@ms.line: I see you posted on the IF thread so I will respond more there (and introduce myself as well, plus updates), but your RE appointment sounds super frustrating! Second opinion for sure. Hang in there!

@Amorini: That's so sweet, thank you! Unfortunately, I didn't find our appointment especially helpful. Our RE confirmed that my SO's numbers are low across the board, but said it's still "possible" for him to father children. She said we haven't been trying long enough and she wouldn't be willing to talk about interventions until a year(!!) has passed. She referred us to a urologist and wants me to come in for my labs and a sonohysterogram next cycle, so I suppose we'll reassess at that point. (I'm a control freak, so this process has been pretty emotionally taxing for me!)

Good luck with your HSG this week! :goodluck: I think it's great you joined the May POAS board - your positivity inspires me!

Timed intercourse while on vacation...which was not quite as awesome as it sounds because I was altitude sick.

We didn't persue IUI, though often we were doing home insemination due to schedule incompatibilities.

I got pregnant naturally after 8 cycles of well timed intercourse and/or inseminations. My partner's count and motility were both at the low end of normal, but overall semen volume was abnormally low (<1ml) and normal morphology was only 2%.

I didn't really get the opportunity to freak out about the results though. Sweetie was given the verbal report that the results were "on the low end of normal, but normal and fine" and didn't receive the detailed results until after I'd already gotten a :bfp: .

I do worry a little bit about next time (if we decide we'd like a #2). I have endo, and being off cycle suppression to TTC can be life-disruptingly painful. It will be tough for me to go into TTC again knowing that it is quite likely to take longer than average.

@ms.line: Yes, let's definitely keep an eye out for each other.

I would hope that given your age and health that other options like IUI would be on the table since you aren't falling off the maternal age cliff soon like me. And, like Mrsads said and others have said, these numbers can go up and down, so another SA would shed more light on what those options might be. Also with the time on your side, you could take time to explore and ease your way into things.

Our RE was cautioning us to not be too optimistic with the second SA  but I am hopeful that there is a significant jump (and super stats on my end) so that we can at least talk IUI. Hope springs eternal... I am even going to join the May POAS thread because maybe a miracle will happen after the HSG. Hope springs eternal.

@mrsads: Congratulations on your pregnancy and your incredible story! I love how success stories like yours remind us that miracles truly happen all the time. :goodluck:

DH had several SA's - some were AWFUL - low counts, low morphology, I don't even remember all the different measurements, and then he had one that was low but not quite as bad. So maybe they should do a repeat SA at a different time?

I am younger (28) and I also had some issues - low progesterone and not ovulating well on my own. Our RE suggested we at least try IUI first (with Clomid for me for my issues), since maybe the "sperm wash" (or whatever they do for IUIs) might help (it only takes one swimmer, after all).

Anyway, we tried it and our first IUI worked!! I'm 22 weeks pregnant. I just wanted to give you a success story to lift your spirits.

And the sample that my DH gave on the day of the IUI was so bad that the RE STRONGLY advised us to do a repeat IUI the following day to see if we could get a better sample. We paid everything out of pocket (zero insurance coverage for infertility), so the extra IUI would have been like another $300. We declined and thought we'd just try again the next cycle. But it worked!

@Amorini: Thanks so much for replying. I'm so sorry to hear about your DH's SA, but at least we know we're not alone. I'm feeling very ambivalent about IVF/ICSI... I'm only 29 but my husband is 41, so we're pretty anxious to start our family, and IVF seems to be the fastest and most direct solution to getting pregnant. Of course, it's also super expensive, which is a deterrent.

I think my husband is still processing, too... I keep spontaneously bursting into tears, which probably isn't making him feel any better. :bummed: Wishing you luck with all your blood tests and HSG - I haven't done any of that yet, but I'm sure it will be coming up soon. I think it's great that you have a clear direction! Wishing you all the best - I'd love to stay in touch! :goodluck:

@ms.line: This is my first post ever... It was time to stop lurking now that we have a clearer idea of what we are facing. Unfortunately the news is similar to yours, so I'll start here: DH has low numbers all across the board. Totally sucks.

So... sending solidarity  .... and also a little bit of what we have learned so far after our first RE appointment this week. Our RE said "IVF with UCSI" was our best option and she recommended an aggressive course of action due to my age (39). I was surprised -- and then again, not so surprised -- that she pulled out the big guns from the start, but I also like approaching this in the way that gives us the best chances of success. Perhaps other options are explored when maternal age is not so much an issue, however I have read that IUI or IVF without UCSI (is it called 'normal IVF?' total newbie here) can be done for moderately low numbers, and not very/extremely low as in our case. DH will repeat the SA (two weeks after the first) to confirm what his 'normal' is. So far:

Volume: don't remember / enough
Count: 5 million
Motility: 30-ish%
Morphology: 2-ish%

*I'm a numbers person, but it is hard to be getting the most devastating news and stay on top of details at the same time.

On the surface, things seem pretty normal on my end. I'm super regular, etc. though I know others on here have started this process with the same assumption. The RE did a transvaginal ultrasound, found a good amount of follicles and no cysts or fibroids - said everything looked good, but we need more info. I will be doing my Day 3 and other labs plus HSG next week. Fingers crossed on that! No (more) whammies!

It totally sucks to be here and my DH is "sad" and "still processing." I am sad and also "why, oh why?" But we know what we want and we are just going to dive right in. I'm really interested to learn what you find out next week! Please know that I am here, sending best wishes, support and encouragement.

My husband just got his SA results back this afternoon. He had a sperm concentration of 8.4 million/ml with 3% morphology (WHO). We don't have an appointment with my RE until Monday, and I'm really distraught. :crying: Just wondering what paths other bees took after getting their MFI diagnosis and looking for solidarity.
