@Cole: so frustrating especially for people who don't have the option to get vaccinated :-/

@Mrs. Pen: @gentlelunette: it's scary when our babies are too young. Makes me nervous about going places, too. And 73?!??? mumps cases, yikes.

There are 73 confirmed cases of the mumps in Toronto. I'm freaking out. I have an 8 week old baby and am honesty worried about taking her out in public.

This is so scary to me. My sister is one of those people who can't get immunizations (well, she can but she can't build antibodies so it's useless) and she relies on herd immunity. I'm in Michigan and she's supposed to visit in a few weeks. I hope it doesn't get too crazy.

ETA- I do acknowledge though that sometimes you can get these diseases even after being immunized but certainly immunizing statistically helps the population as a whole.

Anyone else feeling freaked out? My son's not old enough for the MMR. I believe it's now up to eight cases in Minneapolis and two in Michigan. There are also outbreaks in Europe. Wtf. With travel being so easy these days, I'm hoping this doesn't get out of hand. More than it is anyway. 😢

I did at my last appointment (28 wks). I wasn't entirely thrilled about it, & I feel like I've had many TDAP shots, but also heard the latest guidance is each pregnancy, so reluctantly got it done. I will say that this time it hurt like crazy for several days after. I'm no pansy, but I could barely move my arm the next day & ended up icing my shoulder that night. Should've done that sooner. :bummed:

yes - first time in the hospital after birth, this time my OB wanted me to get it between certain weeks near the end to try to maximize immunity for the baby. I'm guessing with more cases popping up they want to do whatever they can to help.

My understanding is yes. I had gotten it right before getting pregnant with my first (knowing we were trying) and this time, while pregnant with twins my provider suggested I get it again. Her comment was that while I didn't need it, it was the best way to get the vaccine to the babies.

Oh man that's it right! "Pfizer, the sole manufacturer, had revenues of nearly $4 billion from its Prevnar vaccine line last year, about double what it made from high-profile drugs like Lipitor and Viagra, which now face generic competitors." That sucks that they are the sole manufacturer of Prevnar!
