We had no reason to move our son but we did as we travel a lot and he outgrew his travel crib and would not sleep in a bed in a strange place. So we got an IKEA twin with a rail and talked it up with books and made the move on a Friday night 2 months ago. He is literally in love with his bed and there has been no negative impact on his sleep besides taking a little longer to fall asleep the first night. Knock on wood he has never gotten out of it during nap or night time. We will do a queen when he's older but the twin is a great size. Mostly it was affordable and we can still get in it with him. He plays in it and 'reads' in it and puts us to bed in it too ha

I was TERRIFIED of ditching the crib. We waited until 3 years + 1 month. And probably would've waited longer except I'm pregnant again and I wanted to get her moved in case it was a shit show and took us months to get back on track.

In the crib she slept great. Went right down, never tried to climb out, never fussed. I was worried when we moved her to a normal bed she'd just not stay in it and would pound on the door and would wander her room and just be crazy.

So far (knock wood) at about 2 weeks in it is going great for us! We moved her to a queen size bed on a platform frame. I felt like I did not want her on the floor because I was worried it would feel more like a fun bouncy mat than a bed. I wanted that elevation. I got a bed frame for $120 on wayfair, so it wasn't a big expense (we already had the mattress). I got bumpers from amazon to minimize the chance of her falling out (https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01DTBFB5U/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o02_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1). We let her pick out her own sheets and quilt and got her all hyped about it for the week before, how exciting it was to move to a big bed, how comfy it would be, how it would be just the same for sleeping, etc.

And no issues. She's gotten out of it on her own exactly once-- last night-- only because she dropped one of her animals on the floor and she climbed down to get it then climbed right back up. She treats it just like she did her crib for night.

I will say, we've only tried one nap in it and she didn't want to do it. But she doesn't really nap anyways so not a big deal for us.

My child was and is not a great sleeper and is very stubborn. With that said, we moved her into a queen.

In our situation, we had a queen bed and her crib jammed into her room already. So when she would wake up early often DH or I would come in and cuddle her back to sleep in the bed anyway. She started screaming bloody murder when we put her in the crib, so we started letting her sleep in the bed. Worked for a few days then she started getting up over and over again, so we ended up putting her back in the crib (which we never removed since baby sister would need it soon). A few months later we did it again and it stuck but occasionally DH will still have to sleep in there with her.

So I vote big bed.

We transitioned her to a twin size bed due to space, but if space was not an issue then full size bed for sure! She can use it for a long time and more room for those early morning snuggles.

We took off the rail to make a toddler bed and it's been a great decision for us. Since it's still basically the exact same thing as before, just now a "bed" instead of a "crib", her sleep was not disrupted in any way. I prefer not to get into bed with her and start habits like that, so the small size works in our favor.

I wouldn't have changed anything - full bed and at 2.75 yo, he wasn't climbing out yet. He handled it like a champ and I have no regrets. We didn't use a box spring and he was really excited about his big boy bed.

I would be cautious about your plan being to get in his bed because eventually this habit might get old and it's SO much harder to break things without the confines of the crib. I personally would be more inclined to address the 5 AM wake-ups in the crib (OK to Wake clock, etc) before moving him and allowing him that freedom. Although I know @jape14: moved when sleep had kind of gone insane and it did eventually flush itself out, but the transition wasn't as easy as ours was.

Is your son an escape artist in general? We moved my daughter to a queen at 2.5 and it was easy. We already had the bed so it made sense to use the Queen - lots of space if one of us ends up in there!
However my son (2 and still in crib) will be a disaster I think and we will keep crib as long as possible. He can climb out of the lowest setting so now he essentially has a floor bed inside the crib frame (his frame goes really low). But also set up (for future and sister's occasional use) is the IKEA daybed. I love it! Looks nice, the daybed frame helps make it reasonable for me to lay down in it with him (vs falling out of a regular twin with no backing), and great storage underneath if you need it. It's great if you don't have space for a bigger bed. We can also all 4 sit in it for story time.

@MrsLonghorn: They do make a toddler bed size one, but we figured we'd move to a twin since we had a spare twin mattress.

Also, thanks for indulging me - I don't know why we are so paralyzed by this decision. I think it is fear of ditching the crib. If I don't decide on a bed plan, then we can't actually get rid of the crib! :silly:

We have a twin floor bed in a Privacy Pop tent and everyone in the family loves it. Its plenty big enough to cuddle up in and when we close up the flap it gives him the enclosed feeling of his tent, he naps and sleeps the same overnight, etc. We did have to lock him in his room for a bit but now he just waits for us to get him and sings to himself.

Poll time!

DS is turning 3 soon, and shows no sign of climbing out of his crib (knock on wood), but does like the idea of sleeping on the floor and has asked to do it a few times. I'm tired of spending 5am wake-ups with him in the glider, so I'm thinking about switching him to a bed soon where we can both cuddle lying down instead of crammed into a chair and hurting my back.

Question 1 is whether or not we really want to do this (my back says 'yes' but I'm scared of what will happen at nap/bedtime...)
Question 2 is what size mattress to use, regardless of when we decide to make the switch.

If space and money was not an issue, what would you have done? And when would you have done it? (multiple choices allowed)
