@Kaohinani: Good thought! I had the best intentions of trying that this weekend and caved. The little guy was so tired that when he zonked out on me, I just didn't have the heart to move him. We haven't tried bedtime yet, so we could do that. It's hard when he's at home and I want him to get as much sleep as he can. I guess we need to suck it up though...

@foodiebee: Can you try the transition method at home (home napping and bedtime) so he is more comfortable "arms out" at his care center? Just a suggestion.

@Kaohinani: @Jess1483: @SteelerGirl: Sadly, his arms have to be completely free, so even the Zipadee Zip isn't approved. I'll have to check on the Merlin suit.

@periwinklebee: Yep, worried waiting is all we can do too. Poor little guy.

Many daycares have regulations that prohibit magic merlin or anything with enough weight to do any good. In our case we just had to wait it out. By 4 months he was napping better at daycare in his sleepsack than at home, and still does at 19 months 😂 So in the long run, there wasn't anything to worry about... I'm not sure that there's much to do besides wait for the startle reflex to fade, but I'm sure the dark room and sound machine will help!

We transitioned from swaddle, to Merlin Magic sleepsuit, and then to Zipadee zip with both kids. Every transition was easy. Many babies in our daycare use the Magic Merlin, because our daycare doesn't allow swaddling without a Doctor's note (don't get me started on that!)

My LO was struggling to drop the swaddle for like, a week. We ended up using the zipadeezip, which really helped. Is that an approved sleeping sack/thing?

I don't know if this will work for your situation, but it was a lifesaver for me as we transitioned my DS out of swaddles:

Love To Dream Swaddle UP 50/50 Transition Bag, Mint, Large, 18.5-24 lbs, Patented Zip-Off Wings, Gently Help Baby Safely Transition from Being swaddled to arms Free Before Rolling Over https://www.amazon.com/dp/B07CZRL5SL/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_i_QIvxDbMP651D9

(* We began with DS "swaddled," then took one arm out, and then progressed to 2 over about 14 days. The slow progression was easier for DS to take than having both arms out. )
Best of luck :goodluck: with finding a workable solution.

Hi, Bees! My DS is 10 weeks old and struggling to nap without his swaddle at daycare. Poor LO has the sniffles and a cough, too (I think it's daycare crud; no fever), which isn't helping, but he's super struggling to sleep without a swaddle. He wakes up within minutes of being put down, sleeps maybe an hour a day cumulatively, and comes home EXHAUSTED.

He's in a temporary place right now, moving to his regular school and classroom next week, where they'll use white noise and a dark room plus get them all on a schedule, which will help, but still no swaddle allowed. They tried the Nested Bean weighted swaddle (did nothing; that "weight" is really light?!) but currently use his Halo Sleep Sack with his arms out. Any tips that you used for your LO if they struggled with this, too, or do we just have to wait it out until he's old enough to be comfortable?

@cake2017: Would he be able to roll in the Merlin, though? We used it until she was able to roll over in the actual suit (she could roll not in the suit for a while before she was strong enough to roll in the suit). Perhaps some people stop the suit as soon as the baby can roll at all, but I expect many don't, and just keep an eye out for when the baby can roll in the suit. I'm only suggesting this because it really does sound like the other sleep solutions (zipadee zip etc.), which try to solve the arm issue, wouldn't do anything for your leg issue.

With my first it made a huge difference. He really needed to be swaddled and it was a good transition for him. We went to zipadeezip after.

With my second, it didn't make much of a difference but we still used it until he could roll. Now that he's in the zipadeezip he is sleeping better, I think he wanted to be a belly sleeper!

I do! Used it for my first, loved it. She wasn't a huge baby, so we used it from like 3 to almost 7 months! It helped her a ton and we were able to transition out after just fine. With my 2nd we didn't end up using it.

We used all sorts of swaddles for DS1 and eventually used the Merlin suit which helped us tremendously from about 3-5 months. His legs would also wake him up and we could never lay him down in a regular swaddle without his legs pumping which would inevitably cause him to wake up. Once he started being able to roll over in the suit we had to stop using it and decided to cosleep because no matter what we did he would wake himself up. We were in survival mode and couldn’t handle losing anymore sleep! Good luck!

@cake2017: You can't use it if they are rolling. My second loved the Love to Dream Swaddle up, which is a tight sleepsack. It won't help with his legs but that's just something he will grow out of.

@Mrs. Goose: Sounds like my baby!!! I hold him in the rocking chair most of the night because i fall asleep there.

I put him down he wakes up. I know eventually i will need to sleepbteach cause he wakes up every hour. I know he wants to sleep.... so do I!!!!

We went back to the zipadee last night. It really doesn’t work because of his legs. I’m hoping his legs will lay down permanently throughout the night. I assume this is normal.

Good luck to you! I feel better i am not alone!

@cake2017: I’m currently in the throes of crap night sleep because of a similar situation and baby just wanting to be held. The startle reflex is finally dying down, but he wants to be held all night and it’s killing me because I want to sleep by myself in our bed. The crib is right beside me and I put a pillow on top of his legs...it has helped lengthen his sleep sometimes. Sometimes I tuck a breastfeeding pillow around his legs on the bottom to try and mimic being held on the sides. If I had money I’d probably buy a dockatot to try even though people say they’re not the safest.

I did the arms up swaddle briefly, came to it too late and it didn’t seem to help much. He sucks his hands and I think might start sucking his thumb so I don’t want to take that away from him.

He’s just in a regular sleep sack, grobag which seems to have just a touch of weight at 2.5 tog. Not enough to stop the leg flailing...hence the pillow. I tried it early on when I found it tbay restint my hand on his legs would get him to settle sometimes.

Hope you find something that helps. It’s all tribal and error and it’s baby sleep is mind boggling to me and this is my second. My first was a great sleeper so this babe is putting me through the ringer.

@cake2017: No, I never had any issue with that. I think there are different types of Zippadees, but the one that we used didn't seem to have a way for the fabric to get in the face (the arm fabric was too short for that to happen).

The one that worked best was the swaddle with velcro etc. He slept well and comfortably. Now he’s breaking out of it and doesn’t want to be wrapped.

I didn’t find the transition out of it to be bad at all. A day or two of crappy naps but that was largely because he was rolling over (that’s why we stopped the Merlin) so I think we would have had those same crappy days of naps anyway because usually rolling over does that.

@cake2017: Have you looked into a love to dream swaddle? They can self soothe in it, but not sure it would help with your leg situation. We loved that thing, but again, you need to unzip the arms (if you buy one, get the 50/50 version) once they start rolling.

We have it. It was ok. I mean it bought us a few nights of improved sleep, but honestly it was just another thing to transition out of so odds are you'll be back on this board in another month asking what to transition to next once your LO starts to roll. I'd either skip to a zipadee zip or a traditional halo sack and gut this bumpy road out a little bit. The zipadeezip allowed her to chew on the fabric over her hands which she found comforting. And there was pretty much no transition to the halo sack.
