@smuckers: Yay! That's so great! One of my favorite things about teaching is to have parents feel like their kids are in the right place and will be supported and happy.

Just giving another update to this.

The new preschool has been amazing. We're not even through the first week, and we know it's the place for us.

I used to spend 100% of the time she was in preschool filled with anxiety about how she was doing and how bad our report was going to be. Every report we got was from an exasperated teacher, who indicated to us that our 3 year old was out of control. Reports were "She doesn't listen, she can't sit still, she isn't ready." I cried a lot during that week and a half, and questioned myself constantly. I had thought she was SO ready to try preschool, and this teacher, who has been a teacher for years, is telling me that I was wrong. I truly do think DD was too busy at school to notice that this teacher didn't like her/had clearly labeled her a problem child, but I worried that she would eventually see that and take it to heart.

Three days in at her new preschool, and she forgot to kiss me goodbye this morning because she was so excited to go to school. Every report we've gotten has been "she's very busy but she's trying so hard and doing so well! She's exactly where we expect a 3 year old to be." They're excited to see her in the morning. Her teacher says she has zero concerns about DD's hearing ("She's just a little too busy to listen sometimes, but that's really normal").

Today at pickup, her teacher told us that she sat still on the mat for circle for the first time, and told us that she had an awesome day. Three days in. I cried happy, grateful tears.

@smuckers: That's great news, I am so happy for you! Nothing better than things working out perfectly!

I know I missed most of the thread, but we did take my 3yo son in for multiple hearing tests (like in a sound booth by himself being told to move blocks) because of his pretty severe speech delay. Yeah, turns out my son has no hearing loss (despite his DH and his sister's genetic hearing loss). He just is SUPER FOCUSED and tunes everything else out, which made the tests take a lot longer haha!

You guys, the most amazing thing just happened.

DH and I had resigned ourselves that preschool wasn't happening this fall. But I just got a random call from a local "public" preschool (it's not really public, but it's state run). I've only ever heard amazing things about this school. It was my #2 on our list, but we don't qualify for the program (we are over income).

So I get this call. And they have opened up 4 total spots to kids who are over income for the part time preschool. And DD has been offered one of those spots. FOR FREE.

The timing could not have been better. Like it feels very, very much like this is what was supposed to happen, this is how it was meant to go. If they had called even a week beforehand, we would have reluctantly said no because we wouldn't have wanted to mess with DD's routine and transition to the other (worse) preschool.

I'm FLOATING. BEST. DAY.

I can't imagine how distracted your mind would be wondering if your daughter was feeling safe, happy and loved while at preschool. Keep us posted please about the hearing. And I really hope you find another preschool option soon.

WELP THAT DIDN'T LAST LONG.

We pulled DD from the preschool today. I dropped her off, and as I left I said "Hope it's a good day!" and the teacher said "let's hope" as the door was closing (DD was already inside with the other kids and didn't hear). I left not feeling good.

When my husband picked her up later he had me on speaker. While he was waiting, he spoke to the assistant preschool teacher, who was just so lovely. Told us that her day today was "a little worse than her better days last week but that it was probably from coming off of the weekend, that's normal." It was just a very nice interaction. Then the teacher came out with our DD and DH asked her how the day was and she just said "Not good. As bad as the first day last week". You know, the one where she called a 3 year old a "tornado of destruction".

Essentially, they said the same thing, but in 2 very very VERY different ways. I talked with my husband on my lunch, and both of us agreed that we have continued to feel unwelcome, and agreed that there is a zero tolerance policy for us on leaving our kid(s) with someone who doesn't want them. DD will not be going back. We may try again in the spring (at a different center) or we may wait until she qualifies for public pre-K.

We're still going to keep that appointment to check her hearing, though, just in case :silly:

Thanks everyone. We're not ready to pull her from the school yet; there are no other schools in the area that accommodate a part time schedule (we're rural), and we're not ready to send her to preschool full time, so pulling her from this school means keeping her home with us. We are not opposed to doing that, but we want to give her a chance to adjust first. If she's not back at circle time by next week, we'll be having a serious discussion with her teacher and potentially pulling her. We're honestly not worried about her learning, we're sending her to preschool for socialization.

@ShootingStar: Interesting about the tonsils! A nurse at an ENT (for recurrent tonsillitis) in college told me I had the largest adenoids she'd ever seen, and my brother's daughter had to get her adenoids removed when she was 5 because they were causing sleep apnea. So it's not outside of the realm of possibility that it could be something like that?

