@Beebug: yeah I know what you mean. I'm sure it depends. My DS's bite is not severe, it's more a slight underbite that the dentist feels can be corrected in this way. He said it's a rare case he would suggest it, but my DS fits the case. I'm certainly not advocating that we all let our kids keep pacis. But i am interested in saving some $$ if its as simple as letting him to go bed with the paci for a while longer. :-) Curious what your BIL would say if he saw my sons bite.

Really though? Wouldn't the benefits of cutting it now outweigh that one "potential" reason, especially since it can be corrected later on? I don't really see how paci use could correct it enough? Hmmm. I'm a skeptic, lol.

BIL is a dentist, going to throw that one at him!

@stargal: haha I know my DS is gonna be so excited tonight when he gets his beloved "bee kee" back at bedtime.
@MamaBehr: wow 4! That is pretty old. I would imagine it would be lots harder for a 4 yr old to part with a paci than a toddler. Or maybe not.
@autumnlove: I was actually sad that my efforts were for nothing! But oh well, better the binky now than headgear later, haha...
@cascademom: hope everything checks out ok for your LO!

I've been wanting to wean him off of it at a little over 12 months. I need to get him to the dentist anyway since our peds recommended he see a dentist earlier than 2 years old because my dental history.

That's great! I was so nervous about getting yelled at because both of mine still use a paci. I always thought the magic age was two, but our dentist said to be sure she was done by four!

Take him/her to the dentist first!

I weaned my 22 month old off his binky last month because I didn't want him to be two and walking around with his binky hanging out of his mouth while talking in full sentences. Plus I was concerned about orthodontics.

Well fast forward to today, when the pediatric dentist examines DS and says to me, "does E use a paci?" To which I proudly replied,"nope we are all done." His reply, "well I'm going to tell you to give it back to him!" Apparently DS has an underbite that can potentially be corrected by further use of a paci, or else his jaw may grow funny and he will have to get braces later in life.

Definitely wasn't expecting that one! DS just had his greatest wish come true :-). So take your toddlers to the dentist :-)
