My LO is younger but we were told removing the snot is pretty much just a comfort thing, obviously as long as LO's breathing is OK.

We stopped trying to suck out the snot around a year. It was a huge fight and sneezes seem to do a great job. And she actually learned to blow her nose around then. She's gotten pretty good at it!

I asked my pediatrician the same question recently. He said just run a vaporizer and use saline spray or drops to help the mucous stay moist so his body can work it out. There's just not that much you can do until he can blow his nose on his own (my LO just mastered this at age 3).

As long as his airway is not compromised, it's fine to let his little body deal with the snot and phlegm on its own.

LO (16 months) is sick and very congested. I can hear it in his breathing and especially his coughing! It sounds pretty bad when he coughs! We've been *trying* to use saline drops and the snot sucker/bulb syringe with very little success. He HATES it! It seems like the only way a good amount of snot will come out is if he sneezes. But, is it enough to just allow his body to do the work like that, or do we have to go in by force? Will this clear up on its own? We don't have a humidifier and a steamy hot bathroom does not appear to be working as well! :( I'm fearful that leaving him as is might lead to some sort of infection. The somewhat good thing is that he does not appear too bothered by this congestion and sleeps normally. What is your experience with snot and phlegm?

A warm washcloth, she had a bad cold for almost 3 weeks, and still has a little runny nose. We used two humidifiers, a cool one and warm steam one, also used little remedies saline spray.

I found the best method for the bulb is...
1. saline drops
2. squeeze air out of bulb (away from LO's sight)
3. close one nostril and suction the other
4. squeeze out snot and repeat on other nostril.

i used to not close the nostril and am amazed at how much more i get now and it is a quick sweep!

@pastemoo: We use the Nose Frida instead of the bulb to suck out more snot. We also do saline sprays to help break it up. Other than that, we're constantly wiping her nose.

My DD does the same thing. I'm constantly wiping her down with a saline wipe or warm wet washcloth. Luckily, she doesn't have much hair, so that's not a huge problem.

@banana: Ugh, he always does it before I can get to him. And I am not very good at the suction bulb. Do you have a regular bulb?

My doctor told me to do it with saline (suction) but he hates it soooo much. :( Poor, gross, sticky baby.

How do you keep your sick baby clean?
When my little guy is sick with a runny nose he rubs his eyes and then his nose and then his hair so he is COVERED in snot. I can't give a bath because he does it every few minutes.

Would you use a saline wipe? Regular wipe? Water? Just let it go?
He is also getting baths more often.

I am seriously more grossed out by snot than anything and he is just constantly covering himself if in. (He is 7 months and I guess he recently learned how to rub it all over himself.)
