@JennyPenny: it doesn't have the power save, but the only time I've had issues with the battery is when it inadvertently gets left on all day. I leave it on the charger by my bed all night tho. I think the power save would be a nice feature, but I would pay too much extra $$$ for it (same with 2 way talk!)

@LBee: Yep, he is and I so wish we had a video monitor already. For the most part he hasn't yet figured out he can get out of bed without us, but I suspect that won't last for long. We'll need to get something regardless for when we have 2...

We use the Motorola video monitor. Just a warning - the two way talking freaks the hell out of T.

@peaches1038: Nice! The power save/sound limit thing is something I definitely want, but haven't seen many video monitors listing that feature. Maybe they have it but don't mention it?

@bees_knees: I saw the new Summer Infant one does have the 2 way talk, but I didn't see if it has the power save feature when there isn't noise past a threshold. Does your current one have that?

We have a Summer video monitor. (A model that's discontinued, or I'd share a link!) It pans/zooms and obvi has the sound and night vision. I like that you can add up to 4 cameras...but I wish it had the 2 way talk now that DS1 is older and can get in/out of his big boy bed.

We got the vtech safe and sound monitor. It has everything we wanted: pan/tilt/zoom, 2 way talk, sound activated screen that turns off when it's quiet (you can set different sound threshold levels), night vision and the ability to add extra cameras if you wanted one in your newborns room too. I really like the quality, especially because it's on the low end of prices (150 on Amazon) the one thing I don't like is the cord to plug it in has to be inserted in a certain direction and it's annoying in the MOTN.

My son will be moving to a big boy room shortly in preparation for the arrival of his little brother/sister. We plan on using the sound-only monitor that we already have for the new baby, but I'd like to have a monitor for him as well. I'm inclined to a video monitor since he'll be in a bed and have full freedom to move around in his room. Also I want to be able to hear if he's crying out, of course.

Anybody have any specific model suggestions or other tips? I'd like something that spans the whole room which seems different than when you have a baby in a crib and just need to focus one spot. We'd probably just get a wifi camera except I want the sound alert too. Or maybe you have a better suggestion?

ETA - DS will be almost 2.5 when moving to his toddler room.

We've been looking at the Optix one too. We like the idea of having 4 cameras. One in each kids room and one in the playroom. Not sure where we'd put the 4th one. But I think as the kids grow it will be nice to be downstairs cooking, etc. and be able to see them in any room they are in upstairs.
We have the AngelCare with the mat that detects their breathing. I think I will use it for the newborn and use the Optix in my toddlers room and playroom for now. Then change out the newborn's camera system when he is older. I like the peace of mind of having the mat. And since we already have it why not still use it.

We have a Motorola (similar to this one: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00PRECX8G?psc=1 ). We've had it for over two years now and like it. The battery life doesn't last very long, but we mostly keep it plugged in anyway. I like that you can add/remove cameras to it, so now we have two cameras: one for each kid. And I find the temperature sensor VERY helpful. Both boys are upstairs and the temp in their room is usually a good 5 degrees warmer than downstairs, so it's helpful to know how hot it is in their rooms so I know to crank the A/C (or how cold and crank the heat).

@raspberries: I suspect it's a combination of the type and location of the monitor and the type and location of the wifi router. I've heard some other people mention that their monitors do the same and they have different monitors.

@LBee: Good to know about that the temp thing is useful - our LO will have a window air conditioner in his room, but not a thermostat to control it, so it sounds like that would be a pretty nice feature to have.

@mrs.shinerbock: Ohhh good to know about the wifi - I doubt it would be a huge deal, but I hadn't considered that.

@littlebug: Thanks for the feedback - I agree, it doesn't look as high tech as others on the market, but as long as it lasts...

No specific recommendations on those two, but we were really glad to have the room temperature sensor. We knew our upstairs ran hot, but not the level that the temperature indicated it did (August baby). I was probably just a crazy FTM, but anything above 74 degrees made me super nervous (SIDS risk) and I would go in there and turn up his fan and crank up the AC. I liked being able to know that - especially since I seemed to not be able to tell as well when our house was 78 degrees upstairs.

We have the Infant Optics DX5. We've been very happy with it and really like the VOX mode where it turns off if there is no sound or movement. We also like that we can add additional cameras. The only thing we don't like about it is that it interferes with our wifi, so we can't stream video if the monitor is nearby, but that hasn't been a huge deal since we don't do it often.

Anyone have a video monitor they love and want to recommend? My dad said he'd be happy to buy us whatever monitor we want as a gift, but there are so many choices!

I've narrowed it down to the Summer Infant Full View (http://www.target.com/p/summer-infant-full-view-5-inch-pan-scan-zoom-video-monitor/-/A-16360956) and the Infant Optics DXR8 (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00ECHYTBI) - they seem pretty comparable, but the Infant Optics one has a room temperature sensor. Is that even useful?! Help!!

I don't have any LOs so I don't know if it's good for babies, but I have a VueZone surveillance system. It's cordless and I can view the cameras from my phone or my computer. I currently use it to check up on my dogs. It was $140 at Costco for two cameras. Oh, there is a $50 a year annual fee for the online access to it, but the Costco deal gives you a free year of it. You can get more cameras, too. The only problem is it uses batteries, so do don't want to stream it for long periods. You can definitely still check up on things. There is a motion detector, too. Haven't needed that feature.

It is just a video monitor. No sound.

I'll probably try it out first whenever we do get pregnant and have a LO to see if it is practical. When I get pregnant, I do want a baby monitor with motion detector so maybe I'll just go with a convenience factor and get a baby monitor that does it all.

@mrsrain: I thiiiink this is the one Bao has. or something very similar. can't beat the price! smaller screen, but IMO that is worth the pan/zoom feature.

@Raindrop: We'd like to stay below $200

@sorrycharlie: Right now I am leaning towards the motorola mbp33, which is $179 everywhere. I do have a BRU 20% coupon, and it doesn't seem to exclude motorola!

@char54: Which one do you have?

@mrsrain: also, my original plan was to grab it at buy buy baby with a coupon (BRU excluded motorola from their coupons at that point, in 2012). not sure if they still do. I ended up creating an amazon registry (just for myself to see) and bought it with my registry completion discount, and the price was discounted already, and it was a great deal.
