I have never fallen asleep while nursing her or with her in bed or my arms or anything. I am just so terrified of dropping her or rolling over on her or hurting her in any way. Sometimes I get jealous of those people who can fall asleep with their baby on their chest. I just can't...

I had this problem. We didn't have a comfortable place to nurse in his room, so I would lie down on the spare bed in there and wind up inadvertently co-sleeping. I wound getting a glider for his room which solved the problem.

Note: For most of the first eight weeks, I pumped at night and my husband bottle-fed the baby. This was because breastfeeding was too painful for me to do round the clock. So, I didn't have this issue with a newborn.

@Glitter: fair. G tended to choke on mine for a while as well, even sitting up, but she got used to it. I also find that the angle is better for me if I am laying on two pillows and she is on the mattress. It took/is still taking us a while to figure out, but it is great when I'm dead tired and for early morning snuggles!

Have you considered side nursing? I started doing that in the middle of that night, and it made a big difference. Sometimes, we would both fall asleep while nursing and end up covered in milk. But she got fed and I got to doze, so win-win :)

I struggle with this every night! Like pps I browse the internet on my phone, HB, stuff I want to buy, research etc. But I have fallen asleep with my phone in my hand many times. LO lays on a boppy which makes him a bit safer, but I once woke up to find myself catching him as he was about to roll onto the floor :bummed: I find I am worse during wake ups between 2 and 3 am - so these times I just try and make a serious effort to stay engaged in what I am reading!

I'm doing it now! I get on my phone. I read blogs, HelloBee, and this has become my Pinterest time, as well. I'm still tired enough that I don't struggle to fall asleep afterwards.

Editing to add: I'm breastfeeding right now, but usually I pump earlier and give DD a bottle for her motn feeding. It goes more quickly and I'm able to pump after I put her back down and still get to sleep faster than I might were I breastfeeding.

@Mrs. Yoyo: LOL...it certainly helped me stay awake last time I was up nursing. I actually stayed awake longer than I should have...oops!

I usually play on my phone. I get up and go to the living room and nurse him there as well. If I don't have something to do I fall asleep. I did it a lot when I was up every 2 hours because I just couldn't stay awake. I always use a boppy at night to help protect LO if I fall asleep. I think it does help to be in a chair though. I usually wake up because my head falls or my neck hurts.

I don't! The more sleepy I stay, the easier it us to get back to sleep when I put her back down. We have a rocker/recliner in her room, so I just let her fall asleep on my chest after burping, and let myself get nice and sleepy again.

I've found getting up and going to the nursery helps. I'd start to fall asleep if I just had to grab a baby and sit in our room. Also I read books on my Nook app on my phone. Reading a book keeps me more engaged than just browse rwndom things on the internet. Online shopping in the middle of the night helped too, but started to get expensive. Obviously I do a fair bit of HBing in the middle of the night too! ;)
