Ours is not that easy; you have to request a form and submit proof. We did file this time but they also had our house 50k above where we just purchased it last August so it was an easy fix. Next year I can't imagine we'd have proof it was wrong. What are you guys submitting each year?

Glad to hear it was so easy! I told my husband about this right away over the weekend, haha. We don't even own a house yet, but I just said, "Remember this for later!" I don't know how any of this home ownership stuff works yet :meh:

Hmm interesting! You can apply for abatements or exemptions here in Boston but they assess the properties way lower than what they are worth/they would sell for so I don't want to rock the boat. We don't have homestead but we do have residential exemptions, which sounds like the same thing.

@regberadaisy: you get a homestead exemption if you live in the property. The market value on my home is definitely higher than what the appraisal district says it is! However, I don't want to pay taxes on the market value so that's why I protest. Here the amount listed with the county has no effect on how much I can sell for or how much it would appraise for. It's only for tax purposes.

@HTownMom: OMG you didn't have a homestead exemption? Gah! Glad you got it figured out...that alone will save you a lot of money! I've always protested our taxes online and they've accepted them every time without me having to appear in person...hope the same is true for you :)

What's homestead? I just noticed that they raised our appraised value recently. Likely because houses are selling a lot more around here and like hot cakes. We're not protesting because we have gutted and renovated a lot of our home and will continue to do so. Our house is likely worth more than the appraised value right now. ;)

They do make it easy. You should save a decent amount once the homestead exemption kicks in. It's good you noticed you didn't have one! And you're welcome. :)

After meeting with the Houston Bees this weekend for brunch, I was told to protest our home property tax appraisal value each year, which I never knew!

The best part is that it's all online and with a few clicks of the phone, I submitted our first ever protest on the value. When compared to a home literally right next door, our house was over 7% higher and we have literally done nothing since we moved in 5 years ago.

This was such and easy process that I wish we had been doing this since we first bought our house. Plus with the oil and gas market down, there is no way our house value is that good.

Further it seems we don't have a homestead exemption on file, which also seems crazy. So I downloaded the app for it and I'm going to submit that exemption request tonight too!

I've never really read the appraisal and homestead papers in depth before and if I did it was too imitating to think about doing. But with the protest online and the homestead as an app, I don't think it could be any easier now and I'm definitely going to keep trying each year!

Do you protest your property tax value? What about exceptions, do you have your house homesteaded or claim a different one?

Thanks again to Mrs. Pickle and LawBee11 for the tax info!
