@bhbee: I'm sort of in the same boat as you....so happy to lend support and love and answer questions. I'm done having kids but have been through a LOT to get to this place so I have all the sympathy in the world for all of you going through infertility and will be your #1 cheerleader!

• How long have you been/were you TTC?
3 years before conceiving DD1

• What interventions have you done/are doing?
We went straight to IVF, though we tried "natural IVF" twice, i.e., no stimulating drugs, just monitor the cycle, then retrieve the mature egg and peform ICSI with DH's sperm sample. I got pregnant but had a blighted ovum, and no heartbeat was found at the 6 week check up. I had a D&C, the moved on to traditional, stimulated IVF and was able to do one retrieval that produced both of my amazing girls! We still have 4 PGS-normal embryos on ice and are desperately trying to find a non-religious organization to help us facilitate adoption.

• Reason for intervention?
DH has low motility and morphology, and count. He is on immunosupressant drugs due to a kidney transplant and we think one of the drugs caused this.

• Any successes? Yes

• Current # of Children - 2: DD1 is 4 and DD2 is 20 months

• The most difficult part of the process?
SO much damn time for everything to happen when I was more than ready! Feeling like it was all my responsibility for the appointments, nonstop prodding of my lady parts, emotional exhaustion/pressure, constant scrutiny when the IF diagnosis was on the male side (rarely talked about and it made me resentful that everyone assumes IF is always the "fault" of the woman--when it's nobody's fault at all)

So, an update from me. As most of you who keep up with the POAS board already know, I overstimmed with my Follistim this cycle and was told due to having 4 large follies and a ga-zillion smaller ones, that our TI cycle needed to be cancelled and I should not trigger. WELL, DH and I had an "OOOPS" around OV (* broken polyurethane prophylactic without spermicide... I am latex allergic and spermicide causes an itchy rash in a very private zone. 😳😳😳) so, I found myself in the TWW anyway! I am 13 dpo of a normal 16 day luteal. I am so afraid to test because a BFN during a phase with so many ova would crush me. If I end up not pregnant (pending if I have any cysts), my next cycle will begin with only 50-IU of Follistim and I will be given an U/S every other day.

@Chuckles: Ha, my pharmacist asked me the very same thing. "I have to ask if you're pregnant to give you this." Me: "Uh no. I'm taking it TO get pregnant." Pharmacist: "Oh." I felt so weird. I agree, I kinda wish you'd said your other idea! :silly:

@Chuckles: I am so happy to read that you have a solid plan (medically) for this cycle ... That is great news! 😁 While it is understood that pharmacists must [legally] ask for any contraindications for prescribed medication, I'm sure the pharmacist could have asked in a more tactful manner. That must have been so unbelievably frustrating! 😖😠😤 With that stated, I appreciate your sense of humor! I wish you had replied with the former ... I would have loved to read about the pharmacist's reaction from your sarcasm! 😂

I'm starting our second medicated cycle and the RE wants me to start on estradiol before the trigger and continue for 14 days. And that's in addition to starting progesterone at 3dpo. So I just went to pick up the estradiol from Walgreens and the pharmacist was like, I just have to ask if you're pregnant. Which just made me feel crappy - i said, nope, definitely not pregnant. That's why I'm getting this stuff. But I did think about saying, yes but I thought shoving more stuff up my vagina for no reason sounded like a good idea.

@Spinny: Thank you soooooooo much for sharing! It is so difficult to make a concrete decision as whether or not to continue at any given point, but I am certain it is even more difficult after losses. DH and I had a plan that we would stop TTC in May as we want a #3 so badly but we are content with the 2 beautiful children we have; that was until I visited my new RE and figured out the problem wasn't unexplained 2ndary infertility, rather, immature ova. The RE has helped with a plan for further TTC which extends our "trying" to April 2020! He, of course, is supportive of our decisions and IF we choose to stop.

@Spinny: I feel you on the moving forward as a family of 3. Like I know we won't only ever be a family of 3, because we want to pursue adoption of some sort (embryo or from the state, since they can be a little more certain than standard adoption)... But I can't seem to find that peace, even though I do feel like some parts are definitely on standstill.

