I've traveled when my LOs were anywhere from 4-13 months old (and still nursing) and what I found is that the earlier travel times my supply seemed to take a bigger hit proportionally, but was easily recovered. Toward the end any hit I took seemed to be how it was going to be for the rest of the time. My guess is when breastmilk was still my LOs primary food source, they'd keep sucking if they were hungry and stimulate my body back to do what it needed. When it wasn't their only or primary source maybe they didn't do that?

@nanilani: I didn't notice her needing to nurse any more often than she normally does, and she was 10 weeks at the time (only 14 weeks now). I stay very hydrated anyway regardless of temperature, but you're right, you would *need* to in order to have enough milk. Yes, I've heard the same thing about infants being worse at regulating temperature. But, like I said, she has usually been the coolest out of all of us - shade + fan + mist/water was a potent combo! Humidity, though, intimidates me. When we went to DW, I was annoyed by it everyday, and that was without kids.

@DesertDreams88: That’s good to know, thanks! My husband is more stressed over the prospect of bringing the baby than I am, although the possibility of dehydration worries me too. I know I’d have to nurse a lot and drink a ton of water myself. And don’t small babies have a harder time controlling their own body temps? I forgot where I read that though so maybe I’m mistaken.

It’d be FL in August, so most likely 90s+ and so humid it rains every day to get it out of its system.

@Iced Tea: Thanks for the tip! I’ll keep it in mind if we decide to leave baby behind.

I think I’d be far less stressed about my supply if he were as old as your LO during our trip. It’s the fact that he’ll be so little that gets me. I’m not sure if I’m worrying for a real reason or blowing it out of proportion though!

I'm wondering what specifically would be the heat and the humidity?

I live in Phoenix and LO has been fine until now. Most days temps have been in the high 80s, low 90s.

Temps in the 80s: I wear her in the Ergo a lot and she's fine.
Temps in the 90s: Keeping her in the stroller with the sun shade, and/or in shaded areas, sometimes with a stroller fan has worked.
Temps in the 100s: try to avoid the midday heat 11am-3pm. Otherwise, same system as above, while also adding in a misting fan, cooling bandanas, and/or wet bandanas.

She was outside with us all day on a 100 degree day and she was the coolest out of all of us, I was so happily surprised (we were ready to go home at a moment's notice if I thought it was too much.)

We have low humidity though.

I’m certainly no expert. I did just travel without my 11 month old for four days and had a hell of a time with clogged ducts while I was gone. However, I’m not at all used to pumping more than once a day, so that’s probably the main factor there. Once I found some lecithin and applied an electric toothbrush, I finally relieved the clogs. I think next time I’d pack some lecithin to have on hand because I had to check multiple pharmacies and suffer before I found some.

Please share your experiences, good or bad, with maintaining supply while travelling without your EBF infant!

Our family has the opportunity to go on a trip this August and we’re on the fence whether to bring our then 3 month old. It’d be a largely outdoor trip and we have concerns over how he’d handle the heat and humidity. The trip can be cancelled, but not postponed due to financial/logistical reasons. I’ll have enough of a freezer stash to leave the baby with a relative for the four days, but I’m worried that my supply could take a permanent hit while he is so young. I didn’t leave his brother for that long until he was nearly a year old. I’m also trying to come to terms with possibly needing to pump and dump while away unless I figure out a way to travel with unfrozen milk

Is she waking up more at night? Is she still gaining weight? I think those things would be indicators that she wasn't getting enough. I naturally saw a decrease in supply/intake once my kids started solids. For a short while I had to add a pump session in the evening. to get enough oz for the next day. But dropped it when I started getting half finished bottles back from daycare. You can also try upping her solids intake. We were up to 3 meals a day by 7.5 months.

@SteelerGirl: It didn't make a huge difference but I remember I got 1-2 extra ounces, which was just enough. My LO always ate 3 4oz bottles at daycare and I remember in those days sometimes I would only get 10-11 oz in my 3 pump sessions, so the hospital grade pump was enough to get me to 12 most days. I think I rented it from months 8 to 12. I also just liked the hospital grade one better so that might have helped too (I found it more comfortable to pump with that than my PISA).

@rybmama: I hope not!

@catlady: She pretty much drinks as much as we give her. She was at 6 oz bottles but we had to cut back to 5 oz because I'm not pumping enough. I'm worried that taking away that extra oz is leaving her hungry! Did the hospital grade pump really make a big difference? Maybe it's worth the rental fee.

My supply dropped right around that time. I think it's pretty common. My DD wasn't actually eating much at all, so it was a problem for me, although it may not be for you. In my case, I had to add a pumping session at night at home for awhile, but eventually I just rented a hospital grade pump for work and that was good enough so that I was able to drop the night pump. Is your baby still drinking as much milk as before? That's a pretty good way of telling if she still needs as much as before.

She otherwise has been breastfeeding the same at night. The side effects are kind of throwing me for a loop, so it may just be the fact that I feel really off. I'm hoping things will regulate (both with supply and side effects) within 2-3 weeks.

I'm experiencing all kinds of side effects right now and the dr. says it takes a few weeks for your body to acclimate to the medication, so maybe supply will get back to normal in that time. Thanks!

I started taking Zoloft a week ago (last Tuesday) for late onset PPD. My daughter is 8.5 months old. I immediately noticed that my supply tanked. I used to pump about 3.5-4.5 oz each pump session, and for the last week it's been no more than 3 oz each time. I also noticed that my DD is kind of frustrated while breastfeeding and I've had to feed from both sides whereas I normally feed from just one side. I started taking Fenugreek and drinking tons of water to get my supply back up and finally today I just pumped 4 oz, so hopefully things are moving in the right direction.

Curious, has anyone else experienced this with Zoloft?

When did your milk supply regulate? Did it change all at once or gradually?

My pumping output dropped suddenly a week ago. I've been pumping since Day 1 (DS spent a week in the NICU after birth) and have always had fairly consistent outputs. I typically pump 3x a day while at work, pump for any other missed feedings when DS takes a bottle, and otherwise EBF. Since I started back at work in mid-Dec, I was pumping 450-700mL/day (about 15-23oz). Last week it suddenly dropped to 300-400mL/day (about 10-13.5oz).

I can't figure out whether this is a normal supply regulation or due to a combination of outside influences:
-DS started STTN more consistently (went from waking maybe once to not at all)
-I changed my diet slightly by cutting out most junk food. So I'm eating "better" and still eating often, but my overall calorie intake probably dropped.
-DS is getting over RSV. He started coughing the day before I noticed a change in supply, but was not very sick until several days later. At that time he had a very low appetite, but I was pumping a lot more to try to make up for it. His appetite seems to be back now.
-As of today, I seem to be catching a cold, probably from DS :(

Also, DS is 13 weeks and has always been <1% percentile for weight (I had to be induced early). At his sick baby ped visit, he had only gained 3 oz in 2 weeks (he was sick for a few days at that point, so let's say 3oz in 10 days). I'm always concerned he might not be getting what he needs to maintain weight gain.

Should I worry? Taking fenugreek and increasing the number of times I pump each day has not had any positive effect. I know EBF is the best way to create the optimal supply, but I obviously can't do that while working full-time. I would prefer not to call up the LC again because I had a bad experience with her attitude when DS was younger.
