thanks everyone! just wanted to report back and say i had a klean kanteen sippy on order that arrive over the weekend. i tried it out wiht my LO (6mo) and surprisingly LO was able to use it. i tried it out too w and w/o the valve and was surprised to see the valve didn’t require too much work to get the water out.. so im keeping it for now but probably will try to switchto a regular top ASAP. Definitely gonna try to teach LO to drink out of a shot glass so we can use regular cups/tops soon!

@hellobear: try a shot glass of water. My kids were able to manage open cups way earlier than you might think and shot glasses work perfectly. For out and about you will want a water bottle, but I prefer getting to open cups ASAP at the table

@hellobear: we tried the Klean soppy cup but found that with the spout in you have to suck really hard and without it my kids were constantly choking themselves with the flow. Neither of my kids ever seemed to get the hand of traditional sippy tops because you have to suck so hard- but maybe that’s because we’d already tried straws?

@hellobear: we started the 360 cup at 6 months. We never did a spouted sippy cup. We moved to a kleen kanteen with a sports cap around 10/11months when out of the house and to an open cup at home (we used a shot glass actually when we first started). Now at 2.75, he drinks out of our normal glasses and refuses a “kids cup” with a top and straw at restaurants and at friends houses he won’t drink out of a kids plastic cup. He only wants a glass cup hahah. We still use the kleen kanteen as well

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: how old was your little when you switched to the straw on the pura? i think i’m leaning towards starting with straw over sippy since my little doesn’t even really know how to use a bottle (he hates bottles actually).. so figure he won’t need as much of a transition

also the sippy on the klean kanteen - do u think this kind of sippy is usable by an infant? my LO has rejected bottles and is EBF so these cups are an ordeal.. i’ve been spoon feeding him water when he needs it. :meh:

Unfortunately, there's no particular pattern to which type of o-ring we've gotten. We got some of each on the ones we ordered years ago...and some of each on the ones we got earlier this year. We started using them at 8-9 mos and transitioned from bottles to straw completely by 11 mos.

We use the ThinkBaby straw cups (mostly the plastic, though we do also have the stainless). We've ended up with two different styles of o-ring sealing the top. One version (the good one) has a little tab that makes it easy to remove and clean. The other style is almost impossible to get out and invariably gets moldy in the seam. But, they don't leak, and they hold up very very well.

When we started using a water bottle around six months, we used a Pura with the silicone straw. LO eventually chewed through the straws, but this worked well for several months, and we used a second bottle to transition away from nipple bottles for breastmilk without any hiccups. One of the bottles did end up becoming convex on the bottom after being dropped one too many times, which was annoying, but the other is still in our rotation at 2.5 years, with their sport cap on it.

After LO turned one year and chewed through the Pur straws, we tried a Thermos sippy for a while, but I didn't love it (leaky, and too many pieces). We do love the Klean Kanteen. LO can use both the sippy and sport tops (prefer the sport as I can toss it in my bag and it doesn't leak), and I like that we can keep the same bottles and just change out the tops as she grows. Nice wide mouth and easy to clean.

We used Pura with the sippy spout. It was easy to clean. We didn’t use it very long because LO actually had an easier time with a straw. I think we may have tried giving it to him 10-12 times and it was more so of introducing an alternative to a bottle.

We had great success with the Munchkin brand of straw sippy cups and 360 Miracle cups, Camel straw was fine too until they became yucky, and now LO is pretty much a water bottle kid and we use Nuk that has a 360 lid.

we always used the thermos foogo straw cups. you do need a small brush to clean out the straw part, but they were generally fine. i only use them for water, and serve milk in an open cup at meals only. sometimes we used the munchkin 360 for milk at meals if I didn't feel like helping/being cautious with the open cup- but we used the plastic ones for that.

once they are old enough (and ASAP) I switch them to a klean kanteen water bottle with the regular spout. easy to clean!

I believe think baby makes a stainless version of their straw cup.

Eta: sorry I missed that on your list. We
Like our think baby but my daughter would chew the straws and leave tiny holes which would make them leak. However I generally liked them (although our cup of choice is munchkin weighted straw but it’s not stainless)
I just taught my 7 month old to drink out of a straw yesterday. It’s so fun to see them pick up a skill

We've used the Thermos Funtainer bottles (they have straws) for DS since he was about a year old so he could learn to drink water out of it. They are pretty easy to clean IMO (do need a small straw brush). Only con might be that it might be hard for small baby hands to hold it since there's no side handles.

Hi!

Any recommendations for non-plastic straw/sippy cups? Ive been looking at a few stainless steel versions (klean kanteen sippy, pur, think baby) but wanted to get some feedback on pros/cons of any from those who have used them before! I ideally want a straw (would rather skip sippy spout all together if possible) but don’t see that many options out there. Some issues im concerned with are: easy assembly/cleaning and ease of use for younger children (thinking like 6+months infant starting vs toddler in the 12+months).

thanks in advance!
