@greatauntie: this is a very old post but we did the clip (tongue tie only but deeper than they realized at first) and never were even recommended exercises. She had no issues, didn’t reattach and I’m glad I did it because after having two more kiddos, I realize how pronounced hers was!
@Mrsbells: ha, this is a super old post!! R is now 5.5. and I’m glad I did it then and havent had to worry about any speech issues!
@Elizabear: we had no issues with less recommending and then doing it! I’ve heard of people with push back but I’m glad I never had to think about it, except for this post!

My daughter had tongue and lip tie clipped - separately weeks apart and I don't really see any "con" except the torment of decision making and the waiting for the appointment and the anxiety leading up to it. I was a super anxious mom but looking back, it really was nothing. One moment and done! The worst part is how they put the baby in basically a baby straight jacket for the procedure.

Both my boys had posterior tongue ties and got them clipped when they were newborns. I really can’t think of any “cons” to be honest. I didn’t want to take a chance with speech issues later in life.

@birdofafeather: we had DS's tongue tie clipped. It was a mild tie but was affecting his latch. We did it when he was still a newborn. It healed super quickly. I think doing it early is better ans then you can put it behind you

@greatauntie: I would ask for an ENT referral. I agree about someone with expertise. My son is 3 now but he had a significant tie that was clipped when he was 4 days old. I think the ENT just had me swipe under his tongue before every feeding to prevent scar tissue for a week? It was over quick and made him mad and awake enough to work on his latch. Your ped should know someone experienced to recommend.

My lactation consultant told me that whether the exercises need to be done or not is actually controversial. We did them to be safe - he didn't like it but it only took like 15 seconds and my son wasn't all that upset by them. Pediatricians by nature distrust dentists, but what's most important is that the provider - whether it be a dentist or ent - has lots of experience correcting tongue ties. The more experienced the provider is, the more likely it is to be helpful. We had great luck with an experienced pediatric dentist.

Getting LO's tongue tie fixed completely saved our breastfeeding relationship, and also helped his very severe reflux. It was a huge turning point for us. After the procedure, which barely seemed to bother him, he's gone from below the 10th to above the 70th percentile in weight and really thrived. And knock on wood, no more mastitis and far fewer clogged ducts for me.

My ped says there is a 30%chance of clipping helping baby. I was told she has a small mouth and very tight jaws in addition. I would go ahead with it but they said I had to do these exercises 5 times a day in which I press down in her mouth very hard or it may grow back and then, with scar tissue be harder on her to remove again. My ped did not recommend it be done by a dentist as he’s seen lasers that have gone too deep causing problems. All I keep getting is vague “no guarantees” answers. Did anyone else have to do, what seem to me, harsh exercises after?

When my LO had her tongue and lip ties clipped around 2.5 months, she wasn't really using a pacifier at that time (because I was trying really hard to get her to breastfeed and having issues doing that, and my LC has said to stay away from pacis and bottles). But eventually when I switched to EPing and bottlefeeding, I did start offering a paci....she didn't get into it until around 6 months, but then she really loved it!

We used the Mam brand--just because she was already 6 months and the soothers were for newborns.

So, Sweet P had her tongue and lip tie procedure done 2 weeks ago. Since then she has refused the pacifier. :/

She had liked pacifiers every since her time in the NICU, although she couldn't keep those big green ones in her mouth and spit them out all the time. Just one week before her tongue tie procedure we tried the Tommy Tippee pacifiers and she COULD keep them in her mouth and were so helpful for self-soothing, which she definitely needs help with! She will let me put the Tommy Tippee one in her mouth and she plays with it a bit but won't suck it. I'm wondering if maybe we need to try other brands again?

Anyway, a few questions-

1. If your child had the tongue tie procedure done, did they ever take a pacifier again? If so, how long did it take?

2. Did you use the same pacifiers you did before or did you have to use a new brand? If so, which brand did you use?

I second bodywork. I was told it's really important, and so we took LO to 2 craniosacral therapy sessions after her laser release. That's all she needed, to release some tension built up from tensing and overcompensating with a restricted mouth.

Remember LO has never felt her mouth work like this, not even in the womb, so it will take a few days to get the hang of it. Try and be patient. I found taking a nice warm bath and nursing/ feeding in the bath was very soothing for my LO as she recovered.