• How long have you been/were you TTC? A little over 2 years
• What interventions have you done/are doing? 3x clomid cycles, I have done 1 IUI cycle (femara, ovidrel) that was unsuccessful, I will start another IUI cycle next month.
• Reason for intervention? Unexplained secondary infertility
• Any successes? I've gotten pregnant twice in the last 2+ years but lost both around 10 weeks due to different chromosomal abnormalities.
• Current # of Children - 1 - my son is 3.5
• The most difficult part of the process? I had a breakdown during my first IUI cycle, no surprise it wasn't successful. I didn't anticipate the early morning monitoring appointments (clinic is an hour away) to be so stressful. I also am struggling with "letting go" and moving forward as a family of 3. I feel like life has been on hold for the last couple of years and I'm torn between wanting a second child and moving forward, it's not easy.

All the  to all the ladies trying. I always found my best support here on HB! There used to be an IF checkin thread that checked in weekly (maybe a long time ago) and I’m glad to see people connecting again!!

We did clomid, triggers, IUIs, all the basic testing, recurrent loss testing, karyotyping, hysteroscopy, metformin, progesterone ... I am sure stuff I am forgetting. I felt relatively lucky and still it was some of the loneliest times of my life. I have many memories of hard days burned into my brain.

If there’s anything I can ever do to support someone or talk about our experience let me know

@snarkybiochemist: Frustrating, isn't it?!?! I am always dumbfounded, myself. I am not a confrontational person so I now just thank them for their concern or advice (and all but swear at them in my head 😂). I know MOST people mean well and all but my sentiment to those with intrusive advice is: "It is not your body or life to monitor, so please keep all comments to yourself as I would never say such to or judge you." 🤷‍♀️

Right now no one outside of the HB community knows I am on injectables with TI as I am finding my family and friends can't understand why we don't "Give up," or "Leave it to God," or "Try to be content with our 2." I appreciate that you touched upon it.

Joining you all in support and a resource if I can be
It took a year for E and that was b/c I knew at 17 that I would likely need fertility treatments and I very luckily had doctors who listened to me and were proactive and I responded well to treatment.
I did all of the assorted infertility testing which confirmed PCOS and hypothyroidism. I did clomid once but it was starting to decrease my lining even after that so no more clomid for me. I did a femera cycle (5mg) and had 4 follicles which made both my doctor and I very nervous and she almost canceled the cycle. Then I had cysts and had to take a cycle off from meds so we tried naturally which did not result in a pregnancy but at least I ovulated in a reasonable time. I have had many annovulatory cycles in my life the longest being 90 days. My RE lowered my femera dose to 2.5mg and I had 1 really great looking follicle. My husband and I decided to convert that cycle to and IUI instead of just TI. It was successful and we now have 15 month old E. All of my cycles successful and not included a trigger shot, progesterone suppository support after O, metformin for the PCOS, synthroid for the hypothyroidism, and a handful supplements including vitamin D and CoQ10.
The hardest part for me was not having many people in real life who understood what infertility was like and how uncertain and frustrating it was.

• How long have you been/were you TTC? 25 Cycles

• What interventions have you done/are doing? I have done 4 rounds of Clomid, 1 round of Femara, and 1 round of Femara + Progesterone support.

• Reason for intervention? Unexplained secondary infertility. Our son was an oops baby. After 3 1/2 years of calendar/symptothermal/pull and pray birth control I found out I was 6 weeks pregnant 3 months into our marriage 😬🤷🏼‍♀️ from one miscalculated night.

• Any successes? Not a single repeatable positive (had a couple cycles where A test gave me hope, but the following 10 never confirmed anything.

• Current # of Children - 1, my son is coming up on 3

• The most difficult part of the process? The most difficult part is knowing you're doing what you're supposed to be doing; yet nothing is working out. The feeling like you're a failure when your body is failing you. Knowing that you have room in your heart, life, house to have a baby... Yet it doesn't happen. That's what sucks...

O and the ever ignorant people that tell you to quit trying and it will happen... Those people suck

@MountainBaby: when we first met with the RE, they had a bunch of testing that they start with to gather all information. DH had a sperm analysis, I had a ton of bloodwork, a HSG to make sure my tubes were not blocked and some other test that I can't remember the name of to make sure my uterus looked good. Once they had all of this information, they put a plan in place i.e., try oral meds with a trigger shot for 3 rounds and if nothing, add IUI for 3 rounds. The RE flat out told me "on average it takes 3-4 cycles on medication to get pregnant. I have no doubt that you will get pregnant, it is just a matter of when you get pregnant." We tried to just take it cycle by cycle and not worry about what if these 6 rounds didn't work, etc.

