I’d ditch the oatmeal and switch to fruit, veg and meat. And if she’s still not ok then she just might not be ready for solids yet.

We never gave oatmeal or cereal at that age. Have you tried fruit and veggie purées instead? Oatmeal has a lot of fiber!

@LadyDi: Once a day, when we eat dinner, and only a couple of tablespoons until she starts turning her head to refuse it. I haven't cut any other feedings.

I do wonder if this is a leap with bad timing - I'll research that. Thanks!

How often and how much oatmeal are you giving? I would just offer once/day after she’s nursed or has a bottle. And just a small amount. Oatmeal is less caloric than breast milk so if she’s eating too much she could be hungry. Of course it could also be a coincidence and just be a growth spurt or leap. If that doesn’t help I would just move on to a puree.

DD is 6 mo. Just started oatmeal (very thinned out with breastmilk).

Sleeps been off ever since - short naps, more wake periods at night (she was averaging 1 before this, sometimes none). Her tummy is gurgling and she seems uncomfortable. Stools are dark and some diarrhea.

Is this normal stuff? Older DD took to solids like a champ, no issues that I remember.I keep thinking it's probably her system adjusting to a new food.

I'm not sure what to do to help her feel better! I've been giving tummy rubs and helping her kick her legs so she's getting things moving. I have offered gas drops a few times. She seems most comfortable when upright.

Should I be avoiding oatmeal and moving on to a puree?

Help a tired mama out!

@JJ2626: so sorry, I meant to reply to this and forgot and now I saw it again and it reminded me.

You know, the only thing I did that made him sleep later was drop to two naps 🤷🏻‍♀️ Then sleeping till 7/7:30 just fell into place.
Looking at your schedule, one easy thing I can think of is maybe to just not go in till 7am. Is she happy when she wakes at 6/6:30 or does she cry for you? If she’s happy I might just leave her till 7 then make a big exciting production at 7am. Sometimes they just wake when they wake because we go get them and they become conditioned to wake at that time.

The other possibility is to reduce wake time between naps. At this age the max they can prob do between 1st and 2nd nap is about 3 hours. But sometimes they can only do 2 hours. I would try to do nap at 1pm and then see how that works for a few days and tweak if necessary. So it would look like this:

7am Bottle (I know our LOs are similar in that they aren’t crazy about bottles, but if yours is ravenous in the AM this might not work. And remember they’ll be dropping bottles in like1-2 months!)
8am Yogurt
8:30am - 10/10:30 Nap
11am Bottle
12pm Lunch
1-3pm Nap
3pm Bottle
4:30pm Dinner
6pm Bottle and bed (even my “meh” bottle drinker will drink his bedtime bottle after eating dinner, it’s the easiest one...and again, bottles will start to go away soon anyway).

That is how mine started to sleep till 7/7:30. I think if you start to structure his naps and feedings where you want them to be, the rest will fall into place.
And I have to say, a 6pm bedtime with 7am wakeup is GLORIOUS. 😂

@natalie403: same as @JJ2626: at 9 months we did mostly purées with some finger foods here and there (mostly me being lazy because, 2nd kid). Now at 10.5 months I’m making an effort to do more finger foods, but if I’m having a bad day or things are rushed I’ll totally do a pouch. Or I’ll do protein finger food (fish or chicken or meatball) and then a pouch of veggies or something.
Today for breakfast was toast with a very thin layer of PB cut into little squares. And blackberries cut into quarters.
Lunch was random - edamame, cantaloupe and a piece of croissant haha.
Tonight for dinner he’ll try salmon and I made rice pilaf last night that he loved so I’ll give that leftover. And probably edamame or peas again.

Good things to start with if you’re still not doing finger foods are peas (frozen ones, steam in bag are great) because they are small and mushy. And easy to pick up since they don’t stick to the highchair. And scrambled eggs (as long as you have no reason to suspect allergy) - also very soft and can be made sort of like an omelette and cut into small cubes).
Shredded cheese.
Blueberries cut into halves or even quarters if you’re nervous.
Of course puffs are good for practicing pincer grasp.
Oh watermelon is good too. A little messy but easy to grab since it’s not slippery and easy to chew without teeth.
Canned beans are great too - same thing, mushy and easy to grab. Very nutritious. Just rinse them in water first.

And there are lots of things you can do that aren’t really super solid but lots of texture (you’d feed on a spoon). Like mild chili or even just ground beef that is seasoned. Rice. Cous cous. Quinoa.

