@wonderstruck: we do exactly this! No throwing anything, toys taken away/dinner over. I just don't think they can differentiate yet what is allowed.

@wonderstruck: This is exactly what we do.

We remove whatever he throws and let him know that he doesn't get it back since he threw it. He's 2.5 now and doesn't throw nearly as much, but he gets 1 warning. If he does it again, it's an immediate timeout. It's gotten so much better from when he was 1!

I don't like to replace what he's thrown with something more appropriate, like a ball, because at this age I think they don't really get the difference between what is and isn't okay to throw, so for now the rule is just no throwing. If L throws a toy, I tell him no throwing and then put the toy up where he can't get it for a few hours. If he throws food, dinner is over. If he throws his stuffed animals, then he has to go to sleep without them, etc.

This is really the only thing that has worked for us - with a new little one in the house that could be really hurt by flying objects, we had to put a stop to the throwing fast!

@Bubbles: That made me laugh (in a commiserating sort of way)!

@skipper2010: @Alivoo01: I might board up all my windows if he keeps this up until 18 months. The throwing of food is the worst, because it's almost like a compulsion that he HAS to throw things, even though he really wants it. Then he looks all sad-eyed at the food, or at the stuffed animals he threw out of his crib.

@Adira: I'm glad to hear it's hopefully just a phase! We haven't hit the full on tantrum part of toddlerhood yet, but I know it's coming soon. I can see myself doing the eye-roll many times in the future!

Another 18 month old mommy here to commiserate. We're also in the throwing phase, and lately, it's been food when he's done eating or doesn't want to eat it. Arg!!!

I think it's a phase. Xander went through a phase of throwing things a lot, but now doesn't do it nearly as much. Now he knows to just throw balls (for the most part). Unless he's mad - then he'll throw whatever he's got in his hands! *eye roll at toddler tantrums*

My 18 mo old was throwing puzzle pieces and books at me and he thought it was hilarious. I would firmly grab his arm and say "we don't throw, be gentle...gentle..." I would then remove the object. After a few tries it seemed to work. We still have random moments here and there where the throwing starts up again, but it's not nearly as bad as it used to be. Aaaaand I hope I didn't jinx that by typing it out! hahaha

Commiserating! My 14mo isn't much of a thrower, but his thing is to go around hitting stuff really hard with the item of his choice. The other week DH walked in to the living room to find him repeatedly slapping the sound bar with a slice of melon!

Haha we keep trying to teach my 15 month old to throw things to the dog so they can amuse each other. His throw is more of drop, lol.

My 14 month old throws everything. I'm surprised a window hasn't been broken yet in our home. Food, toys, bath toys, everything out of his crib...fun times.

Is there anyway to curb this behavior? I keep trying to remove the toy he throws and replace with a soft ball he can throw, but not sure if that is just confusing him. Or is this just a phase and will pass and I need to just let it go?
