So we are going to be away from home this Christmas so we are hauling out our little (6 foot) fake tree (we normally do a fresh cut Christmas-tree zilla LOL) - it is bright white though, which really doesn't go with my decoration theme - so I am trying to break up the white with ribbon ... how much ribbon (it is 2" wide and wired) would you get? I bought 200 feet already 🙈 Picture of our very white tree with our previous bright colour ornaments attached!

We're doing a tree without lights to remove the cord risk. LO will be 10 months (very active...) So we'll just watch him. I also plan on coming up with something to secure it, but we have to wait for the tree for that

Not sure if you can tell from the photo, but we chose a very short tree last year, and set it up on a desk. We had an 11 month old at the time, and I knew a tree on the floor would not work. I think we'll do a normal tree this year, but the desk tree was perfect for a curious baby.

We normally get a real tree, but I got a cheap little artificial pre lit thing from Walmart this year. I put it up today, without ornaments, and M has been interested, but so far, so good. We're not planning on putting any fragile ornaments on it this year, though. I think I'm just gonna let D make a lot of paper ornaments and use the soft ones we have.

DD was ~15 months when we put up the tree. It was not an issue-- we told her only looking, no touching, and that was that. We didn't do a gate around it, just our usual shatterproof ornaments. I think it was so magical to her, she knew it was something different and the rules were no touching lol

DS will be 20 months when we put up the tree later this week and I think it'll be ok! He's more into things than DD but for the most part, follows boundaries.

For now, I am doing/have done the tree/decoration setup when they are asleep in bed so they just wake up to it all decked out with everything in place. I don't want them seeing me touch everything and getting ideas. Later when they're older, I'll let them decorate with me :)

@josina: I won't put the presents under it until Christmas Eve, but that's what my parents do too so I'm not used to having presents under the tree ahead of time anyway. LO was 8 months last Christmas and would just look at the tree. This year I know he will be touching! So I'm not putting anything breakable on it just to be safe.

Our LO is not so good at No quite yet, although he's learning. :) I will def. keep breakables up, but I'm also worried about gifts staying wrapped! Especially since Friday we're going to teach him how to open them, and then Saturday tell him he can't. I guess the easy thing to do is not to put them under the tree but I love seeing them all there.

DS is just shy of 15 months and into EVERYTHING. Very into ripping things off branches at the park and what not and DH says when he was a toddler, he definitely knocked over the Christmas tree, so we're going to skip it! I'm thinking of getting a small potted tree to decorate for our formal dining table or get a big evergreen centerpiece of some kind. We'll get poinsettias for the doorway, wreath for our door, and maybe get some fresh pine swag/lights for the mantle. No reason not to make things festive in a more childproof way.

Our tree is in the formal living room and DS just stays in the regular living room with us 95% of the time. Ever since he was a baby, he doesn't cross the threshold that's between our kitchen and formal living unless he asks us to come with him so we've been safe so far!

We change the theme colors every few years or so and keep our family/old ornaments up every time. This year we're re-using our blue and silver theme, so the tree bulbs, skirt, garland, etc are all in those colors, as are the majority of the decorations around the house.

DH has this huuuuge freaking fake ficus tree (that I hate), so maybe he'll get his very own bird-themed ficus Festivus tree and I'll keep getting him new bird ornaments for his 9-foot-tall love. Bah!

@Crystal: Same here. We made an ornament each year for the family growing up, and my mom kept a set of three for herself, me, and my sister, as well as buying one that represented us, so I had 25 years X2 worth of ornaments coming into the relationship. DH and I now buy them as we go that represent "us' more, but definitely still predominantly me on there.
