We have given LO a few "meals" of avocado and sweet potato since 4.5 months or so because our ped recommended we get started, but nothing consistent at this point. We plan to get more serious about it around 6 months.

LO just turned 5 months and I'm planning to start soon, depending on how well she sits up in the coming weeks. Her pediatrician gave us the green light at her 4 month check up but I wanted to wait.

We started at 6 months - although LO was showing all the signs of being ready much earlier than that. Honestly - even though it's fun to watch him try new things - I honestly wish I had waited longer. It didn't help his sleep at all :/ And giving him solid food is actually a bit of work haha! We did BLW, and LO never really liked pureed foods, so now I'm basically shopping for food for 3 people and cooking extra for him. Obviously it would have come to this eventually anyway - but I definitely miss the days of breastfeeding only :)

We just started a week shy of six months. Our ped wanted us to give it a try just prior to her six month appointment so we could discuss how she does with it. LO was DEFINITELY ready. She would always reach for our plates and forks, can sit unassisted and chews on everything that gets in her mouth. She's not particularly impressed with cereal but she looooooved avocado. She gets so excited when she knows we are about to feed her. She sits in her high chair and flaps her arms like a bird and squeals!

Despite her signs of readiness I wasn't willing to start any earlier than we did. I guess I don't really see the motivation to start early as long as LO is gaining weight on milk alone. To me the risk associated with starting early (higher rates of diabetes, obesity, etc) are too great to start early just because baby seems interested in food.

@runsyellowlites: I think i have seen that before and L is a bit under what he should have gained between 4 and 6 months. I calculated his average to be about 2.5 oz per week. I have another appt coming up, so I will see what the doctor says. I am trying to do things to get more milk in him, so hopefully it has an effect.

@PurpleUnicorn: Idk if you've seen this but P has always been in range... On the low side, but still in range so we continued to delay. Idk what or how your lo's weight gain has been though... Still, thought if you hadn't seen it it might be a good reference to keep around (I always cross reference P's gain with it)

we'll be starting around 6.5 months. i really wanted to wait longer but after one ped and now a lactation consultant (that i saw yesterday) telling me to start solids to help him gain more weight, i am not sure what else to do but follow their advice! L is also almost sitting up without support (well he did today for a few moments!) so i am more inclined to start. And as much as i wanted to BLW, i discovered today that DH is not totally comfortable with it, so we may start with a couple of purees first and I guess I will have ease both L and DH into BLW.

@Katrocap: Here's a list of developmental signs of readiness (not including digestive maturity)

- Baby can sit up well without support.
- Baby has lost the tongue-thrust reflex and does not automatically push solids out of his mouth with his tongue.
- Baby is ready and willing to chew.
- Baby is developing a “pincer” grasp, where he picks up food or other objects between thumb and forefinger. Using the fingers and scraping the food into the palm of the hand (palmar grasp) does not substitute for pincer grasp development.
- Baby is eager to participate in mealtime and may try to grab food and put it in his mouth.

Here's some other good info in regards to baby being ready for solids!
http://kellymom.com/nutrition/starting-solids/solids-when/

For those of you whose babies exhibited "signs of readiness", what does that mean? My LO watches as I move a spoon from plate to mouth, but isn't clamoring for the spoon. Just curious, thanks!

@kodybear: haha yes! there was lots of gagging and confusion on what to do with it. but last week she just all of a sudden got interested and knows how to swallow now, and will open her mouth when hold a piece of food out or a spoon of puree. we gave her tastes of food that we were eating and i think thats what made her interested, since purees can be pretty bland and not so tasty.
