Wow that is so scary! Did you install security cameras or an alarm after this?

I haven't had my home broken in but there has been peeping toms in my neighborhood and men who knock really loud and jiggle your doorknob at the same time to try and break in. So freaky! When I was in college I had my car broken into and all my books and jewelry were stolen :(

oh my goodness! i'm so sorry that happened to you! thank goodness you were home when they broke in, it's terrifying when you think about the number of weapons that are used against their owners. loosing all of your videos/pics must be heartbreaking =( have you sent them to many people? maybe you could ask people to resend them back to you so you have some.

my place has never been broken into, but my brother's place was recently. he was home, asleep, and woke up to a man standing over him. i can't even imagine

Oh no! That is so scary and invasive :-( Once when I was around 9 or 10, somebody broke in but we were all home. We think they knocked and nobody heard it because I was in my room watching TV, and my dad was in the shower and both dogs were in the bathroom (they really liked laying in there with the steam), so they didn't bark either. So then they kicked in the front door, and we heard THAT and hearing us spooked them away, thank God. It was in the middle of the day on a weekend.

We had a couple of break-ins on our block last month after we moved in, so we decided to get an alarm system.

My SIL's car went missing from the high school parking lot. We just thought someone was playing a practical joke on her. Later that night we were out to dinner and DH started getting phone calls from the credit card company saying his card was being charged which we thought was weird because he had his wallet on him. All of the sudden something clicked in his mind and he realized it was the credit card that was in our dresser. We raced home to find anything and everything valuable to us had been taken. They had taken my SIL car, found the garage door opener in the glove box and then looked at the registration to find our address. They then pulled her car into our garage, loaded it up with all of our things, and took off. They then used DH's social security card to get a fake id and open more credit cards. A year later the guy got caught trying to steal another car and pretended he was DH. It was a mess, but we eventually got it all figured out (3+ years later!).

When I was in 8th grade our house was robbed by our neighbors. We had always been a bit leery of them because they were strange and we noticed they liked to watch us a lot. Come to find out (after the fact) they were attempting to memorize our schedule so they knew when the house would be empty. My dad was actually home when it happened since he owns his own business and primarily works out of his shop in the backyard so he was less than 50 feet away and the back door was unlocked when it happened. We didn't even realize it happened at first because they were very neat and only took things like the last book of checks in a box and a lock box with ALL of our important documents (social security cards, birth certificates, papers to our house and a rental property, old drivers licenses, etc.). We didn't even realize anything had happened until my parents started getting overdraft notices from the banking and freaking out and blaming each other. This was before online banking and electronic check capturing so they had to go down to the bank and request copies of the checks and that's when they realized the signature didn't match either of theirs. It was a huge, long, drawn out process and we never recovered any of the documents. They all had to be replaced via filing lost/stolen paperwork and we still have issues with things popping up on our credit reports because of it.

@sandsandmore: @eiko2010: It is a very violating and terrible feeling. We obviously are having trouble sleeping and I hope we can start feeling better again soon.

@MamaMoose: I'm very thankful they were long gone by the time we got home. That would be incredibly scary to walk in on some stranger in your home.

@purrpletulips: That is really weird.

@looch: We don't have a safe (something my husband got an earful from me, especially since our son had recently started walking) and they were in closets and drawers.

@MrsBrewer: We don't live in an awesome neighborhood but we have lived there for over 7 years without a single near miss in the neighborhood. The officer that came over to take the report said summer is more common due to kids with time on their hands. We asked what he'd suggest we do and he said you can get an alarm but all that does is limit the amount of time they are in the house, not prevent them from coming in.

@Jennimac: I can't imagine not having my husband with me and dealing with all of it.

A home I've lived in has never been broken into. But I am a little nervous right now, we just bought a house and it's not in a bad neighborhood, but we are bordering a pretty sketchy area. So some of the no-so-great people are close to us.

Yes. The first summer we moved into our house. One night Hubs and I heard noise coming from next door and saw 2 people trying to break into our neighbor's house. We called the police and reported it. They took off when the cops showed up. The next day, Hubs called me saying that that police had called him because a burglary was reported at our house. Turns out a different neighbor had seen the same 2 kids breaking into our house. The police showed up and chased them out of our house. The only things they took were an old watch and an old digital camera, which we got back. The cops caught up with the one kid in the creek behind our house and tazed him; they found the other one hiding in his shower. We had to go to court and testify that they were the ones we saw at our neighbor's house the night before.

So technically, nothing was taken, since we got it back, but it was the worst feeling. I still feel a little unsafe when Hubs is gone overnight.

My home no, my apartment yes. Apparently a guy I was dating for a few weeks stole my spare key while I was in the bathroom on day and lived in my apartment (without permission) while I was out of town for a weekend. He apparently didn't think I'd care because he left a complete mess (food boxes/unclean pans, etc) all over including finger prints. The only thing he stole (other than the food) was my portable CD player.

When I was in college I actually came home to an intruder in my parents house. The cops think I must have come home right after he got there because nothing was taken and I yelled at him and chased him out of the house (which was incredibly stupid I might add and I'm lucky he was just there to rob us and not interested in hurting me).

We came home Monday to our front door wide open and our house ransacked. For the most part everything is replaceable (front door, laptops, cameras, guns, kindle, etc) but we lost all of our photos and videos of our son's first 16 months. We had backed them up but only to the other computers in the house, which were all taken. Lesson learned: backup digital content to a cloud or similar. We had planned for electronic failure, not theft.

Has your home ever been burglarized? Did you lose anything sentimental or irreplaceable?
