I've been freelancing for awhile and make a decent income doing it. The best advice I can give you is to focus on a specific niche -- it's very hard to be a freelance generalist. One obvious direction would be parenting writing; I actually turned experience writing here into a niche reviewing baby/kid products, which broadened into consumer products in general, then personal finance.

Feel free to wall me if you want; I can rattle off some places to look for gigs and maybe get you into a couple of FB groups that might be helpful.

I dabbled for a short while. I had to stop because I didn't "need" the income and was attempting to do it with no childcare and while I was (am) battling some major health issues. Elna Cain has a few free email courses. As does Jorden Roper of Writers Revolt. I got a few good ghostwriting jobs on problogger but ghostwriting isn't great for advancement. I guess none of this is real advice, just resources.

@Cherrybee: yep! Last week I was a bit of a blithering mess but I've now got my childcare sorted so I'm feeling calmer! I wasn't actually sure I wanted to go back but the job pays well and it's part time and not an opportunity I'm likely to be offered again. The plan is to go to work then start trying for another baby in the new year...

@JoyfulKiwi: @looch: @MamaCate: @catlady: thanks for all the good advice! Fortunately I'm only working three days a week (twenty hours plus commute) so hopefully it'll be a nice balance and not too stressful for us all.

You've gotten some good advice about prepping, etc. Logistically, yes, definitely try to make it as easy on yourself as possible. One other thing to consider is the emotional aspect. When I got back to work, I was overwhelmed with guilt for awhile. I felt guilty for leaving LO, guilty for actually enjoying my job instead of wanting to be with LO, guilty that my DH had taken on so many responsibilities, guilty that I wasn't immediately as good at my job as I was pre-LO (i.e. when I was actually getting sleep), and on and on. Mine eventually went away after a month or so and ever since, I've been really happy about being a working parent and I see it only as a positive thing. But take care of yourself if you have negative feelings at first and try to not get too caught up in them. For me that part was almost harder than the logistical stuff (since I had planned for that aspect).

Best of luck!

You can do it! I think the night before prep has been key for me and meal planning helps a ton too.

I think it takes a while to find your new normal so whatever you can do to ease that transition is helpful. So planning for a night when you pick up dinner out, or pizza Fridays to celebrate surviving the week, etc., are worth it!

Just be gentle with yourself and your family during this transition--good luck!!

Give yourself a good, long time to make the call that things are good. I took two years off and it took a good three months before we got our routine down. I had not expected it to take so long and require so much tweaking, truth be told.

I also pick out my clothes for the next week on Sunday, down to the tights, shoes, tank top, etc. I just don't have the time or mental space to deal with those things during the mornings.

I invested in a great haircut...sounds silly, but it's such a time saver and I know my hair at least looks good. I get regular trims.

Best of luck!!!

With 2 kids, I've found being all prepped the night before is my saving grace. Kids bags are packed, my lunch is made & in the fridge, coffee is pre-made & just waiting for creamer, clothes are laid out, etc.
I started using a white board each evening with a space for each family member and "home" category. I write down everything that needs to be done before leaving the next morning and any special events (like "diaper laundry" or "work late"). It helps me keep from forgetting anything.
I also make breakfast muffins on Sundays which makes mornings quicker. Basically, I'll do anything I can beforehand in order to sleep 5 more minutes!

Good luck and congratulations on your new adventure!

I WAH FT (not self-employed though) and our current situation right now with one LO is that my mom or MIL (we also had a PT nanny at one time) comes over and watch her while I work. It works out really well for us, but I know not everyone has the luxury to retired parents to help!

We have #2 coming in a few weeks and I'm not 100% sure what care will look like when I'm back from maternity leave, but I think we'll likely rely heavily on family helping, but we're also thinking about a PT daycare for our oldest and/or a nanny to come a few times a week, too.

@Glitter: a lot of people around us will us teenagers as mother's helper. They can go to your house after school and you will be home for emergencies. Just someone to help keep the LOs occupied.

@Mrs. Sketchbook: how old is your younger LO? In some ways mine was an easier baby but when he became more aware it was all mama all the time. Plus he gets into way more trouble so if he's not whining to be picked up he is probably climbing on the table with a knife or something!

I'm at home with my three right now and we're interviewing a part time nanny to give me a hand a couple times per week. I seriously never thought I'd be a SAHM with a nanny.
We're doing it mostly for household help so I can focus on the kids while she helps with chores and food prep.
I'll be doing some part time work starting in a month and cannot imagine doing it at home without some childcare.

@skipra: this is funny, in my friend group we all seem to marvel at the opposite-- our seconds are so much more self sufficient! However my first is still shaken by being a new brother and is also three so he sucks up the emotional energy in the house right now. Poor second!

To the OP, do you have a partner? If so, that helps. My husband took on more chores after my second was born and he lets me leave at night to work or hole up in our room to do work while he does bedtime with both kids.

@Glitter: I think you are lucky how your LO is rather independent. I know it is not the case for everyone but my friends and I have noticed a common thing for us is that our second born kids are much clingier and needier than our first. I SAH with mine and couldn't imagine really having to get work done during the day. I guess it's possible during naps but it takes a while to consistently get them on the same schedule. Maybe something like a mother's helper could come to you after school so that combined with any double nap you could work?

I am self-employed and WAH. There is no way that I can work with my two kids at home. My job requires a high level of concentration, I usually can't even listen to music while I work, so they go to full time daycare. I also have to meet very strict deadlines, which is impossible without childcare.

@Glitter: I definitely choose the easiest classes...register for more than I need and then compare syllabi to make sure I'm not overloaded at any point. When my older was at school I'd devote 2 hours a day 3x a week to school or work (I teach English at a community college), then Sunday night to work or school, and some evenings as necessary. Now I'm not working and have both kids at home. I go out Thursday night to Starbucks and do classwork, and do work Sunday nights. That usually gives me time to do the readings (Thursday) and do the assignments (Sunday). Later in the semester when I have projects I'll have to devote more time. Right now my kids' nap schedules are opposite so daytime work almost never happens, plus I can't focus anyway. My work ethic has definitely slipped in comparison to how I was in my first year, when I was pregnant with my now 10 month old. I obsessed a lot more when I had more time. These days, I tend to give school a certain amount of time and am happy with my efforts, even if my grade isn't as high as it could be. This is also my second master's so I feel a little more comfortable prioritizing and not making every assignment equally important in my mind.

My mom watches our kids and ds1 goes to school part time three half days a week. Even then I find myself torn in two between working and moming. I often work at nights and wknds as it's hard to fully work during the day.
