We just went through this, getting her to take a bottle. She started out with Avent, at two weeks. We just did it every once in awhile. Then started to try one every night and she wouldn't take it. Tried Dr Browns, Drop Ins, Nuks, and Tommee. Had the best luck with Tommee. I think that it is the most like my boob, so it works the best. My advice is buy one of each bottle, that way you don't have to spend as much, nor have them all in your house.

She would take it some nights and some night would scream till she got the boob. After not taking it at a trial run for day care last week, we had a bottle boot camp over the weekend. The hours that she would be in day care, she got a bottle. The first one each day she fought us, but she gave in after awhile. Day care had no issues with her yesterday.

I have noticed she likes it better when really hot. Maybe try the same time each day, so she expects a bottle and not the breast.

Ugh, that's so frustrating! I hope you're able to resolve it soon!

My mom told me that when I was a baby, I refused to take a bottle from my Dad because I only wanted to nurse. My Mom was out of town alone one weekend, so they HAD to get me to eat. My Dad put the nipple cream my mom used on the nipple of the bottle, and apparently I took it like magic!

So after much heartache related to breastfeeding, at 7 weeks, LO has been on a roll and has been eating from the boob pretty well.

Now as of the past few days, she's decided to go on a bottle strike! We've been feeding her with a bottle from the beginning to supplement, and never had any problems.

Now it's hysterics and screaming when dad tries to feed her. He usu. takes 2 shifts to give me a break, plus her grandparents sometimes feed her as well.

I saw a post from Mrs. Bee with some useful tips. These are the things we're going to try:
- try formula
- try the milk hot
- try freshly expressed milk
- try lots of difft bottles/nipple types & flows
- have someone other than mom/dad feed LO
- feed LO outside to distract her

We've been trying Dr Brown's bottles, Medela, Playtex Vent Aire, plus a sample Similac bottle we got. We're mixing up

DH had a little luck finally this AM by putting his pinky in her mouth to let her suck, then doing a switcheroo with the bottle, after an hour-long struggle. It's his first day back at work, and it was sad that he had to deal with that before he went in.

I'm about to order $60 worth of bottles/nipples from Amazon. Sigh...

@LivsMama: So sorry. One thing I heard that may help is lots of skin to skin contact throughout the day. Maybe this would help if it was because she was around other people. Best of luck!

@LivsMama: I bet that's it then. I'm on baby center and so many of the posts at 5 months were about baby unable to focus on boob. I think they just all of sudden realize what an exciting world is around them. It gets better though, it's a new stage from the more complacent newborn, and now they have to get their silly's and exploring out sometimes. She's my happy boobie monger again (unless it's time to practice walking).

@Maysprout: she freaking LOVES spoons, so we could try that. It would take forever though lol. maybe if this keeps up we'll try that. She is definitely WAY into everything going on around her lately. If there is anything to look at, her head swivels a full 180 to see what it is lol. I swear I can see the wheels turning up in her little head.

@livsmama: I totally get why you'd be upset. Especially since a huge part of nursing is not just the nourishment, but the comfort both mom and baby get from that. It's so frustrating when a normally quiet, soothing activity becomes a battle.

My LO got really distractable around that age but she was one that never liked the bottle. So she was fussy for nursing and poo poo'd the bottle. (This wasn't for long but even a day or two is annoying of having baby fussy about eating).

So I ended up just putting some pumped milk on a spoon and she freaking went ballistic, she loved it. We also started letting her taste solids around that time. It wasn't anything major but if I had a banana I'd just smush it between my finger tips and let her tentatively try a bit. My husband took over feeding her from a spoon once a day of pumped milk just because she seemed to love spoons so much. If she started fussing at the breast I stopped nursing and tried holding her hands and letting her walk around or do something active. And then a little later we'd try nursing again. She's 6 1/2 months now and gets maybe one ounce of solids a day so still mostly breastfeeding and hasn't done that fussing for like a month. I just chalked it up to her being curious about life and being distractable.

@Mrs. Yoyo: Well she is drooling a lot and chewing on everything and waking up screaming in pain occasionally, to it seems that teething COULD be the issue. But she wont even try, so its not like she latches on and lets go. I dont know. Im REALLY hoping its just a strike and she goes back to normal soon. I have read those links, They say it lasts about 4 days, so Ill give it till then

@venice4504: awe thanks! Some people just dont get why Im upset. Like the comment "who cares? just pump and bottle feed, shes still getting the milk" or "so give her formula" to "shes probably too hungry for just milk now, give her solids!" I want to punch these people...and those are from family lol (all family who did not BF by the way.) Appreciate the hugs though!

Im just not ready to be done yet. Sounds stupid, I know, and its not all about me. I just love it

How is teething going? Baby Y just cut his first two had has been pretty fussy while nursing over the past week. He didn't refuse completely, but sometimes would latch, fuss, pop off, repeat. I read somewhere that the sucking can aggravate their gums.

I'm guessing you've seen these:

@LivsMama: My son had zero other symptoms with his first ear infection. He would latch and they just cry and cry popping on and off repeatedly. No fever, no rubbing of his face or ears, no ear drainage, etc. However, if Liv had ear pain last month then you are right, maybe not the same. The only thing I can think of is what kellymom has on the topic. http://www.kellymom.com/bf/concerns/baby/back-to-breast.html

@pelikila: I dont think so bc there are ZERO other symptoms. Even when she was having ear pain last month, she would nurse sitting up on my knee or while laying down next to me in bed. Now as soon as she even sees it she pushes it away =o(

@venice4504 - the bottles are awesome, but the flow on the L1 nipples is still pretty slow. She seems to get frustrated that she has to wait for a letdown with me, so maybe thats why. I pump every 2 hours at work as it is, its just that she would nurse in the mornings, at night, and all day friday-sunday (when we're home with her) and now shes not. Id still pump for her, but its killing me.

Do you think she's preferring the flow of the nipples? I mean, those bottles are awesome :)

Don't let it kill you! Pumping is still seeming like an option at this particular point. But I would agree that maybe she's not feeling well. I would think though that if she was overstimulated by the amount of people around this weekend she'd nurse for comfort??

Does she perhaps have something else going on like maybe an ear infection? I only ask because when my son started getting them it was very painful for him to lay on his side so nursing was pretty much a no-go. It took me awhile to realize that was the issue though so that is why I ask.

Liv is going to be 5 months old this week and is EBF. On Saturday, she suddenly just decided to stop nursing, even for comfort and even when shes super sleepy. She gets mad and pushes me away and screams. The only thing that seems to work is at bedtime, bottle feeding her pumped milk in a nursing position then quickly taking the bottle out and having her latch on, but she will only do that if shes super sleepy and some of the times, she realizes what happened and gets mad. She has done this when she had ear pain from teething, but even then she WANTED to nurse, it just hurt her.

I doubt she is weaning herself as it is sudden and not gradual, but its emotionally killing me... We did have a lot of visitors this weekend, maybe thats it? I dont know. It could also be her preferring the flow of the bottle (shes on Tommee Tippee, still infant nipples to keep the flow slow.) Any suggestions though? I