Also could still just be normal 3-year old stuff.

@smuckers: I think the teacher's comments were terrible. I honestly would pull your girl from that school and find another. I agree that you should contact your school district. In my area, at the age of 3, you can get speech services through the district. I will be calling in a few months for the 2.5 year old who also has a speech delay. She got approved through insurance for speech therapy and also I got her approved for county services which should help her at a place closer to my house. Best of luck to you. Its so sad to see our kids struggle in any way.

@peaches1038: Your poor boy at swim! This almost made me cry. you are a great mom. did you have any reason to believe fluid could be in his ears before? like ear infections or anything?

When DS was 4 he failed a regular hearing test. Turns out he had fluid in his ears. We gave it a lot of time to clear up. Actually too much time in my opinion, but that's what happens when I send DH to the doctor without me, lol. Anyways about 1.5 years after his initial failed test DS had tubes put in and his adenoids and tonsils removed. His ENT theorized that his adenoids were blocking the eustachian tube, causing fluid to build up.

After the surgery he was like a different kid. In retrospect, I think he'd been dealing with this since before he was 3, and we had no idea. There was a point in time when he became a cyclone of energy, which can actually be a sign of being overtired. His huge tonsils were apparently making it hard for him to breathe while he slept, and contributing to the hearing issue. After the surgery his energy leveled out a lot.

That was May of last year (2019) and in the 1.5 years since the surgery, we've noticed he randomly gets ear infections with no symptoms and with tubes, the pus starts draining. He wouldn't notice any pain in his ears, he wouldn't have a fever. But all of a sudden one of his ears would just be awful. And I think that must've been happening over the years. He'd have an ear infection go unnoticed and the fluid would get all backed up. After the surgery was performed, the doctor told us both his ears were completely filled.

So anyways, I see a lot of similarities with your daughter. The energy, wondering if they can even hear you.

I have the same reaction as @Littlebit7:. To me that sounds like an incredibly stressed kid who is learning the social mores of classroom life. To deprive her of her education (circle time is where you do the bulk of the learning) is hugely problematic to me. This raises all sorts of red flags and is something I would really think through because it doesn't sound like the supportive environment I'd want for my kids.

But to answer your questions, both my kids have hearing issues. Kiddo #1 has my ears that get clogged easily and sounds get muffled and he doesn't regulate his own volume. I help him by taking hot showers to get the wax to melt and clear.

Kiddo #2 has his dad's ears and repeat ear infections that never presented normally. Tubes were hugely helpful.

I’m sorry this is how your school year started. I’m most concerned about the teachers response on day one. If this is their reactionary solution towards any type of disruption to the normal flow of class, there are so many red flags. This is a class of three year olds. THREE. To basically label your child a problem and exclude her on day one...that is pretty inexcusable. Based on that, do you think they'd treat her any different if she had a diagnosis or delay? I’m reaching here, but my guess is if it’s a private school, they’d find a way to ask you to excuse yourselves. I hope you find answers for your daughter, and I think the school owes you a better solution and plan than staggering your arrival (which basically says, you deal with her, we don’t want to)

@mrsmacSLP: thank you for your input! I’m not sure I said what she does accurately...she TOTALLY has her own thoughts and says things all the time without prompting (we were driving home today, passed a farm, and she started saying “look I see a cow! Moo moo! Old Macdonald!”), but when we ask her a question she’ll answer with the last-ish word we said (“what’s your name?” “Name!” “What’s your name DD?” “Name!”). We’re working on it.

I’m an SLP within the schools and work with preschoolers. Your daughters behavior sounds perfectly within the realm of “normal” for a first day of school for a child who has never had any daycare experience! It’s such a hard transition.

I do worry that you say your daughter primarily parrots others versus has her own thoughts at 3. If you’re up for it, contact your local school district and ask about child find (this is district based in the states). They can evaluate speech and language. It’s a process but free to you.

Her hearing can also be tested with what’s called auditory brain stem response (ABR-what @muffinsmuffins was mentioning regarding the little headphone) which does not rely on a response made by a person and available in most hospitals. Audiologists use ABR on adults claiming hearing loss by their jobs to prevent companies paying.

Best wishes!

@smuckers: we’ve been seeing just a regular ENT, not associated with a children’s hospital and I’m amazed by what they do. I thought my stubborn 3 yo would struggle to cooperate but he did fantastic. I will add though, not all hearing problems have “easy fixes” as we’re learning with DS1s diagnosis.

