I could see asking parents to take a day but a week? That seems like SO much! With 30 kids it would only be once every six weeks. It’s also strange that they’re asking for volunteers - it isn’t mandatory? So what if only 10 parents volunteer, they’re providing all the snacks?

My kids went to a preschool that did this--we provided it approximately once a month, but only for 12 (or 15 in the older class) kids.

I tried to (when possible) do a fruit and a protein/grain. So banana halves and goldfish, or cuties and cheese sticks. But I did drop-off/pick up so that was easier.

This feels like a lot! I think the school should ask for a monetary contribution and manage this, because that's a lot to ask.

I would just go to Costco and buy 5 shelf stable items in bulk. Goldfish, Nature Made bars, animal crackers, etc. Honestly, my life as a working mom is death by 1,000 cuts and that is all I would have the bandwidth to manage. 150 snacks is... overwhelming.

When DD was in preschool we all took turns providing snack but we only did one day at a time. Are the teachers able to do any prep with what you drop off or does it have to be ready to go?

I used to do bananas with pretzels - the teachers would cut each banana in half and give a small cup of pretzels to each kid. Or an apple with a cheese stick/cubes of cheese. Clementine with a granola bar. Muffin with an applesauce pouch. Cut up veggies, crackers, and hummus (teachers would scoop out of a big container into a cup or on a plate). A mild salsa with tortilla chips and cut up veggies (again, teachers would scoop out salsa from a large container).

I can't imagine having to provide a weeks worth for 30 kids! We provide one day a month for 16-18.

My go-to is frozen gogurts. The kids love them frozen, and it means they stay cold till snack time.
Other snacks we've done are cheese sticks and jello cups.

My kindergarteners attend public school in the AM and montessori school in the PM (wrap around style).

Previously they were in a traditional daycare/preschool - so I'm new to this whole montessori thing...

Our Montessori school just announced that they want to return to some pre-Covid habits, like parents providing snack for the class instead of everyone bringing their own snack in their lunch boxes.

So they asked for volunteers to sign up to provide snack for the week.

Have you ever had your child in a school that did this? What do you bring? There are 30 kids in the class and it feels like I would need to bring a boatload of food in. I have always tried to provide my own kids with minimal junkfood and more fruits /grains /proteins so that snack time gave them energy to continue learning. I am not perfect or holier than thou..... but I'm having trouble thinking about what I would send in for a weeks worth of healthy snacks.

The curveball is also that I do not drop them off - they ride the bus here - so I guess I would need to bring at least Monday's snacks in on Friday when I pick up the kids. But the logistics are a whole 'nother animal!

@irene: Agree I'd be frustrated by the policy of not being allowed to pack lunch, then having them serve what seems like a pretty low-protein lunch. That plus the no nut policy makes it tricky.

If you're really struggling, could you just keep doing what you've been doing, and worry about protein at breakfast/afternoon snack/dinner instead?

@irene: i dont think it has to be more difficult. i would just stick with something small and quick. he shouldnt need that much food as a snack. i send either a pouch or a couple crackers with sun butter or a cheese stick. all of those are super quick and simple. these ideas all sound so yummy and healthy, but they sound like lunch to me anyway, and your school might frown on you sending so much food if they have specifically asked you not to send a lunch

as a vegetarian, dairy and eggs are like my main protein sources (along with beans) so the lunches your son is getting aren't that bad to me! but I echo other posters that have mentioned hummus (or you could make/buy a spread with black beans instead) and sun-butter (or soy-butter) too. yogurt pouches/tubes or cheese sticks are also go-to protein snacks for my lo.

Like others already said if I had to do a protein snack I would do hummus and veggies, little meatballs or patties, deviled eggs, mini dumplings, southwest style egg rolls (fill with beans and meat and roll up and bake and serve at room temp), a lot of different kinds of beans either baked or just steamed whole.

@Mrs. Lion: ooo I have to look into the Greek yogurt pouches! Where do u find them- whole foods or target? I have never seen them for some reason. And for sunflower butter I just hope I don't get him in trouble as the teachers probably think it were peanut butter! But I gotta get some.

@avivoca: I guess hard boiled eggs won't stink, I hope? And the potential mess with the yolk scattering everywhere...! I would love to do it but am afraid I'd get DS into trouble :silly: sucks that DS won't eat hummus, or any kind of dips...

It looks like they are doing vegetarian meals which may be more inclusive for other kids. Cheese and eggs in the ricotta, cheese, and French toast have protein so I don't think they are lacking completely. Most states have nutrition requirements for school meals extending even to daycares.

I would do Greek yogurt pouches like someone else said, string cheese or cheese sticks, hard boiled eggs, turkey and cheese roll ups (just find a good quality sliced roast turkey), steamed edamame pods to eat cold, you can freeze smoothies in cups and let them thaw until snack time, roasted chickpeas, cold bean and cheese quesadillas with refried beans, cold potstickers.