I hope you get all of your questions answered and get some good information. Good luck!

@MountainBaby: Hi, welcome to the board, as well as, the wild world of interventions for infertility!
To respond to your queries, DH & I visited our 1st RE 12 mos after TTC #3. I had prior testing through the OBGYN and she could not figure out WHY we weren't conceiving, however, since all of my tests came back perfect she told us to keep trying and we could get a referral to a RE at 11 mos along. I was 36 at the time. The RE ran all the same tests including AMH and I had a hysteroscopy to check that I did not have too much scar tissue from both of my c-sections. I came back clear. DH had a SA which he passed with flying colors. The RE stated that I should jump straight to IVF even though my AMH was awesome and hormones were in check. This did not sit well with DH or me. Three mos later, DH decided to leave AD Army and go into the reserves (He received an awesome job offer and his time was nearly up before he had to reup). We moved in with his parents for 5 mos. We had to become NTNP for that time. Upon moving into our new home, I started fertility massage, Chinese herbs, acupressure, acupuncture, and fertility Yoga ... none which were helping. I then went to see an new OBGYN who (with my urging) ran tests ALLLLL over again. He had us go 2 natural cycles before prescribing Clomid. I had 2 rounds of Clomid (50 then 100) unmonitored. (That stuff was horrid to me!) I asked for more tests and he had me go unmedicated for a month. He tracked my hormones (CD 3, 7, 15, and 21) and sent me for an HSG. All tests PERFECT again - which made TTC even more frustrating! He put me on Clomid (50) one more cycle before realizing that my body was not responding to it (I OV on my own, have regular cycles with a short AF.). I asked him for recommendations for 3 REs in the area (max 2 to 2-1/2 hours away.) He gave me 3. Two accepted my insurance, so I researched and selected my current RE (who I adore along with all of his staff). DH had his SA and the numbers were great. This time, they ran tests, performed U/S (plural), and then monitored me (bloodwork and U/S) for an entire unmedicated cycle. What was found is that my lining is beautiful but I OV from small follicles which means my ovum are probably immature (46 chromosomes instead of 23). The fix - Follistim to grow my follicles until I take a trigger (ovulation within 36 hours) and the Crinone suppositories after I OV (procedural). I am on my first injectables cycle now (day 3 of Follistim). The plan is 2 medicated TI cycles before looking at IUI. Then 4 IUI before looking at IVF.
Right now, I am less than a month away from turning 39, but I am staying hopeful that we have atleast a decent chance this cycle since we know what the problem is.

I hope my TTC with secondary infertility tale was a bit helpful - ask for referrals and recommendations but do your homework in finding a good specialist and ALWAYS push for tests as knowing (definitively) what is going go will allow you to generate a better TTC plan and save you some money in the end. 😉🙂

@MountainBaby: For us, this was handled one day at a time basically. We decided first to do some basic testing to see what was keeping us from getting pregnant. Then, with those results, we decided we'd start minimally invasive and more affordable (IUI with oral meds, trigger, timed intercourse). We stuck with IUIs for 3 tries because studies show that after 3, the chances of success fall instead of rise. After 3 IUIs, we were exhausted and wanted to try something more aggressive, but that decision wasn't mapped out in advance. We got there over time. It's what worked for us.

Us:
• How long have you been/were you TTC? We tried for 3 years before getting pregnant this past fall with our first.

• What interventions have you done/are doing? We did 3 IUIs, 2 IUI cycles were cancelled midcyle, and one round of IVF.

• Reason for intervention? Endometriosis plus, learned later, genetic abnormality with my eggs.

• Any successes? Just the current one.

• Current # of Children - Will be one if this pregnancy holds on to full term.

• The most difficult part of the process? How long it all freaking takes. Paying out of pocket for everything. Listening to my friend talk about how she'd love a fourth child while I'm there, knowing what we're going through. Feeling like a failure over and over and over ... Even being pregnant now, I spend every day waiting to hear that the fetus has stopped growing suddenly, just like our embryos did during IVF. The trauma sticks with you.