@Mrs. Pinata: the best way we found to burp him was laying tummy down on our thighs and lightly drumming on his back. He wasn't prone to spitting up tho. E is a little more prone to spitting up. The best way to burp him is our feet up on the couch with our knees bent, resting E tummy on our thighs and burp. That way he was still upright but the pressure was great enough to get the burp out. I second what PP says about the chiropractor they are a huge help for all kinds of issues!

@Mrs. Pinata: Yes I definitely think a cranial-sacral massage would be very similar. I would give that a go and see if it helps.

The Chiro might also be more help now that the tie has been released. We saw the Osteo twice before the release but it kept pulling things back out of alignment. We saw him once after the release to re do things and never had to take her back.

@AprilFool: That sounds amazing! We have taken her to a chiropractor and I feel like that's helped, but she didn't have burping techniques. I will need to look to see if we have osteopaths here. Would that be similar to someone doing cranial-sacral massage I wonder? That's often recommended as well for fussy/reflux babies.

@Mrs. Pinata: Maybe they are only popular in Australia? Haha. An Osteopath uses manipulation to move things back into place but it's very gentle, like a massage. The closest would probably be a Chiropractor if you can't see an Osteopath.

@Mrs. Pinata: We saw a difference immediately but LO was already 6 weeks old. How old is your LO? They say it can take 2 weeks to relearn how to feed.

The Dr recommended seeing an Osteopath and probiotics, both of which I was already doing. I think both of these greatly helped and might help your LO with her burping. We had seen Osteo twice before getting it cut and that's when our feeding was usually best.

So, Sweet P got her tongue AND lip tie released Tuesday afternoon. We got it done by laser, which I'm glad for.

Anyway, Tuesday night was horrid (4 straight hours of screaming after numbing meds wore off), but since then I feel like she's been doing OK with the pain. We've been doing Tylenol religiously every 6 hours and some diluted clove oil recommended by the Dr. for pain and disinfecting.

Anyway, how long before you saw a difference. It hasn't been 48 hours yet, but she's definitely still having difficulty feeding (which we expected and know is normal), but is also very screamy when she needs to burp (which is new).

I know we're still in the 'recovery' phase, so it's not like I expect feedings to be great or her fussiness to go away yet, but I'm wondering how long it took your baby to get better. I'm really, really hoping and praying this helps her, but right now I'm TIRED and wondering when it might get better??

@MrsDragon: ah ok. I ask because I was pretty sure/thought I had thrush as well when LO was small and we were dealing with latch issues. I may have (I took diflucan) but what I think it really was was vasospasms, caused from LO's poor latch and his clamping. Taking magnesium daily helped that sooo much. Just something I thought I would mention in case it helps you! :)

@hilsy85: The pain is more like a scratchy sunburned/chafed kind of feeling. She's definitely still sucking really hard and compressing tight even with a deep latch. Sometimes my nipples look a bit lighter but never the areola.

@MrsDragon: looks like there is definitely some improvement! It will also take time for her to learn her tongue's full range of motion, so don't get discouraged if she's not keeping her tongue out while latching on yet--she will! Just keep doing the exercises! She is ADORABLE!

Also, when you say that you're having pain--is it like a throbbing pain that comes and goes after you nurse? And do you ever notice that your nipples/areola are slightly lighter after she unlatches?

I also used APNO and loved that stuff!

@MrsDragon: Is your LO being treated for oral thrush? One of the LC's I saw wondered if A's latch was off because thrush was making her tongue itchy!

@Kemma: They thought I had it back the first time I went to the LC at the start of the month, but just a mild case so they gave me APNO and any scratchy feeling went away pretty quick, but my nipples and areola stayed red. But that also coincided with me REALLY noticing her compressing and sucking hard, so I chalked it up to latch pain. Then a few days ago I went to see the public health nurses, mentioned the pain had gotten even worse since the day before that, and they took a guess that I had thrush. Especially because I started getting the stabbing needle pain. :( Right now it's still a scratchy/burning pain but the redness on the areola seems to be subsiding a bit!

On the downside -- found out today that her weight is off the curve it was on. She lost a few ounces this week and didn't gain enough overall this month. I'm hoping it was just due to one bad, engorged, her getting frustrated and falling asleep weekend with the shield.
