Pretty much since DS could walk well (14ish months?) we would let him walk around in places like the grocery store. However, we have always talked about no touching and staying close to us, so if he doesn't, he goes back in the stroller. It has worked for us. DS understood (and obeyed) the no touching concept from very early, like 1 year.

We let our son walk, but we don't let him roam around wildly. It's not fair to the employees or the owner of the store...believe me he's had his fair share of moments and I've gotten glares! He knows he has to walk in the middle of the aisle and if he doesn't, he has to sit in the seat. We also let him choose, hold our hand or sit in the seat.

Grocery shopping is a three person event in our house though.

We are relatively free range parents. So he's been walking for a while. Sometimes (if the store isn't too busy) we just let him run around like a wild man and follow him. He's 2 now. We did buy a thing from amazon http://www.amazon.com/Hold-On-Handles-Single-Handle-Spider/dp/B00466H22I/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1377014007&sr=8-3&keywords=stroller+handle and it attaches to the cart. He will hold that sometimes which at least keeps him close.

Yep! My dd bee lines straight for every ball or object that resembles a ball, and usually I'll just let her hold one. Sometimes we do give in and buy one if they are cheap, but most times inlet her hold it knowing I'm going to make her put it back. She's still the sweet age that I can say " say bye bye to the ball" and she will put it back and blow it kisses, but I know this won't last forever!

I don't have a kid old enough to play with toys, but I don't see any reason to be feeling guilty about it. They make the boxes open to try out for a reason, and just because you didn't buy it today, if there was something he really loved, there's no reason you couldn't just file it away in your mind to buy later for birthday/christmas or something.

I thought it would be great when DS learned how to walk, and at times, I would let him walk by himself when we go shopping, letting him explore, but man, he gets so involved in different things, and attempts to pull stuff off shelves, so it's actually easier to keep him in the stroller or shopping cart! When will he learn not to touch everything??!! On one hand, I want to let him walk, on the other hand, it's a pain in the butt when he does! LOL

So we were at Target, and I let LO (13 months) roam and play with the toys he could reach. He was more interested in pushing his stroller around, but he did press a few toys here and there and played with the popper push toy. I didn't intend to buy anything, so.....felt kinda guilty! Does anyone else do this?

@Chillybear: I vote for picking one brand and sticking with it and I think it is a great idea to see it in person. We have successfully used our 4.0s at daycare since LO started at 5 months and it has been easy for them to adjust to.

My LO is long and skinny so it did take until 11-12 weeks for her to fit into the BGs, but it depends on your LO's body type. We were fine with disposables until then.

Good luck!

I have some 4.0s and Freetimes and I don't love them. They fit really wide in the crotch for my LO so I prefer the trimmer fit of the BG Elementals (originals and the new ones)and Thirsties AIOs. I do like using the 4.0s as a night diaper.

@MamaCate: I'm leaning towards what you suggested and just doing research and deciding on one brand, which is why i so desperately want to see a bunch of different brands in person. I'm hoping to register for the diapers and use disposables during the newborn stage until she/he fits into the full size diapers. Baby will be starting daycare by about 10-12 weeks and i dont want to make it difficult for them by having them learn 3 different systems.

@Chillybear: I just wanted to share that we have been doing cloth for a year with a stash of exclusively BG 4.0s and have been very happy. I know several people have advised you to get a variety, but that seemed overwhelming to me to keep track so we just made a choice and didn't look back.

The newborn inserts were great at the beginning and then we transitioned to the larger inserts when she needed more absorbency and she went up a size. We do use disposables at night because it is easier, and DH and I both WOHM FT. If I was home, I would probably try harder to get cloth to work at night...

The 4.0s dry really fast--we hang everything up on the line in the morning and bring them in when we get home from work. We spray them out with a diaper sprayer and that has worked well. Stuffing them is easy.

I have no experience with the freetimes so I can't compare but I just wanted to share that they have served us well so far!

@Mrs. Chalk: @Chillybear: I was going to suggest that place, too. We took the cloth diaper workshop and it was GREAT. My sister even drive up from Baltimore to take it cuz I couldn't so raving about it! Hubs was skeptical about CD'ing until we took the class. Now he's fully on board. We're going with the Free time cuz it's an AIO - closest thing to a sposie = easy for grandparents and daycare!

I have elemental, freetimes, and 4.0s. I've only used them for 2 months so can't speak to longevity but the elementals take forever to dry. I don't mind stuffing and I like how fast 4.0s inserts dry and that I can replace the inserts if I need to!

It is so individual, I despise all my bumgenius stuff and have now sold it all. The fit was horrendous! I puffy heart my fuzzibunz, because my baby had scrawny legs and they are the only mass-produced diapers that get a good fit on him. Quite a few WAHM diapers fit well, but that is a whole other can of worms!

The 4.0's are a pocket diaper. They don't take longer to dry because the inserts dry seperately - they aren't attached to the diaper. But you do have to stuff/unstuff them.

The Freetime's are an AIO diaper. The "inserts" are sewn in, but they hang free for faster drying than other AIO's. No stuffing required.

The Elemental's are an organic AIO. Also no stuffing required.

You can see the 4.0's at Buy Buy Baby. I don't know about the other ones though, I've never seen them in store.

@zippylef: Right? They aggravated me to no end. I hated fiddling with the leg thingies. Plus they leaked. Every time. Ugh, I am having Fuzzibunz flashbacks.