I'm interested in this thread because we're just about to start the process. I have a Drs appointment set up to ask questions in a few weeks. I'm particularly interested in knowing how you all came to your decisions about how much intervention to pursue. Did you follow all the doctors suggestions? did you push for more? hold back on some for medical/financial/other reasons?

• How long have you been TTC? 12 cycles

• What interventions have you done/are doing? none yet, I have an appointment with an OB to discuss first steps coming up

• Reason for intervention? (so far) unexplained infertility

• Any successes? no problems with first child, but no luck this go round

• Current # of Children - 1, just turned 2

• The most difficult part of the process? the uncertainty

I am mainly here to offer my support to you ladies who are still going through the process of TTC because I know how much it sucks. I am currently pregnant with my first and being induced Monday morning (February 4th) but want you all to know that I am here to listen/vent along with you because I had to go through similar things and know how much of a toll it can take on a person.

• How long have you been/were you TTC?
DH and I had been trying for about a year when we finally went to see an RE.

• What interventions have you done/are doing?
I did three rounds of Femara, two of which were combined with a trigger shot, but all three were unsuccessful and the fourth round of Femara with trigger shot we did an IUI and it was successful.

• Reason for intervention?
Unexplained Infertility. :bummed:

• Any successes?
Yes, the fourth round was successful but ultimately ended in a T21 diagnosis which resulted in a TFMR. I ended up getting pregnant on my own after the TFMR without fertility intervention.

• Current # of Children
I will have my first child in a few days!

• The most difficult part of the process?
Not sure I could really pick the most difficult as I think everything about it is difficult and sucks in general. The hope and anticipation, the stress we put ourselves through with testing, symptom spotting and thinking every little thing means we are or aren't pregnant. It is just awful and unfair, not to mention the costs that we incur in doing the interventions! Even though it took DH and I 1.5 years to conceive with fertility treatments, I know we were lucky in a way because obviously there are other ladies on here who have been trying for much longer than that and/or have had to have way worse interventions and/or pay out the ass for things that shouldn't be so damn expensive! I really feel for anyone that reaches out on this board and hope you all know we are all in this together and to help each other.

Thank you for responding @MrsKansas! I agree that there are so many emotions tied to TTC with infertility, but sometimes, the financial toll of testing, medications, and procedures makes things all that much more difficult (especially when a BFN shows up the same day a bill comes in the mail. 😕).

• How long have you been/were you TTC?
-- 2.5 years

• What interventions have you done/are doing?
-- We've done pretty much all testing available, two Clomid cycles, three Femara cycles, one cycle with Gonal F/Femara & IUI. To elaborate on the testing, we've done the "basic" infertility workup three times, karotype testing, hysteroscopy with polyp removal, cycle monitoring with natural and medicated cycles and probably other things I'm forgetting. I've wanted to do just injectables with IUI but my doctor refuses since I'm 26.

• Reason for intervention?
-- Unexplained infertility and PCOS. I have mild PCOS so it's more unexplained especially with the three losses.

• Any successes?
-- No success with fertility meds. My three losses were all from natural cycles.

• Current # of Children - 1 who is turning 4 in April :crying:

• The most difficult part of the process?
-- Besides the obvious emotional factor, I hate throwing money away on stuff that never seems to work.

Since I began this board, I will begin with my post:

• How long have you been/were you TTC?
-- 24 days short of 3 years TTC for our #3.
• What interventions have you done/are doing?
-- Testing (bloodword, scans, hysteoscopy, HSG), Clomid (3 cycles), a monitored natural cycle, now - 1st cycle of Follistim/Ovidrel with TI AND home ICI. After 2 tries with TI, we will move onto IUI.
• Reason for intervention?
-- Originally, unexplained secondary infertility... after a month of monitoring, it has been found I OV with immature ovum.
• Any successes?
-- Not yet (1 CP in Aug) in the last 3 years ... Hoping and praying for #3 this cycle.
• Current # of Children - 2 (One DD, one DS)
• The most difficult part of the process?
-- TTC with infertility elicits so many emotions, highs/lows, and frustrations due to the fact that EVERYTHING seems to be "out of my hands." *sighs*

I'm hoping more lovely ladies will share and commiserate.
