I agree with Teach Your Monster to Read. It’s great for emerging readers. I managed to snag it when it was free and it’s awesome. I would pay for it.

There's Endless Reader which is similar to Endless Alphabet but geared towards whole sight words. But, if he's over that one it might be hit or miss how much it will keep his attention.
Following to get ideas for my own 5-yr old who is also pretty close to reading but whose motivation wavers.

Osmo .... it's a kit that you buy to attach to your ipad, and it is amazing for building letter/sound relationship, CVC words, etc. It also comes with numbers, tangrams, artwork kits...there's so much you can do with it. I also like that it's kinesthetic and interactive so not as passive as a regular app. I use them in my reading interventions at school and also at home with my daughters.

Looking for any and all suggestions for tablet games (iPad or Amazon Fire) for a 5 year old who is thisclose to reading. I’m usually pretty limiting with the screen time but if there are a few games that will encourage his reading I’m all for it! We’ve done Endless Alphabet but I think he’s over it. Thanks!

Both of my kids have kindles - they have been dropped and still work perfectly - that said they do have a new kindle for kids that will be replaced at no charge if your child breaks it.

We use the Kindle free time app which allows my kids to pick and choose their own things - they are all kid approved. The ones that aren't in there I can download and then put in their free time account.

You can purchase movies and then download them so you don't need an internet connection (I did this with Frozen for DD).

We have been super happy with them! Tons of games, videos, and apps!

My nephew has a Kindle, I believe. My sister got one that has a break-for-any-reason warrenty and allows you to download any Amazon Prime show/movie for 30 days, I believe. I'll check with her on the details. She loves it because he always has stuff to watch, even in the car or on a plane where they don't have wifi.

@Mrs. D: we have a bubble style cover after hubs dropped it and shattered the screen. But unlike an iPad it was relatively easy to replace the screen. So that's an added bonus.

If you get a second gen nexus there are some neat kids covers with handles etc.

We bought a first gen nexus. We use the Google Play app to purchase and download videos. A nice thing about the Play store is that you can rent movies (they are a bit much but totally worth it). Then those rented movies can be downloaded onto the tablet and watched for 24 hours without internet access.

There are some apps that are not available on it that are available on iPads but so far it hasn't been an issue for us. My son has been able to go back and forth on both iOS and Android since he was 18 months old.

This Christmas we're going on a long drive and flight to visit friends for a week in BC.
We're thinking of giving our daughter her big present early so she can use it while travelling to beat the boredom.

What tablet computer do you recommend? I don't want an ipad since it's so expensive, but the options are endless. I'm hoping to score a deal on Beyond the Rack, but don't want to grab a bad deal.

Something I can download apps on, but don't need to access the internet to use (since we'll be in the car and on the plane).

Suggestions?

Samsung is evil so I refused to get the Galaxy :) I bought the iPad only after LO was born (as a push gift + bday gift for myself)! She was super fussy and I needed something to keep me sane while I sat in bed trying to feed her/rock her to sleep. I still use it every day!

It's not as easy typing with though, so I still prefer to use my laptop when writing, but it's great for FB and browsing HB in bed. There's also a bunch of apps that help calm LO. Just that made it worthwhile for me!

As for other tablets, I'm getting DH the Kindle Fire HD. It's small so it'll be much easier to carry around. It doesn't have a rear facing camera, but he doesn't take pictures anyway so alls good. I know you aren't interested in the minis but it's android and aside from less apps available, I think it's pretty good for the price!

BTW, Adobe is no longer supporting flash mobile it's not just iPad anymore.

Nothing else in the house is Apple (minus the iPods) except my iPad 3 I got through a generous parent at work. I like it. I don't know that I would have sought out a tablet if I weren't gifted one, but I like it all the same. Some of it is not very intuitive, but I'm learning quickly. Also, you can't look at websites with flash--I don't know how that works on other tablets.
