I got a puddle jumper for my 18 m as well. We only used it once but he needs more practice, since his head still can go under if he goes forward. It just makes it easier to hold him in the water! Since they are so wiggly and want to be free.

We are going to spend a week at a cottage with a pool in august. My 17 month old LOVES the water. I have always held him in the pool, but he might like a little more freedom (I would always be right there).

What does your 1.5 use in the pool?

We've been doing back to back sessions since last summer for my 3.5 year old. Im afraid if we stop for a while she'll lose some skills and I really want her to know how to swim before we stop. We live in Southern California. We don't have a pool but my parents have a hot tub and we go to the beach in the summers, so I want her to be comfortable and safe in the water.

We've been to two different sessions but not back to back. Ours is the same way - you sign up for an 8 week program, and then you can sign up for the next 8 week program. Usually it's winter/fall (so you'd sign up for Sept-Nov and Jan-Mar at the same time) and then spring/summer. We did Sept-Nov this year but then decided to skip Jan-Mar because we wanted a break, to try something else, and sometimes in the winter session the water is really cold. We'll probably sign up for the April - June session.

We have done two swim lesson sessions, but not back to back. Usually after one session we decide that we don't want the commitment since our weekend schedules are a bit hectic. For the last few weeks we've just been going to open swim time which our Y offers on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons.

Our swim classes are through a swim school, it is year round. We don't sign up for a session, it is ongoing. We have to give them thirty days notice when we want to stop. I like year round because they don't lose any skills then.

We do swim through the Y and maybe our program isnt as popular but we dont really have an issue getting into the same time slot each session. We've been doing the 9:30 class on saturday for almost a year now... we skipped one of the summer sessions (too many weekend trips planned) and the session over the christmas holidays (again to many plans on saturdays to make it worth while). My LO is 2 1/2 and this is her only activity

...do you sign up for back-to-back programs?

For instance, at my YMCA, you sign up for an 8 week program for $66 and try to get into the time slot you want - if you want to continue after that, you have to sign up for another 8 weeks for another $66 and hope you signed up early enough to get in the same slot.

I'm curious if people do swim classes all year round, or only for winter months, or do one session on and one session off, etc.

Should work fine. The only thing I've found when using covers as swim diapers is that I have to make sure to squeeze the water out when I get LO out of the pool. I don't have to do that when using our regular swim diapers.

Our local wading pools and spray parks require a "tight plastic pants or diapers designed for swimming". Couldn't I just use our regular fuzzibunz without any inserts? Since the outer layer is made out of PUL, they won't let any poop leak out. Has anyone else tried this?

I don't really want to buy special swim diapers for LO, especially since we don't get that many hot days here so we won't be swimming every day or anything.

@Mrs. Deer: we found ours at Target, so I was able to try them on him to get a fit I was happy with. This one is zippered a body suit that covers legs and arms, I wanted something very secure that wouldn't just slip off (at least a crotch strap is a must with these slippery little kiddos).

Ultimately, at 18 months someone had him by the hand the entire time because he just wasn't steady enough at that point (started walking on his own at 15 mos). He also liked to do the "deadman float" diving head first into the water, he is super comfortable in the water since he has been in swim lessons since he was 2 months old, but the ocean is a different beast.

The puddle jumpers aren't bad but even right at 30 lbs it put my daughters face very close to the water when she was floating. It fits her much better this year that she's closer to 35 lbs.

I would really recommend getting some sort of life vest or suit. Floaties that just go on the arms aren't great for the beach. If you are alone at the beach, one second checking your phone or putting the lid on the sunscreen and she could be out to the water!

I bought a floatation suit for my son for an 18 month beach trip, but we never ended up using it. We really never went in beyond knee deep on myself and he was happy to splash around in the tide pools. Sunscreen, a big floppy hat that tied on was a must have, along with a rash guard to help prevent sunburn.

My current family and I just get in the pool/ocean anytime she wants to go swimming. We started teaching her how to swim from a very young age.

That said, my last family got lifejackets from a box store. I found this one on Amazon- http://www.amazon.com/Stearns-Infant-Classic-Boating-Vest/dp/B00364AKBQ/ref=sr_1_3?s=sporting-goods&ie=UTF8&qid=1402957600&sr=1-3&keywords=baby+life+jacket+under+30+lbs

Edit-
We live near the beach and I go with nanny LO all the time. I take a chair like this-http://www.amazon.com/Rio-Brands-Chairs-SC580-149-Aloha-Beach/dp/B006MVMUNG/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1402957799&sr=8-5&keywords=lightweight+beach+chairs. A towel, sunscreen, snacks/lunch, beach toys, and a change of clothes for the kiddo. We're pretty low-key. I can fit everything in one bag, carry my chair, and hold onto her hand while we walk from the car to the sand.

I recently bought a life vest for my 27 month old. She's very tiny (24 LBS). I found an infant life vest at Costco that I think was for 1 year and up (around 20 - 30 LBS, if I recall correctly). It fit her very well. Maybe check to see if your local Costco carries them? I saw them as recently as last week.

We're going to San Diego this Saturday for 9 days (woohoo!). My husband's in the navy and will be doing a week long training, so it'll be me and my 18 month old at the beach most days. She likes to run and bellyflop into the water...it's terrifying!

How do you keep your LO's safe at the beach? Life vest? Floaties? Most I find say 30 pounds and up and she's only 24 or so.

Any recommendations on this and really any beach gear would be appreciated! :)

@brownie: Wow!!! Incredible. I wish I had started LO around 18 mos. We started at almost 2 1/2 and she still absolutely loves the water but has a few fears, I think b/c of her age. She voluntarily picked up a ring off the pool floor once and was elated. But I usually have to coax her to do underwater canonballs, rocket ships etc. Her main fun thing is wading around on her own...she likes to be in control.

We take lessons once a week. LO is 18 months old and she's been taking lessons since she was 6 months. The first four to five months were more getting confortable with the water. Now she's learning to jump in and go under water.

@brownie: Those videos are fantastic! DW takes photos of our LO at his classes so far, but we may have to upgrade to video when he's a little more comfortable in the water, and a little less distracted by mobile phones.