And if you really feel ambitious (I kid, it’s an easy recipe but again, I’m lazy), there is a great recipe I got from HB for quinoa broccoli cheese bites. I make a batch in mini muffin tins and have them in the freezer for a few weeks. Just nuke 1-2 and it’s perfect portion.

@natalie403: We do mostly finger foods now. Eggs, Cheerios, banana, beans, rice, potato, avocado are her faves. And yogurt. But at 9 months she did more purées and then we just kind of noticed she wanted more finger foods.

@LadyDi: Thanks for sharing! It sounds like ours are similiar! This is helpful!! :)

@SweetiePie: This schedule sounds great! I find he takes better naps at home but probably because less noise from the other kids etc. What do you do for solids? Do you do finger foods yet??

@JJ2626: Ok that amount makes me feel better! I couldn't figure out if it wasn't enough (I know they say food before 1 is just for fun but he LOVES food... and isn't as interested in as much bottles) I have his 9m appt tomorrow so I guess I can run it by them too! Do you do purees or finger foods now?

Four 7 ounce bottles sounds normal to me. At our 9 month appt the ped said it’s normal for intake to drop around now. My LO is 10.5 mos but has been on 2 naps since about 9 months. She eats about 20-24 oz of formula per day (has never been a huge eater). Her schedule is:

6:00/6:15am wakeup
— @SweetiePie: any tips to get her to wake up a bit later? Sometimes it’s 6:30 but I can’t figure out what makes it happen!
6:30: 5oz bottle
8am: yogurt
8:45-10:15 nap
10:30: 4-5 oz bottle
11:00: solids
1:30: 3 oz bottle (sometimes)
2-3:15 nap
3:15: 5oz bottle, solids snack
5:30: solids
6:30: 6 oz bottle and right to sleep (asleep by 6:45/7 and sleeps through the night)

ETA: When we started transitioning to 2 naps, we basically gave her 2 naps if she woke from her 2nd nap after 2pm. If she woke before 2pm, we gave her a catnap around 4/4:30. That worked and then eventually her 2nd nap started getting later.

My son is 10.5mo but he only dropped to 2 naps maybe 3 weeks ago? So we’re probably on the same trajectory. He was very late to drop his third nap. He was waking at 5:30-6am for so long but we never got him till 7am. But we still had to put him down for his first nap by 8am LATEST because he was such a mess. And it was this vicious cycle. I knew he was waking early because he was getting too much daytime sleep. But I couldn’t figure out how to get him all the way till 6 or 7pm bedtime when his first two naps ended by 1pm. He finally had a morning he slept till almost 7am so I just went for it.
Right now he does this:
7am wakeup (honestly it’s sometimes 7:30 now which is amazing) and bottle
8am breakfast
9-10:30/11am nap
11am bottle
12pm lunch
1-3pm nap
3pm bottle
4:30/5pm dinner
5:30 bath
6pm bottle and right to bed

So he’s now sleeping 6pm-7am
Napping 8-10:30/11 and 1-3pm

It’s so wonderful and my only regret is not trying to transition to 2 naps sooner!

My son is 10 months but his schedule hasn’t changed much. He dropped to 2 naps around 7 months. Typically, wakes around 7, haha 6-8 oz bottle, breakfast around 8, naps at 930, 6oz bottle when he wakes, lunch around noon, nap around 2, 6 oz bottle when he wakes, dinner around 6, 6 oz bottle before bed between 7:30-8.

Hi mamas!
Just wondering if anyone could share their infants schedule? I think my 9m old is condensing naps down to 2 and it’s affecting his eating schedule and I can’t for the life of me remember how my 3yo was at this age. He does solids 3x day and 7oz bottles. I find when his naps are longer he only takes 4 instead of 5 bottles but seems ok so wondering if I just up to 8oz??
He sleeps from around 7p til 5:30/6:30a and has bottle when he wakes. Then solids around 8:30 followed by nap (anywhere from 1-2 hrs), another bottle then solids around noon time then nap around 1ish for an hour then bottle then dinner around 5:30ush then bottle before bed by 7. He’s up to the stage 3 solids and does puffs well. Just would love to see how other infants schedules are at this stage..

Thanks so much

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I should clarify - they don't throw the food to be annoying/messy...it is more of a lack of control I think. Like they are trying to turn the piece of food around in their hand to get a better angle and it falls out. Or they are inspecting it like the Statue of Liberty and then drop it like they would a toy - but it goes to the floor.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: @Littlebit7: @MrsRoo: Oh we absolutely eat in diapers only as a way of keeping the kiddos clothing clean (their bibs are an absolute disaster so I learned that lesson quick!)

