@ChasingARainbow: you know your child and if you think he would be okay with those two transitions then go for it and help him out with the tools you already have from his therapy from the past few years. I would be a little bit worried with two big changes happening together-the new babe and way the family dynamic will change, coupled with a break in therapy-but maybe he will do really well with it! If he adjusts well to change then you have a good footing to start from anyway.

@Mrs. Tiger: He receives occupational and speech therapy twice a week. Each session is an hour long.

@mrbee: I do keep in contact with her, but she's currently the new director of the facility we hope to go to. She is always busy right now. My husband said that we can do it ourselves for the time being. It helps that my sister is a special needs teacher. I guess she can help me out.

@MamaCate: He actually does very well with change. Thank God! He kind of just goes with the flow. He wasn't always that way.

Honestly, it seems like it would be even more important to continue your LO's therapy during this time of transition.

How frequently does he get therapy/how many sessions would he be missing? Agree that you could take on some yourself, but that might be a lot to juggle with a newborn on top of it all.

Not saying you should always maximize therapy sessions - we chose to discontinue OT for my D when I thought he wasn't getting much out of it, and didn't seek a different option (although at that time he was getting PT and early intervention therapies).

@ChasingARainbow: Could you contact your old therapist, and see if they're willing to do private sessions during the interim?

Or alternatively, maybe try doing the therapy yourself for a while during the break? I observed my daughter's EI sessions for months on end, and could definitely have done some sessions if I had to... especially for a finite amount of time!

@ChasingARainbow: how does your son do with changes in routine? How attached is he to the current schedule?

It sounds like your DH has some good points about what might work for your family but you didn't say a lot about how this would be for your son. I am wondering how he would respond to the changes in his routine combined with the changes in your family.

Hello everyone! So I just wanted your opinion on this matter. I have an 8 year old son on the spectrum and he receives occupational and speech therapy. We've been going to the same therapy center since he was four, but decided that we wanted to change facilities. They recently changed management and made many changes that just don't fit our son's needs. On top of that all his old therapist have also left due to changes made. Anyway, the new place we want to take him to is closer to home but there is a bit of a waiting list. We are also expecting our third child. My husband thinks we should discontinue therapy at our current location the month before my due date and take three months off before going to the new place. He thinks it would be a good time to adjust as a new family of five and give us all some needed down time. It sounds great to me, but I can't help but to feel guilty like I'm somehow messing something up for my son. If you were in my shoes would you have your son take a break? Do you think it would hurt him in some way?