@muffinsmuffins: That is a "lucky" set of circumstances! DD's speech has been concerning for me since she was 15 months old (I even posted about it here!), so that's definitely something we noticed. We chalked it up to my husband (her main caregiver during the day) not being a talker for a bit. It's getting better, but it's definitely not where other 3 year olds are at.

We're not near any children's hospital (the closest one is 1.5 hours away). I'm not even sure I could picture her playing the game you described (she would just want to do it whenever she wanted to do it). IDK, I'm hopeful that this is something that ends up being something "easily" fixable, but I"m prepared for it to just be a stubbornness issue.

@smuckers: it’s because he was referred to speech at 18 months. He also chipped a tooth at like 20 months and we had to go to the dentist and she noticed he was a mouth breather so also referred to ENT who sent to audiology. Kind of a weird set of circumstances that I’m so thankful for!

They usually have a fun activity for them to do during. Ours was at the children’s hospital so it’s all set up. Like a noise happens and they have to push a car down a ramp when they hear it. They have all kinds of different tests to do that are pretty quick and minimally invasive to the kid.

@pachamama: yeah, that’s the general consensus. There’s a field trip in 2 weeks that’s I’m going on, I’ll be very interested to see how the teacher interacts with the kids. And we’re definitely giving her time to adjust! With no pressure to continue with the program if it’s not working; we’re not afraid to pull her out.

@muffinsmuffins: it’s so interesting to me that you had hearing assessments from 2-3.5! DD hasn’t had any, but I think it’s normal for our state (her doctor is very thorough).

I have no idea how they’re going to do a hearing test with my crazy 3 year old.

@smuckers: he maybe had one as a baby? So no repeat infections whatsoever. He just kept failing the hearing tests and we had to push the ENT so much for surgery because of the lack of ear infections. I remember sitting with him during the hearing tests and he wouldn’t respond to the noises I could hear. He just sat there waiting doing nothing. I thought maybe he didn’t understand the instructions but then they put a special headphone on him that bypassed his canal and he scored perfectly. Finally the audiologist was like no, he needs the surgery and personally contacted the ENT.

It is really so hard to know. But at least you’ll be able to rule something out and focus on the other stuff.

Who calls a 3 year old a tornado of destruction on the FIRST day she has ever been in a structured environment?! The poor girl was probably extraordinarily stressed and acting out. I always give any behavioral issue (sleep, food pickiness, weird moods, hitting) 1-2 weeks before I worry. They almost always adjust or snap out of it.
(Though honestly it does sound like she has some hearing issues which will be good to look into). Good luck mama. Don't stress too much. Some kids output their stress in new situations differently.

@muffinsmuffins: did he have ear infections? DD hasn’t had any ear infections at all that we know about, but definitely feel you on outbursts and tantrums. We just assume that it’s standard 3-year-old stuff (which it very well may be!).

I agree that the teachers comments would not sit well with me on the first day. I’m really sorry that happened to you. I would be distraught. It’s so hard if there’s issues at daycare because you aren’t there! Like what am I supposed to do if my kid behaves totally different there?! It’s up to them to figure it out. It’s literally their job?!?!

Another kid with conductive hearing loss over here! My older who is now 6, failed 4 hearing tests from 2 yrs to 3.5 and we had an epic journey with speech, a diagnosis of apraxia, and finally fighting with an ENT for tube surgery that changed our lives. Same as above: we had NO idea. He had constant fluid in his ears until he had the surgery at just under 4 years old a month before he started JK. Everyone we knew including daycare and our SLP was absolutely shocked after he had the surgery. He has been awesome since. This past year his teachers and us started noticing him him asking what? A lot. Had the testing done again and he’s back to where he was pre surgery as the tubes fell out on their own. We may be getting another set this fall.
Before tubes he was congested a lot, tons of outbursts and tantrums and frustration. After he was like a brand new kid and he’s totally caught up to his peers in a very fast amount of time.

@BadgerMom: nope, not a Covid thing. It’s a small center that has limited staff, so I do think part of it is having to dedicate a staff member to my DD puts strain on “the plan”. And she does practice circle time, just at the later circle.

She’s an older teacher and is very “old school”. If the problem persists after a hearing check comes back normally, we have no problem removing her from the center (my DH is on board with that possibility as well). We both just want her to try, I think because we’re nervous that maybe we’ve been too permissive with her. As I said, she’s very strong-willed, so every day is a field of which battles to pick. 🤪
