I have had these for several years and they're awful. I too have bad post nasal drip and allergies which is what I've attributed them to. My trick for getting them out is using 2 Qtips, one on each side of the crevice and apply pressure till they pop out. Bc the Qtips are dry the stones stick to them and then I throw the Qtips away and get new ones until they're all out. I check my throat when I'm in my car (best lighting) every few weeks and see what's brewing back there. These are by far the grossest things ever but you are not alone.

@mrs. wagon - the post nasal drip theory sounds like you could be right on! My husband gets huge ones, and he tears apart his tonsils trying to get them out, and he has pretty constant post nasal drip. I have it all the time too. Makes sense! I am so cautious about how my breath smells because you're right, I can tell when people have them and must not realize it!

@mrs. wagon: I feel like my crevices are 5 feet deep. And I have year round post nasal drip. This is also gross but at anytime during the day I can cough phlegm up, a lot of it. It is horrible. I am always choking on it. Ok I am done being gross lol.

@Mrsbells: @tororojo: @dagret: @anonysquire: @chopsuey119: @oahujeni: yayyyyy I'M NOT ALONE!!!!!! Just wait til Wagon Sr. hears this. He thinks I'm a freak. When I have a big session I like to leave them in the sink before I wash them down the drain and gross him out. Not a lot gets to him but tonsil stones definitely do. Haha.

So I've come to the conclusion that it comes from post nasal drip drainage collecting in the deep crevices in your tonsils and solidifying into the lovely stinking balls of crap. The reason I think this is correct is because I tend to get them more when I'm sick and during allergy season. I think a reason why some people used to get them and don't anymore is because they now take allergy meds that help with the post nasal drip. I get very lazy about allergy meds so I still get them like crazy.

I also think a lot of people have them but don't realize it because sometimes I smell peoples' breath and think, that's definitely tonsil stones!

I didn't realize I had such deep crevices in my tonsils until I started poking around with tools. I have smaller crevices I can get stones out of by squeezing, but others require tools. I'm always afraid that I'm going to drop a tool down my throat though, ever since I saw a stories of the ER show about a girl who got a pen stuck in her throat gagging herself to throw up. :(

I feel REALLY REALLY bad for those reading this who have never heard of tonsil stones. It must be so gross.

Ugh I HATE these things. I've had them since I can remember, and try to get them out every few days just by pushing gently on the side of the crevices with my finger where I know they always are. I've been told by drs that tonsil stones don't exist and it's just food build up, but I've also googled it and it makes me feel better to know so many other people have this problem too! I read about getting your tonsils out might help the issue but I'm not ready to take that step yet!

Hello fellow tonsil stoners! I get them every time I get sick and then I end up picking my poor tonsils til they are bleeding. I know that is gross. Last Sunday I was starting to get sick Andy tonsils got huge and I saw some stones poking out and I ended up getting 15 small stones out. So gross, I'm sorry! But I usually just squeeze them out.

Ugh, I get them too and they are SO GROSS and make your breath stink something horrible. I notice I get more when I have a cold or a lot of nasal drainage. I hate when you can feel a big honking one back there and it won't come out. DH's cousin's wife shoots out her husband's with a WaterPik. That's love. Because I don't know that I would do that for someone who's not my child.

@mrs. wagon: Umm I totally know what you mean about coughing them up...that happens to me in the middle of the night sometimes. I don't know if I'm talented enough to clean off crevices but I will try tonight! And maybe buy special tools tomorrow if it's still there. :)

ok. Thank you. I have even heard from ENTs that these "don't exist"... that it's just food stuck back there... etc. I have had these since I was little. I've done so much research and I'm even considering getting my tonsils out (they get infected a lot every winter anyway). Every doctor who has looked in my throat has said "wow, those are some big tonsils." But I've heard that sometimes it doesn't solve the tonsil stone problem anyway.

The two methods of removing tonsil stones that have worked for me are using a monoject syringe filled with water (it's not a needle, it's a plastic tip) and using a tweezer man tool for blackheads. It's got a small and big curved loop tip, and I use the small tip. There are two deep crevices I have in each tonsil that I can get at easily, but I know there are others I can't reach because sometimes I'll cough one up when I know I've just cleaned the crevices out.

I'm so glad I'm not alone. :) Googling and finding comments from other tonsil stone sufferers makes me laugh so hard. Such a gross thing to have!!!!

Has anyone ever gotten a tonsil stone? It's a hard, white deposit stuck on your tonsil that can be caused by food collecting, drainage from a cold, or bacteria on your tongue. Don't google pictures or you'll want to throw up. I'm getting over a cold and have a massive stone on one of my tonsils and I can't get it off! I get them occasionally and can usually scrape it off with my nails or a q-tip, but this one is stuck. I tried gargling with Coke, which is kind of painful. :) Any tips or tricks? You can also just say "eewwww, grosssss"...
