We didn't buy our Ergo (Ergo Sport) until DD was already a year old. As it is, now I mostly use it with DS, since DD likes to walk, but we still occasionally put her in there at 28 months (25 pounds) and it's still very comfortable.

@Sweet T: I just bought an Ergo and L is almost 8 months old. Like you, I was kicking myself for not buying one earlier - it's so comfortable!!! I wore her on a 3 mile walk the other day and didn't notice any strain on my back or shoulders. I love it, and have used it every single day since I've bought it :)

I didn't have the strength to carry mine past about 15 pounds, which totally broke my heart. My sister and her husband still frequently carry their 18 month old (about 26 pounds) in an ergo. If you have the strength, you can do it until they're huge. If you really go crazy for it they make custom carriers for bigger kids.

Thanks ladies! I'm so excited about it! It's great to see that so many of you are using them at 18+ months.

@Thehistoryofus: I couldn't believe how light DS felt once I had it on!

@erwoo: Thanks for telling me about the amazon price! I really want the spring green one but will probably end up with something else for the cheaper price. We'll see (:

I use my ergo all this time with my 14 month old. I put my friends 2 year old in it and it wasn't heavy at all (in fact I barely noticed the extra weight).

I use my Ergo with my 20 month old. Mostly I use it for him to nap in while I'm at work (I have a bring-your-baby-to-work situation)

I really loves it and will say "ergo" or bring it to me when he's ready to rest.

Definitely not too late. The mom I nanny for has an 18 mos old and she uses her beco daily. She owns a stroller but only for jogging. She loves it especially for travel.

If he is cranky she throws him on her back and he is so happy. It's fail proof to get him to nap as well.

My sister also has a 13 months old and didn't even own a stroller until recently- and it's for jogging as well. She wears him on her back every day and I don't think she plans on stopping

I don't think it's too late. Once your baby's more mobile he won't gain weight as fast as he is now. My son is 3.5 y.o. and he's 32 lbs. He was 30 lbs for an entire year (between 2 and 3 years old) and has been at 32 lbs for 6 months now. And he's a great eater who just takes a long time to eat. :) And, btw, Amazon has the grey performance for $99. That's a really good price! Oh, and I have the performance and LOVE it. I even bought the bag that attaches to the front to hold my wallet and phone and other misc. small things.

I would use it in crowds or on long walks....pretty much any time you might use a stroller too.

I don't have an Ergo, but I have a Boba which is similar (soft sided, front and back carry). DS is 18 months old and 34 pounds and we still use it comfortably. I plan to use it until he outgrows it. Also, Ergos have a good resale value. If you don't think you will have another child, I would consider that. EBay or a site like Diaperswappers, which has a for sale or trade board just for carriers, would both be good options and you should be able to recoup a good portion of your money.

We used our Ergo with DD at 18m during a trip to Disney World and had no problems; found it very comfortable with the front carry or back carry. Will continue to use it with her until she hits the weight limit although now that DS has arrived her carrying time will be more limited since we'll need it for him.

I finally tried using an Ergo tonight and am in love! I'm seriously kicking myself for not buying one when DS was a newborn. The one we tried was the Ergo performance. I was really impressed with how comfortable it was. DS loved it so much more than being in the stroller.

I'm a little worried about buying it this late in the game. DS is 13.5 months old. I'm worried that we won't get enough use out of it to justify the $135 price tag. I think DS weighs around 20lbs and the weight 'limit' is 45lbs for the carrier. Going by that, we should be able to use it for a long time. Also, most public places are crowded here in Hawaii. Baby wearing is much friendlier than stroller use.

Anyone else buy/use an Ergo with an older child? Does it work for you/your child?

Any advice would be fantastic! :)