@Littlebit7: That is a good idea about seating them on the floor ontop of a mat. This could certainly take out the mess factor for atleast the wooden chairs! I'll give that a shot in our routine!

@Lady Baltimore: I think it was the third day of solids that I thought for half a second that I wished we had a dog!

@Gingerbebe: Well that's a neat idea for protecting the chairs!

@Foodnerd81: Bowls? What are those? haha - we aren't anywhere close to bowls or utencils yet!

@Babytsmom: That also is a good idea since they can't rip it off! My DD just figured out how to remove her own bib.

@T.H.O.U.: I agree - I only put 1 or two pieces of food on their tray at a time.

Thank you all for your responses - tips - ideas! I feel better knowing I'm not alone and you all survived (hopefully without ant invasions or ruined floors!) I look forward to trying some of these strategies out!

I use the same Fisher Price boosters. They can go in the dishwasher! We have ours strapped onto a chair I don't care about. We only have the back strap on so it's easy to lift up and clean.

Full arm bibs are great. We also just change onsies after every meal. He drools so much anyway it is easier.

I do a mix of spoon feeding and BLW, but it's all table food. If it's really messy I just give him a little to try to pick up and spoon feed him the rest. Or give him the non messy stuff and spoon feed the rest.

@ElbieKay: oh yeah! Those Bjorn bibs for the win!

I hadn't heard about BLW when my oldest kid was in that stage, but I tried it with my younger one. I put everything on a plate and only put 2-3 items at a time, and very small portions. It was more about not wasting than mess (even though I hate mess). Something that was also important to me was to teach my kids to eat properly by keeping food on the plate. Sure, things would end up on the table or floor, but a surprising amount also stayed where it was supposed to.

Yep, it's messy. I can't imagine doing it for every meal with 2 babies and without a dog!

I'd give yourself a little grace. Do what you can to help with the mess (ideas suggested above: no clothes on, the baby bjorn bib, put them right on the floor, some sort of splat mat underneath). And on the days when you don't feel like cleaning up as much mess, do some purees or give them smaller amounts of drier/less messy foods without guilt!

This is why I did not bother with BLW. We spoonfed messy food. We let him play with less messy food. My inner crunchy mama liked the concept of BLW but mama already had her hands full with the rest of her mama job (and her office job).

Eta yes the baby bjorn trough bib was key. Still is, in fact, at almost 3yo. We don't use it all the time, but it's critical to contain things like breakfast cereal.

@MrsRoo: @peaches1038: yes, the bibs with the "trough" help a lot! We use https://www.amazon.com/BabyBj%C3%B6rn-046270us-BABYBJORN-Soft-Bib/dp/B00N9YKXG0

One other tip: I find when I eat with LO he is much more focused on putting food in his mouth and keeping his arms and hands in front of him. Walking around doing "kitchen stuff" inevitably are messier nights.

@lady baltimore: that was my solution with my first cause I don't remember that much of a mess. Dogs love BLW!

I'm considering a splat mat but will probably just swifter every night.

Get a splat mat or two. They are easily wiped down after meals and keep the mess off of your floors. After a few months of trying different silicone bibs, we resorted to putting slightly oversized t-shirts over our LO's shirt during meals. (This is second-best to a naked baby!) We went to Old Navy and bought a few t-shirts on clearance that were 3 sizes too big, but were perfect to put on over our kid's normal shirt. Not perfect (like if he was wearing long-sleeves, etc), but really really helpful in keeping most of the food off of his shirt!

Definitely diapers only for meals and something on the floor to catch spills. I'll also second the bibs that @peaches1038: linked to. They are the best pouch style bibs I've tried. And DD has learned that if her tray is empty she can take food out of the pouch and eat it.

I'm going to have to second the get a dog suggestion. How do you dog-less people do it?? Now LO is older she'll call the dogs over if she spills. I seriously dreaded having her eat somewhere without dogs when she was still so messy!

Oh yeah and I only put a few pieces on her tray at a time. When I put the full serving I run the risk of the whole serving on the floor. We don't use bowls or plates because she's too interested in turning them over.

Definitely a towel on the chair seat if it's upholstery. Otherwise- I never found a good solution and I did blw with both kids. I tried a vinyl tablecloth and I had to clean that instead of the wood floor and it didn't really seem easier. Now my 13 month old only starts dropping food when she is full, but it took a good few months for that. Before it was just curiosity but sill hungry. I can only imagine the mess with twins!
