@newmummy: nope! It was never resolved. She either grew out of it, or it was related to her being MSPI (which I didn't know till she was 3 months). Sorry your baby is doing this too--it's really disconcerting, isn't it?

LO does this cough thing when she's about to, or already is, crying. I refer to it as her "drama queen bark", as it truly sounds like she's fake coughing for attention.

It's a really soft/weak cough, and only occurs as a precursor when she's fussing. However, with all these responses, I'm going to ask the ped about it!

E did for a long time. At first I thought it was the fake cough or learning how to use his voice but then it turned into a real cough. As it turns out he has chronic croup. Which is where they sound like a dog or seal barking. It is the narrowing of the airways usually after a cold has come and gone. But for E it is brought on by allergies.

@Anagram: Yes, and she's still on them, however I will say she has a disease of the esophagus that we found out about in May too, so that could also be part of the problem. However, reflux was the first diagnosis (and it was confirmed via x-ray)

@Crisark: how did you put her in the Boppy? This may sound strange, but my LO likes to be propped tummy town in the Boppy. She naps really well like that, but I'd never do it overnight.

For some reason, she hates being laid back in the Boppy and always cries. But propped up on her tummy and she naps like a champ.

@Anagram: It took about a week with us... maybe a little less. And I was only having one coke a day. But it just about killed me to stop because it was my only source of energy.... I ended up getting caffeine free drinks and trying to trick my brain that it was real caffeine so maybe you could switch to decaff and still have your coffee. I would say I got used to it in a few weeks. Now I don't really miss it that much. I am so thankful that it worked though. And it was better than having to give up dairy! Hope it all works out for you!

@coastmama: oh no! Worst news ever! I drink coffee every day, although usually just 1 cup since I have GERD,yield and coffee irritates it. =(

No coffee + newborn stage is going to equal a very tired mama.

But if it works for her and helps her sleep better, I guess its worth a go. So if I eliminate caffeine I should see a change in about a week?

This is exactly what happened with us! At first I just thought it was his "sleep" sounds, but then it started concerning me so I called our ped. He said it sounded like reflux and to get a Rock N' Play for him to sleep in. So we did that, and things got a little better, but not completely. We would also hold him upright for at least 30 minutes after a feeding. Then, somewhere on the internet I read that drinking caffeine can cause your baby to have reflux. So I stopped caffeine that day, and it took about a week to get completely out of our systems and it stopped! Completely. We have had no more problems at all with reflux and he's been able to sleep in his crib ever since. So.... if you are BF and drinking caffeine (even a small amount) you might want to try that.

My daughter makes this noise but it started out as a 'fake cough' but she was much older than your LO, she was maybe 5 months? If you rule out any medical issues that might be causing it, she could just be finding her voice and enjoying the different sounds she can make.

Sounds a lot like what A did before being put on Reflux meds two weeks ago (4 months old tomorrow).
She did the cough for no real reason, hiccups all the time, random inconsolable screaming fits.....she was diagnosed with silent reflux.
She seems a lot happier on the Zantac, we also switched her formula a week ago and she doesn't sleep flat,. She sleeps on a boppy pillow in her crib and has since birth. Dr. always suggested having her elevated.

My 3 week old constantly makes this super-loud throat clearing noise constantly after eating, for hours. And she makes it all night She also makes this hacking sound, like a person trying to hock a loogie. She sounds exactly like my grandad did when he was trying to get junk out of this throat.

Is this a sign of post nasal drip? Or reflux?

She definitely has it more often after eating or when we put her flat on her back, but even in the Rock n Play, she will do it occasionally. When she's in her crib, it's nearly constant....even though we try to keep her upright (on our shoulder) for 30-45 min after eating.

We've tried the humidifier for the past few nights, but that hasn't made a difference. We tried putting books under one side of the bed so we can get a bit of an incline, but it just made her slide down a bit and didn't really stop the hacking/throat clearing. Holding her on our shoulder is the only thing that makes her stop, but I can't very well do that 24/7.

She doesn't sleep when she's doing this, so it's disrupting our sleep, too! Even if she falls completely asleep on us, the second we put her down on a flat surface, she starts the hacking, wakes herself up, and then we have to start all over. I've tried waiting it out (just to see if she's hacking in her sleep and will continue sleeping), but 9 times out of 9, she will continue making the noise until it escalates into a full cry and she's wide awake.

Did this happen to anyone else? What was the cause?
