Yup, our nearly 3 year old does this when she can't find the right word or is really excited. I always ask her to slow down and use all of her words. It feels completely normal for someone that's still building her vocabulary.

My son is also verbally advanced and just went through this a few months ago. It was also when he was really excited or I could see he was thinking about an idea and not quite sure how to get it all out at once. It lasted maybe 2-3 months and I haven't noticed it lately at all.

My DD is 2 and super verbal and occasionally stutters, too. It's always at the beginning of sentences when she's excited and trying to get lots of thoughts verbalized quickly. Our ped said it's normal and not to worry about it since she's not frustrated when she stutters, since she doesn't stutter mid-word or mid-sentence, and since her speech is great otherwise.

My friend's LO went through a stuttering phase around that age and it stopped a couple of months later! She is now 5.5 and speaks very well!

@luckypenny: My DD was super verbal early on and went through a stuttering phase too. I think hers lasted a good month and she just stopped one day.

When she stuttered, we would tell her to speak slowly, or we would say what she was trying to say slowly and tell her to repeat what we were saying.

I've recently noticed my 2 year old stuttering. It happens with certain words more than other and sometimes it seems like she has so much to say, or is so excited she can't seem to get it all out. She is extremely verbal - most people ask if she is 3 or 4 because of it (I also think her height contributes to that) so I don't know if that makes a difference.

Is this a totally normal toddler thing or something I should ask my ped about? It's hard to tell because her other friends don't speak a lot so I don't have much to compare it to!
