My girl loves tunnels and trains and bridge pieces and doesn't really play with those extra pieces like trees or houses so the ikea one is perfect. They see heavy use. They're just wooden, and so far they're like new. I expect them to hold up. </p> <p>That PB set is cute - it has a lot of fun stuff that the ikea one doesn't, so I might get it just for that reason. If I were you, I might get that one, and then get ikea stuff to add on in terms of more tracks and such. We bought the figure 8 track just to see if he liked trains enough to buy a bigger set and it's been a hit! It's super awesome quality and we've had it over a year. I see no difference between the ikea set and the other majors brands that I've seen/played with that friends and family have. We have some plastic ones as well, and both DS1and DS2 tend to throw the tracks, which obviously causes them to break and send little plastic pieces flying. They're literally the only toy we've ever been able to pass on bc all of his others have practically been destroyed. Lol</p> <p>ETA: I was even really sad that he quite playing with them bc they made a batman geotrax series! We're total comic nerds so I really wanted to play with them. It is affordable and can be used with Thomas trains. Starting getting them when he was 2 and asked for them every birthday and Christmas until he was 6! It was so great to be able to just get filler sets &amp; new buildings to add to his collection. I recommend a wood set but be careful of the small parts. Most large ones like ours have small parts like little gates and people. I stored those away until my son was closer to 3 per the recommended age. I gave it to him around 20 months for Christmas.</p> <p>We were gifted a plastic little tikes one that's actually really fun too. It just wasn't a table kind so it's on the floor sort of in the way.
