Our son wears undies during the day and puts on a pull-up at night and he's typically fine with it, but every now and then he'll randomly refuse one or the other. He'll say I don't want underwear or I don't want pull-ups and it will be this thing for a few days for some oddball reason.

I don't know if it will work for you, but we told him if he didn't wear his underwear, he'd have to go back in a diaper like a baby. It was his choice. He was like NOPE, UNDERWEAR IT IS.

Another suggestion could be a transition of sorts where you put underwear on her and then put a pull-up on top. Then over time just skip the pull-up, since she's used to having the underwear on first.

I kind of feel that maybe she's not confident enough to go with underwear during the day...my son was similar, so what ultimately worked was to pick a day when we wouldn't be going anywhere to practice. It helped boost his confidence and then he was fine in pullups only at night once he realized that he could do it.

Could you get a different design (brand/character/color) and tell her these are special pull ups only for night time?

I like to blame these kinds of transitions on other things. He seems to take it better when the pull up says it’s only for night then when I say the pull up is for night.

@Iced Tea: Yes, I usually get him dressed right away in the morning after he uses the potty, so pull up comes off with the pjs. If the pull-up is dry I might re-use it :silly:

@Iced Tea: yes I do. it's definitely gotten easier than at first when there was a lot of screaming over "no underpants! no underpants!". I usually get him dressed right away and do it then, and even if he won't go pee right away he'll do it pretty quickly because he really doesn't want an accident. also I find it easier to use an actual diaper (we have some to use up) or the huggies pull-ups with the tear away sides so it's fast to get it off.

if it was a big battle that didn't subside after a few days, I would probably just get rid of all pull-ups (and get a waterproof sheet/mat for the bed so bed changes are easy if there's an accident!)

@bhbee: @macintosh: So do you force them to remove the pull-up in the morning? She usually wakes up dry and wants to keep wearing it. The only natural and easy time for a switch is bath time, which doesn’t occur until evening. How can I encourage the switch without turning it into a battle?

I do night time only and had to just say no. Like put them out of sight where they can’t reach if you have to. He has started complaining less during the day but would still happily do his business in a pull-up or diaper anytime. We’re too lazy to pull the night ones yet :silly:

DS still wears pull ups for nights and naps but I’m about to stop using them for naps. He’s normally dry in the morning and he doesn’t really care if he’s wearing underwear or pull-ups that much. I don’t see any reason why you can’t institute a night time only rule.

My 4 year old still won't give up pull ups at night despite being dry most mornings. We do them only at night and reuse them if dry. So my vote is yes, underwear during day and pull ups at night. I'm in no hurry to deal with pee sheets in the middle of the night. :silly:

So my three year old wants to continue wearing pull-ups, even though she has been reliable for a month now. I am guessing the easiest solution would be to get rid of all of them so that they simply aren’t an option at all. But if there’s another way, I’d like to continue to put her in pull-ups at night and do underwear all day. She occasionally wakes up crying, which triggers a pee. But wearing pull-ups all the time irritates her skin. Would you try to convince your child to use them at night only, or get rid of them altogether?

We used Gerber-- they run small, which is great for my skinny guy. He's 27.5 months and he isn't likely to move up from the original 18 month sizes we bought any time soon. They don't absorb much -- but I preferred that for learning purposes. Until I felt like I could trust him, he wore those plastic covers on top. They were crinkly and he'd sweat a lot, so he didn't wear them anymore than necessary.

Blueberry and Imse Vimse are pretty comparable. Imse Vimse seem to hold a little more, but are more bulky. Your daughter sounds similar in build to Lorelei-- the Blueberrys are a little better fit, but no issues with Imse Vimse even though they are only snug at the waist and legs (then they sort of baloon out a little).

I liked the imse vimse ones, they are thick enough to hold a small to medium sized pee. They are bulkier than standard underpants (obviously) but not terrible. The last kid I used term with had skinny legs with a tummy and they fit fine. The problem was that they are around $18 a pair which is expensive if you need q bunch. We bought 3 pair and kept her in underwear at home and those when we were out and about. They are uncomfortable when wet whereas this child wasn't bothered by wetness in pull ups and literally couldn't tell she had peed in disposable diapers.

Hi! We had stopped cloth diapers over the last year. But we plan on starting in the next week with the new little one.
So with that change we decided to try cloth training pants for our middle child (she turned 2 in January).
Any suggestions of kinds? She is almost in a size 24 months but the waist on most of that size is a little big. She has quite small thighs with a larger toddler belly. Most of her pants sit on her hips.
