My ring sling was a lifesaver! It was the only one that tricked him into thinking he was being held. That being sad he got heavy fast. Now thank god he likes the tula more. And I just got a mei tai which might have worked a little earlier.

I have an Ergo and a Boba - the soft structured carriers. I preferred them to my sling because there was less room for human error. I was always paranoid she would fall out of the sling.

@T.H.O.U.: DH's left arm is in tact, but he can't move it. He can use his right hand to position the left arm, and the arm does have some increased muscle tone so it's not completely limp. Unfortunately he also has left neglect, so his arm could fall off his armrest and he may not notice right away.

I don't think DH would do anything unsafe while holding baby. If anything, I think he might be overly cautious and afraid to hold him. I want him to have something like a carrier to help him feel more secure.

@macintosh: So just curious, is his other arm ok?

I was amazed this year to see a mom at our breastfeeding group that only has one arm (well I guess she had the upper portion of her other arm). She was able to get the baby out of the car seat, lift the newborn up with one hand and get into position to nurse. You may be surprised what your husband may be able to do without a carrier!

I think that DH can do skin to skin in the hospital with a bit of help and supervision. His chair can recline and he can certainly hold baby with his right arm.

i've only used a ring sling with a toddler, but i am definitely going to use it for baby #2 when he is a newborn. there is a small learning curve (like with any carrier, but not nearly as much as a wrap), it's relatively easy in and out, and probably the least intrusive in terms of sitting down (the ergo belt is quite wide, as you know).

I used a ring-sling the most when he was a newborn! When I tried our Ergo, if I sat down, he woke up because I guess he was uncomfortable, and the Moby was too much for me to figure out. The sling was so easy to slip on and off, and I could sit down and stand up and he'd stay fast asleep. It worked incredibly well for traveling too.

I think a ring sling would be great! We used it for DD2 daily for the first couple months and it kept my hands free to do other stuff. We had her strapped up high so I had no trouble sitting down with the carrier on. A moby or other type of stretchy wrap is another great option.

If your only issue with the ergo is the infant insert, check out the beco gemini. No insert required! Maybe try a peanut shell sling. If it's mainly for extra security while DH is sitting with her that could work. I dont personally love them for doing a lot of moving around in them.

@macintosh: My mind immediately went to ring-slings. There's some flexibility with positioning (so you don't have to hold them just one way), you could use one comfortably sitting down, they are easier to adjust, and it would be easier to get baby out of a ring sling versus, say, a wrap. It might be nice for him to try one out if you are able to find a group near you--depending on the specifics of his mobility he might be able to adjust it on his own, or he might need some help. There's an awesome "headrest" trick you can do with a ring sling for more newborn head support: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PsBzuK93h5Y

@macintosh: I used a moby when lo was tiny but indont think it would be a good option in your case. The ktan is similar but easier to get on and off, might be worth trying out.

Just wanted to point out you cannot use a regular ergo facing out. There is the ergo 360, or Beco gemini, which both have front facing out options, if that's important to you (I have a beco and love it but use it primarily walking outside. I can sit with her in it but it's not the most comfortable ever. Then again my LO is 28 months old now).

@Rockies11: hehe, baby burrito! I imagine we'll use the a Ergo when he has head control and also when he's bigger and can face out sitting on dad's lap. I'll probably use it for outings, too.

@Mae: I definitely plan to help him with putting baby in the sling. We can also prop his left arm under baby if that helps positioning. Good idea with the baby wearing groups! Where would you find that - Facebook?

I did a quick search and found this: http://www.thebabasling.com

We have a toddler Tula (they also make baby Tulas) and I find it very easy to get on and off and it's pretty comfortable to sit with LO, but I didn't start using it until he was a toddler so I can't speak to that factor for the baby Tula.

Is there anywhere locally you can try out carriers? The Tula has two buckles, I think you'll have to help him get it on and off, but it's very easy. The toddler Tula is really adjustable and LO has had sippies and stuff while in it.

@macintosh: I know that you can use ring slings for newborns and he could definitely put it on/off without help. You would definitely have to help him get baby in/out and tighten it/loosen it for him because that takes two hands. I had a ring sling when LO was a newborn but personally I could never get her in there in a way that felt secure to me so I didn't really use it until LO was a few months old (although now it is my fav!).

Although I'm sort of wondering if he is going to be just sitting if you could/should maybe look into alternate "carries" with the ring sling that are maybe looser and would not be appropriate for standing/walking but maybe would be as an aid to just holding the baby in a seated position. If you have a local baby wearing group I would really recommend going to a meeting and talking to a leader there. They usually have weighted dolls to practice with and they could probably talk you through the safety precautions to be used with any sort of wrap/sling/carrier and things to watch out for if you're using "alternate" type carries to just assist him in holding your LO! :)

I didn't use the insert with Ergo because my little peanut fit fine in the pocket with her legs frogged up right away. I didn't have any trouble with her head. I could sit down with it on just fine. The insert is weird - like a baby burrito or something, so I didn't end up using it. I had a ring sling and a wrap, and I just couldn't get a good fit that felt secure with a newborn without having a hand on it at all times. I don't think any carrier is easy to get on and off with one hand - I have had a lot of slings, wraps, and carriers and none of them are easy to get off and on, honestly.

@Mae: thanks for responding! I'm assuming that I'll help DH get the baby in and out if the carrier, but it would be nice of he could get it on and off without me.

I'm thinking more along the lines of a ring sling in terms or sideways positioning, but I'm not sure if it's supportive enough for the baby's head.

We had a moby when LO was a newborn and loved it but it does not meet all of your criteria (I can't think of a carrier that does-- but I haven't really used all that many).

- I would say with some practice it is easy to get on/off but definitely not with one hand. He will definitely require your help because it is wrapping and tying (although you pre-tie it then put baby in-- but I still don't know if you could do that with one hand. I sort of feel like newborns will always require two hands because you need one for butt and one for head)

- It is very comfortable for both wearer and baby, although maybe a bit hot so better in cooler months or indoors than out for walks when it is hot out.

- Easy to soothe baby. Maaaybe easy to feed? I mean any carrier the baby is going to be chest to chest with you so that's going to be a little awkward. But you could probably make it work.

- Safe for head/neck -- yep. You tuck their head into one of the shoulder passes.

- It is very fast to get baby out if needed.

I plan on getting an Ergo for LO with the idea that it will help DH to safely hold him, since he lacks the use of his left arm.

I'm thinking we'll probably need another type of sling or carrier for the newborn phase since I've heard the newborn insert isn't the most precise fit when they are little.

Can anyone recommend a great newborn carrier? I'm looking for the following criteria:

-Easy to get on/off, preferably with one hand.
-Comfortable for dad and baby while dad is sitting.
-Easy for dad to access baby to feed/soothe.

I also loved the moby when my LO was a newborn, but they get hot so I don't know if I'd have loved it as much in the summer. Ring slings are supposed to be awesome for newborns!! I know a lot if ladies who use maya ring slings and love them :)
