@Mrs. Bee: here's the issue with uniforms in New York public schools: legally parents have the right to opt out. Our former superintendent tried introducing uniforms to curb gang activity and bullying but too many parents opted out. So the only children wearing the uniforms were the poorer children who were given the clothes.

I love uniforms! I went to a public school that had us wear proper uniforms and it was so nice. I was really sad when they went to a non-uniform dress code. One of the high schools I went to had a stupid dress code, you could only wear khaki, black, or white, no patch pockets on the pants, and you couldn't wear open toe-open heel shoes (?). It was stupid. I'd rather have a formal uniform or none at all.

I wore a uniform to school from age 3 until I graduated at 17. I freaking LOVED it! I didn't have to think about what to wear in the morning...just get up and go.

My school had really strict regulations about shoes, haircuts, accessories, jewellery etc., so that prevented students using those things to show off.

My school's philosophy was that it shouldn't be what you wear that makes you stand out.

Love uniforms!!!! I went to a private high school and wore a uniform for the four years - it was so wonderful to not have to worry about what I was going to wear every day. Just get up, throw the skirt and polo shirt on, decide whether or not I needed the sweater, and away I went. LOVED IT.

All schools in Australia and the UK wear uniforms - whether they're private or not. I love it, no fights about what to wear, no issues with kids looking different, and hello cost savings! Uniforms aren't cheap, but it's a heck of a lot cheaper than buying an entire wardrobe! :-)

I went to a school with uniforms from k-12 and I hope my LOs can go to one too, or at least have a strict dress code policy. It makes it so much easier in the morning.

And, in my experience, the things like hair/shoes/backpacks/etc were never an issue. No one cared what shoes you had. I also think bullying, as a whole, was barely noticeable at my school. Maybe teasing but not bullying. So maybe it depends on the school and their policies too.

I'm a huge fan of uniforms. I worked in a public school system that had uniforms and I thought they were great. I suppose they are a little limiting, but I figure kids have all weekend to express themselves in clothes if they want. At school the focus should be on academics, and eliminating clothing competition is a good step in that direction.

LO's preschool has uniforms and, as a parent, I really love it. They were a little more expensive than the rest of his clothes, but they've held up well and it is so easy to get him ready to go in the morning.

@.twist.: sorry, just seeing this. I hated it because it was done for gang/safety issues. Our backpacks had to be clear. There was no sense of privacy. And now that I think about it, money had some to do with my dislike also. We were poor, and I could never get the nicer uniforms. And shoes were a HUGE deal. If you weren't wearing nice, name brand shoes, you were a nobody. It was the only way you could stand out and I remember being really bummed that I couldn't get the 'nice' shoes. Whereas when I was in a high school that didn't have a uniform it was easier to blend in (thrift stores, second hand on eBay, etc.) . But mostly it was the fact that we had no privacy, and really no way of expressing ourselves because our school was SO strict and limited everything.

I always thought I'd be ok with uniforms, until a few weeks ago, when we briefly looked at a house in a zone that had an elementary school with uniforms. I really love letting DS have his own style and I love letting him express himself appropriately with his own taste. It made me a little sad to think about for elementary school.

I think I prefer it for middle school.

I like uniforms! I remember when I was a kid I wished I went to a school with uniforms. It made it easier to get dressed, but like many others said - there were still other things that were in style like hair styles, hair accessories, shoes, socks etc.. But at least it would feel more manageable financially if you wanted to only splurge on those items for your kids.

I doubt we'll be able to afford a school for our kid(s) that requires uniforms.

I don't like the schools with just stringent dress codes: "must wear khakis/chinos, and a polo" with no other rules. The private school that my friends growing up went to had rules like that and they hated it. There were some really weird/dumb rules and it would have been easier if they just had a uniform. Too many kids got in trouble unintentionally for breaking a dress code rule.

@locavore_mama: From what I understand about this school, the only time they have to wear their formal uniforms are for special occasions. Concerts, trips, assemblies, etc. Everyday school is a sweater/polo and khaki's or skirts.

@.twist.: yeah, our two options of elementary schools are either rated a 6 or a 3. There is no way on this earth we would ever send her to the 3. The 6 is like a 10% chance - and that's only if something horrible happened.

Also, my husband went to private school and he said he loved wearing uniforms. They didn't have to worry about kids wearing inappropriate clothing or gang colors/signs.

I was homeschooled for most of my school years, but I did attend a private academy for 3 years and we had uniforms. It made junior high so much easier haha! It was also really nice not to have to think in the mornings about what you wanted to wear -- you could just go on autopilot.

Our LO's will probably be homeschooled for elementary but, after that, the school we are considering at this point (despite it being far down the road!) requires uniforms.

@mediagirl: haha yea, I can't afford a private school but I am hoping we can afford this charter. DH isn't on board 100%, but I'm trying to convince him. At least L is on the wait list now and when the time comes to decide which school he goes to, at least he has the option to go there, whether we choose it or not.

Looking at the school ratings though? Ugh, his designated public school is 5.4/10 and this charter is 8.8/10. HUGE difference for successful education.
