as before. She's currently on 2 naps, (9am and 1:30pm with bedtime of 7pm, wakes up at 5am) She hasn't been napping well the last 3 days, could this be the reason? Any help or advice is greatly appreciated!
