@cnidaria: we went on vacation when my older daughter was 20 months old and she pooped in her wet swim diaper Every. Single. Day. Both disposable and the reusable one I used when I thought we were in the clear. Luckily we were staying in a condo with a washing machine.

Like others have said. Swim diapers are not absorbent they just keep in poop. The chlorine in the pool makes it ok that the pee gets into the pool

I would probably double check what the condo's rules are... some places will specify that children have to be potty trained in order to go in the water. If they don't have anything posted, though, I wouldn't worry about it! I remember asking our public pool about it when our LO started swim lessons at 4 months and they just laughed and said that's the reason why they keep the pool so well chlorinated!

We have a couple of reusable ones that we got on Amazon, they're adjustable and have been fitting from 4-20 months so far. We've been lucky, though, because she's never actually pooped in one!

I love my reusable ones! They fit tight so I've never worried about poo, and didn't have any leakage when LO had a really big peanut butter type poo in our backyard pool. Highly recommend! this is the one I have but there are others. The snaps on the side makes them easy to remove.

I have both reuseable and the disposable ones but I always fear the poop in the reuseable diapers so I tend to only use them if I'm sure we are clear for poop. I also tend to be an idiot and completely forget about changing my LO out of the regular diaper until I see his huge puffy diaper under his bathing suit. LOL.

We used a reusable one and used a very small, trim cloth insert in it. It was enough to contain one pee so that we could change into the swim diaper more than mere moments before getting into the water without risk of a mess.

I'm not sure if this is the answer you're looking for, but I got reusable ones from Amazon. They were amazing and 'grew' with my son. They also are eco-friendly. They were so tight they actually did seem to hold water (and pee???) in at least a little. When I would take the diaper off a huge gush of water would come out!

I am thankful to this forum for teaching me that swim diapers don’t contain pee- I was actually able to learn this the easy way!!

So yes, swim diapers contain poop only. I generally use disposable at our pool club, but if she poops there and I change it I’ll put her in a reusable swim diaper, since I’m fairly sure she won’t poop again so it’s easier on my wallet and the environment. At home, like in our little kiddie pool, I usually do reusable swim diaper for the same reason. Disposable swim diapers are expensive! But wet poop is nasty...

And yes, we don't travel in our swim diapers  I was actually so proud of myself recently for thinking of this: strip clothes, sunscreen while in regular diaper, switch diapers, bathing suit!! Way less stressful than trying to make sure noone pees in the house while I get them both ready 😛😛

At our swim club, the rule is that babies must wear a swim diaper (disposable or reusable) covered by plastic pants (Gerber makes them for potty training with old-school cloth diapers/cloth training pants, I think that's the original intended purpose). But again, that's just to ensure containment of looser, baby-textured bowel movements, haha...not pee.

I learned the hard way about swim diapers not holding pee when DD1 peed through one (and all over my dry sundress, haha) while taking family beach photos. Oops! :) :)

So it's also worth noting you might not want to travel in a car seat in a swim diaper only!!!

It's fine. Chlorine kills pee. I use reusable diapers because I cloth diaper, but I also potty trained early and taught my kid that if he needs to pee, we will pee in the shower (which is bad, but we pee on the drain and he can't fit on the potties at the pool)

Also, as a swimmer, most adults pee in the pool. I swear it's just my toddler who gets out to pee :-)

Swim diapers are just to contain poop. But really - any public pool is probably 10% pee, at least that’s my theory. We were in Mexico and they had a kid’s pool and my aunt said that it was probably full of pee and I pointed out that the bros who spent their day at the swim-up bar were also probably not getting out to pee.

That being said I did invest in a reusable swim diaper just for environmental reasons.

No swim diaper contains pee. That’s just the way it is. It should (mostly) contain poop and that is their purpose.
No one is expecting a baby or child wearing a swim diaper to be able to say “I have to pee” and get out of the pool first. The whole point is to wear when you aren’t potty trained.

I always know that there’s going to be some amount of pee in any pool that kids are in. 🤷🏻‍♀️
Oddly enough my almost 4yo won’t pee in the pool. He tells us multiple times that he has to pee and we have to get out and take him. But up until maybe 6-12m ago, I’m positive he peed in the pool. We can’t control it!

So I spent half of last summer putting my kids in swim diapers (Huggies Little Swimmers) for playing in our baby pool, water table, and in a grown up pool before I realized that the reason the diapers don't blow up is that they don't contain pee at all. OOPS.

Now this summer - we are going to spend a week on vacation with access to a chlorinated pool for a small condo complex (18 units). I intend to take my kids in again - 2YOs. Is it wrong of me to put them in these diapers plus a normal swim suit? I've seen the iPlay resuable swim diapers at target - but I don't really understand how they would be any better at containing pee.

What are the social norms in this situation? haha.
